Red Dead Redemption

I am jumping in to give my opinion of one of the best games Rockstar has put out yet, Red Dead Redemption. While all the GTA's were good games, the story here actually feels like this is something that could have happened back in the "old west". The gameplay is so smooth, especially with some of the most impressive horse animations i have seen in any game or genre. Where GTA 4's aiming system felt sparadic at times, for whatever reason the autolock aiming felt near perfect in Red Dead. I don't know what the difference is, if there is one. The story completely envelopes you, and even though there are hundreds of side quests and stranger missions to complete, you never feel detached from the story. Also, the 100% achievment is far easier to obtain than in the GTA series to me, while still requiring hours of devotion and patience. All stranger missions are entertaining, while some venture into strange waters, and feel like you are actually achomplishing something. There is really only one thing i would have done different...
and most have to do with story. Each main mission is mapped out from start to finish, so the game basically ends out of your control. This to me doesn't fit, because the entire game is based on the principle of you control the entire game. You don't want to do this mission now? Rather go collect some bounties, and up your gun collection? Fine, go right ahead. But in the end, the game ends with Marstons death, and there is nothing you can do to change it. Make it a Platinum Achievment or something to actually be able to Dead Eye all the soldiers at the end, and kill them all. Give me the option of being the bad guy, and instead of helping the Feds, join back up with Dutch. Yes, i know story wise, Marston is supposed to be putting that behind him and is the good guy now. But if i want, i can go to any town, and simply massacre everyone in it. I can let every kidnapped wife hang till dead. I basically have the option to live as greedily as possible, caring only for myself, until the end where i am forced to sacrifice myself for the family. Which in one playthrough is fine, when you are the hero, but when you playthrough demented and evil, you dont want to go out a hero. You want to slink away in the shadows and escape to kill everyone who did you wrong.
A great game, near perfect, and i will play through many many many more times before i shelf it for a couple months or so, and i absolutly recommend that anyone who loves open world adventures play this one. You wont put it down until your thumbs go numb.

i agree. it would have been nice to have your actions be able to dictate the story.

So, I did it. 100% completion. It was that damn Aztec Gold mission, tucked away in the nothingness of Sidewinder Gultch. :cmad:

In the end, this may be my personally favorite game of all time. A beautiful game that has really set the bar high for everything else, and has even ignited my love for the Westerns of yesteryear. I can't see Rock* making a game any better...but if they do, then I will be the first in line to buy it.

Nope, sadly not. Even though realistically that would be rather cumbersome, reloading both at the same time.

New expansions for Redemption revealed. Multiplayer Liars Dice, Poker.....oh and zombies.

There are four new expansions coming from Rockstar Games for the hit Western Red Dead Redemption. One of them will bring zombies.

Plus... new animals? Red Dead Revolver characters? Anti-griefing somethings-or-other?

Rockstar outlined the four new paid expansions to Red Dead Redemption today, promising the next one for August and the following downloadable packs in the coming months. The DLC, which will be offered for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, expands the single player and multiplayer aspects of the game.

(The following summaries are quoted from a press release)

1) Legends and Killers Pack (Early August 2010, $10)

-New active map locations, characters and more
- 9 new multiplayer map locations — more than doubling the amount of territories in the multiplayer competitive modes;
- 8 new multiplayer characters — play as characters from Red Dead Revolver
- Introducing a new projectile weapon: the Tomahawk, with corresponding challenges for single-player and multiplayer gameplay
- New achievements and trophies;

2) Liars and Cheats Pack (TBD release date; $10)

- New competitive modes, multiplayer mini-games in Free Roam, and more
- Attack and Defend multiplayer competitive mode and challenges;
- New multiplayer horse races, complete with mounted combat;
- Play as the heroes and villains of Red Dead Redemption, as well as 8 additional multiplayer characters;
- Multiplayer versions of Liars Dice and Poker from the single-player game
- Introducing a new weapon: the Explosive Rifle, with associated challenges available in single-player and multiplayer gameplay;
- New achievements and trophies;

3) Free Roam Pack (TBD release date; $10)

-Delve deeper into the world of Red Dead Redemption with
new modes, challenges and gang hideouts to discover
-New action areas and defensive placements
-Posse scoring and leaderboards;
-New anti-griefing measures in Free Roam (Note from Stephen: Any theories on this, readers?)

4) Undead Nightmare Pack (TBD release date; $10)

- Ghost towns and cemeteries come alive in a West gone horribly wrong:
- Brand new single-player adventure, challenges and quests;
- 8 new multiplayer zombie characters;
- Additional animals unleashed in the world;
- New dynamic events and more

Rockstar has not released any screenshots of the new modes, so you'll have to guess what their Red Dead zombies look like. Interesting DLC strategy for this game. Rockstar's last big games, Grand Theft Auto IV, received two massive single-player-centric add-ons released more than a year after the game and offering over a dozen hours of gameplay and story for $20. With Red Dead, Rockstar is creating smaller portions of content and releasing them much closer to release, emphasizing an expansion of multiplayer more than single-player. Both plans were ambitious, showing that Rockstar is serious about post-release support. (But not so serious, folks — zombies!)

Zombie mode awesome...probably ties into Tumbleweed.....something bad happened there

I've never had a clue how to play Poker... until i played this game. I've sorta got the grasp of Texas Hold Em now.

The DLC expansions sound good. They also seemed timed pretty well to keep you playing later in the year rather than front loading it all and leaving nothing new for later. As far as the zombie stuff, I'm not always a fan of simply sticking zombies in just because, but I think it'll work great with this game. I was saying earlier on when I just got the game that I was in a house and thought how awesome it'd be if zombies were pouring in the house. The atmosphere, the old world decayed looking houses in some areas, even the music, RDR just has a good flow to have zombies running around. I hope they give a co-op mode for it and stick you in the above mentioned Tumbleweed, and that you can hold up in some of the houses with others online.

Wait...zombies? I was wondering the other day, 'How do you make this game better?'

They just answered that question.:o

Haha. I remember seeing it before Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest came out and then it was featured in that movie, but it wasnt until Redemption came out that i actually learned how to play it.

I wonder if the new single player DLC will be epilogue missions for [blackout]Jack or if they will be generic ones that he or John can do[/blackout]

I hope they continue where the game left off.

I wouldn't mind some prequel stuff tho.

Picked up this game last week and I've been slowly picking at it. Just beat the mission in Mexico where you're told that there's a traitor and you're given the sniper rifle. I've been doing a lot of side missions to keep busy, but I'm constantly blown away by just how in depth this game is. Definitely one of the best of 2010.
