Rege-Jean Page is poised to star in a new adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic. I’ve always liked Page (he’s still on my list of Bond hopefuls even if James Bond is cooked now); he was really good in Black Bag and D&D, though the later almost feels like a missed opportunity because apparently they initially cast him as Drizzt and that would have been AWESOME. Anyway though, The Count of Monte Cristo is a great story and I’m all for a new adaptation. I liked the one from the early 2000s a lot, but I can’t stomach watching it anymore because Jim Caviezel is such a despicable POS in real life. At least Guy Pearce is still a good dude. Anyway, looking forward to this.

Is there really a need for another Count of Monte Cristo though? Even outside the solid 2002 film There have been tons of direct adaptations over the years, both in cinema and on TV let alone countless "inspired by" works of fiction. Just last year we had both a TV show and a French movie based on the book, the latter of which is considered possibly the best adaptation of them all. I don't know what new there is to bring on the table.

Another adaptation already? Was only last year we had both a tv-series and a French movie

That’s the beauty (and the curse) of public domain. We get a million versions of the same thing all promising “a bold new take” with zero quality control.

Yeah I haven’t seen the one from last year. I also need to see those French Three Musketeers films that are supposed to be excellent. Still, I’ll give anything with Page a shot.

I haven't gotten around to see it either, but they say great stuff about it. The Three Musketeers films are really good. Too bad the second one ends on a cliffhanger and we're most likely never getting a third film since they bombed.

Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest novels of all time and it is a sweeping epic. I still have yet to see it truly done justice.

The Jim Caviezel one was a fun movie, but it really diverted from the novel pretty extensively.
