I was just flipping through the political radio stations on my satellite radio on my drive home and came across the cartoonist/racist saga and then it segwayed into talk about a reparations bill being recently passed. They said it was just passed last week while the attention was all one the stimulus package and that negotiations are happening to nail down the exact payment:huh: I can't remember the congressman they said passed it and I can't find anything about it on the net.

Is there any truth to this? Is this crazy right wing mouthing off or did this bill actually pass under our noses?

Slavery apparently. I will keep digging.

I figured....but I had to ask...
This better not happen...or it will open one HELL of a can of worms for past "wrongs" across the board.

No. Much like the bill doesn't contain any funding directly to ACORN or has a $30 million provision protecting a marsh mouse in San Francisco, reparations are not in the bill. It is more propaganda from a political faction which has nothing better to do than spew lies to advance its cause.

I've never had a slave.

Oh and I'm half Irish and half Cherokee.

When do I get my check?

:thing: :doom: :thing:

This was done separately than the stimulus package...it wasn't even attached to it so they say.

I have relatives 27 branches over that were American-Indian.....I would imagine...
Check please!

I agree--it would definitely be a can of worms. As a descendant of Colonial Americans, I want reparations from England. As those Colonial Americans came from Scotland, I want reparations from England for that oppression, too. And, I also want reparations from Italy (the Roman Empire) for that.

Of course, as a man with a sense of self respect and dignity, I wouldn't accept reparations from them even if offered.

Chaseter, it really surprises me that you would even consider investigating this. If such a bill had passed, there would be no way it would remain secret. This would have been all over the news-- and if not, someone with a shred of credibility would have found out about it. Congressional votes are not secret. Nor would a bill like this actually pass.

A bill proposing a commission to study reparations =/= a bill granting reparations.

Do you actually think we are 100% aware of everything congress passes:huh: People that write these things are the real idiots:o

A bill proposing a commission to study reparations =/= a bill granting reparations.

To acknowledge the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery, subsequently de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies, and for other purposes.

How do you explain this?

Under, SEC. 3. ESTABLISHMENT AND DUTIES.

(C) Whether, in consideration of the Commission's findings, any form of compensation to the descendants of African slaves is warranted.

(D) If the Commission finds that such compensation is warranted, what should be the amount of compensation, what form of compensation should be awarded, and who should be eligible for such compensation
.

Why would you even spend money to investigate this:dry:

Take a moment to think about this: Do you really think a bill which would grant reparations to African Americans-- a subject which has been controversial ever since it was first conceived-- would not only pass through Congress, but receive little media attention?

The Christian right has been crusading against the Freedom of Choice Act, something I have seen news coverage of online, in print, and on television. Well, there is no Freedom of Choice Act in the current Congress-- yet it is receiving considerable media focus.

Do you really think a reparations bill would NOT receive media attention?

I agree with you Senator...but .... you know...its hard to ignore it off the website

:)

Congress is spending money investigating whether or not African Americans actually deserve reparations. Actually, let me rephrase that: Congress MAY spend money to investigate this, considering this is only a PROPOSAL which appears to have been referred to a subcommittee which will undoubtedly table this.

We are so caught up now in the economy this doesn't surprise me. I doubt if it will ever happen but who allows such idiotic ventures to be sought after and not only that...create a committee that investigates the matter on taxpayer time and money??? The people that write this crap should be removed from office.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

January 6, 2009

if we have not heard anything about it since it was introduced...I think its pretty much dead.

You really need to chill and read the Bill's status. It was referred to a subcommittee-- that's all that happened. It didn't "pass."

Also, chaseter, I know you'll be shocked to hear this-- but not everyone agrees with you. There is a considerable amount of people who believe that African Americans deserve reparations.

When is the point in the history of this country when we will stop this kind of frivolity? They are wasting taxpayer time and money by sitting down and writing this crap and giving it genuine thought and concern.

I think we need a dumb bills thread where we can post bills trying to be passed or shelved.

You would have a point if any major action occurred with this bill. Do you know how many bills get referred to subcommittees in each Congress? A lot. And most of them die there.

I would actually be willing to give money to those that were in slavery....
But um....they are all dead...I would not be willing to give money to those that were NOT in slavery...kids...grandkids...etc...

I know Jman. Their arguments over a nearly 2 century old occurrence that has nothing to do with me but I would somehow have to pay hold tons of water:dry:

Any who...
