This thread is about retconning what happening in X3 with explanations in an X4 is there is one ;)

I think they should take the comics approach and say the real Jean was stuck at the bottom of Alkali lake and the Jean that originally came out was an imposter made either by Jean (her alter ego created telepathically) or another force. This could have Jean re emerge (with real fire phoenix effects). They could bring in the Hellfire Club to confuse her and have her go maniac for a little while but then just be normal Jean again. This would sataisfy more fans I feel.

They could bring Cyclops back by saying he was never killed (we never saw him killed)

The fact that the cure probably doesn't work could work on Rogue's favour, having her powers return (and maybe some extra ones). Maybe she'll have the choice again to elimate them or not except this time she chooses to stay a mutant, having her re-evaluate her choice would make me appreciate her more. I'd also like to see Rogue's sassy character kind of begin.

What are everyone else's thoughts? ;)

to me:

Jean is dead, but the outcomes of Alcatraz, Dark Cerebro and Liberty Island lead to the release of Wideawake Project.

Cyclops is found by Sinister, returns to the mansion and becomes the leader of the team for real.

The cure is still working, but not in Rogue, due to the nature of her powers.

Storm is leader in the beginning and helps explaining and getting in depth about what happened to Jean, through talks to Beast. The entrance of Gambit reveals a new side of her: a former thief. they become friends and he helps her developing her arc.

Gambit works for Sinister.

Beast is still in the UN.

I like your idea. Scott lives, Jean stays dead.

Also, Xavier is not actually dead, but trapped in a parallel universe. Xavier lets this be known by speaking through the man in the coma. The X-Men re-recruit Nightcrawler or another mutant who can teleport between dimensions to rescue the Professor.

And if they do decide to bring Jean back...I'd say save it for a suprise ending in 5. You don't want to bring back all the supposed dead characters at once; give the fans some time to mourn a little.

The problem is retconning without paying off the original story. While X3 needs to be retconned out of existance, it still needs to have consequences.

If Scott is alive, then he can't just come back and re-join the X-Men like nothing happened. Say his body is found by Sinister, who takes him and does experiments on him. By the end of X4, he's rescued by the X-Men. But he's totally messed-up. Something like that would change a person.

In X5, Scott's still messed up, until he meets Madelyne Pryor, who looks just like Jean and can be played by Famke. Maddie turns Scott around. Scott is convinced that Maddie is really Jean, but she's not.

The cure also has to have ramifications. For example, it causes a secondary mutation. Rogue can't just get her powers back after the cure wears off, it needs to have consequences that lead to the retcon rather than just a retcon that just immediately magically change everything. It would be better to do a complete reboot than just retconning specific parts of X3 out of existance without paying them off.

Here's my take (and i'm currently working on a screenplay with it):

The cure is temporary. Why? No real explanation is given. Only a vague reference on how you can't simply contain nature. Because the cure is temporary, Magneto gets his powers back and displays them in a quite violent way in the beginning.

I'm going the presumed-dead route that "Alias" took with Michael Vaughn in their last season. Cyclops will be alive, but recuperating from the injuries he sustained after his encounter with Jean/Phoenix. I'm thinking that the Professor could have a hand in Cyclops still being alive. I'm not sure how I'm going to wing it at the moment.

Project Wide Awake is started up by the President, under the supervision of the reluctant Bolivar Trask. There'll be a newer and younger president who's very paranoid. He has a dislike for mutants but doesn't publicly display this attitude as it would be damaging to his political career. The Sentinels round up the mutants who were given the cure against their will (those hundred or so mutants at Alcatraz who got shot with the cure) as the president feels they are a danger to society. He gets carried away and expands that order so that many other innocent mutants are rounded up and some are killed. This catches the attention of both Magneto and the X-Men. I'm not going to say what happens and how it happens until I'm done writing it, except this'll be the real battle we should've seen in X-Men 3.

For those who want to read my script as it develops.

my thoughts:

The cure does not work and actually has different results depending on what level the mutant was. Such as no mystique because shes less powerful then magneto.

The Cure's possible outcomes lead to researching what scientists help actually produce the cure...Dr. Rao and Dr. Essex.

Sinister Finds cyclops barely alive at the lake.

Gambit works for sinister due to a flashback at the start of the movie where a young gambit is trying to steal from a group of men at a bar and ends up blowing most of it up...sinister would tell the young man he can control his power.

Xavier is alive and on muir island, storm and wolvie will be contacted by Moira to go retrieve him, leaving the young team to handle whatever. Perhaps Emma Frost could headmistress the school while they're away.

Rogue gets her powers back and is starting to exhibit other powers due to an adverse reaction to the cure.

thats just some ideas id have in X-4.

Like the idea of Scott being barely alive, rogue manifesting a second mutation is interesting.....
