Refn Teaming with Gosling for Drive

So the BluRay is going to be a classic case of double dipping with a bare bones release in January and then according to Refn, likely a more in depth release next fall. The January release has a crap cover.

From Destroy the Brain http://networkedblogs.com/rgBjo

For those excited about an in-depth look at one of the most talked about films of 2011, Drive, unfortunately you are going to have to settle for a more bare-bones release for now. It was previously announced that the DVD and Blu-ray of the film will be available to own on January 31, 2012. Now, that release does have a handful of featurettes (“I Drive”, “Under The Hood”, “Driver and Irene”, “Cut To The Chase”) and an interview with the director Nicolas Winding Refn in addition to the film. However, Refn reveals in a new interview with Hollywood News that a second “more definite release” of the film is planned for next fall. I hope you fans like to double-dip, cause your wallet is going to get a work-out if you want to own the ultimate Blu-ray of Drive. Continue reading the below excerpt from the interview to read what I’m talking about.

HollywoodNews.com: Can we expect a commentary track on the Blu-ray or DVD?
Yes, and in fact, the edition that will be in stores in January doesn’t hold the secrets, nor the answers, so hopefully there will be a more definite release in the near future. That’s not to say that the one that is being released is bad, because it has the movie on it, which is the most important thing. But for people like myself, who have a huge interest in Blu-rays … I mean, I’m a Blu-ray fanatic. I think it is the world’s greatest invention since the wheel. The version that will answer more questions is in the process of being made.
HollywoodNews.com: When do you think we might see that version?
Hopefully in the fall.
HollywoodNews.com: Can you give me any specifics as to what some of those answers might be on this beefed-up Blu-ray release?
Now that is for me to know and you to find out. [Laughs] I will tell you later.

Why do studios have to do this? Oh . . . that’s right . . . GREED. Take this info and do with it what you like. I’m personally on the fence now knowing that a better version is around the corner. What are your thoughts?
Below is the cover for the January Blu-ray of the film. For those thinking that there might be something off about that cover, you are correct. No where in the film is the jacket shown to EVER have a smaller scorpion stitched on the front of the jacket in the top corner. It is only on the back. Yet, another reason to avoid this version.

Seriously whats with the scorpian being on the front? They should have used a picture of his back or something. I also hate the fact that this doesn't use the Pink Cursive logo... Classic case of pretty much all the fan art being better than the official crap.

Wow. That wins the "All-Time Crappiest DVD Cover for an Awesome Movie" award

I hope that whoever made that cover gives really, really great head because otherwise there is no excuse for it getting through. The marketing materials for this film were actually pretty decent.. so how is the cover oh so bad?

Would love to see Driven as a sequel film IF all the original players came back.. Yes, I know that will never happen.

There's so many things wrong with that cover. Are we sure that's official? :o

Yep, I'm going to skip this upcoming version of the film and wait for the deluxe edition (or Queen edition as Refn called it) instead.

And damn, that early cover art is pretty nasty. :down

Yep, its on every site selling the release as well. Best to hold out until the fall.

What original players? Most of them are dead save for 2 characters

This may be a shock to you but there are more people than just the 8 cast members that chipped in to make the movie =P Given how much the style was integral to the film I'd want the same director, editor, composer, etc etc..

I'd love to see a Criterion release for this film. More-so for the ballin ass cover art that they're sure to come up with than the extras.

Are they being serious with this cover? Hopefully it gets enough backlash from fans making them to eventually change the cover like they did for The Fountain.

Looks like I'll be waiting until fall rolls around to get my copy. I wish studios would release the cover arts for movies in advance then based on opinions on it change it if it's needed.

That's why I end up making my own blu-rays covers half of the time...

Mine for this will just be the pink lettering on black. That's all one needs.

You gotta put the scorpion on the back. :awesome:

When this movie doesn't get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, we'll be further convinced how much of a joke the Academy is. This was the best movie of 2011.

just seen the movie it was'nt bad i felt the cinematography, atmosphere, soundtrack were phenomenal and made up for a thin plot and characters(besides the driver)

7/10 from me

i do liked the driver character and the symbolism of wearing the scorpion on his jacket
the scorpion has represented the death that comes unsuspecting. It does not attack with ferociousness like a tiger or bear, but instead dances around its enemy, drawing their attention to its pincers while it slowly draws near enough for the fatal strike from its tail. This teaches us the value of the never letting your enemy know the true danger until it is too late.

there is no cruelty in the scorpion. It is simple, emotionless, and deadly at the same time. Cold-blooded simplicity at its finest. The scorpion will fight, kill, and then devour any rival scorpions and even their mates. They teach us that we are alone in the world, and that it is often best to rid the world of competitors. Unlike people though, this is not done through hate or distrust, simply the cold knowing that all competitors can turn around and destroy you if you do not destroy them first.
Sums up the driver quite well

i think the director should be nominated for best director it was shot and crafted so artistically beautiful

gosling should be nominated but his performance was extremely subtle so he will be ignored
