Richard Donner is loved but underrated as well.

well, he is an average director with barely three good movies (The Goonies Lethal Weapon 1 and 2) and none of them are what you would call "awesome". But, this is just my opinion.

Donner has made a classic and influential horror movie, a classic and influential action movie, and a classic and influential superhero movie. Name another director who can state all that.

 you are joking, right?
Shindler's List deserved an Oscar, not The Goonies, Forrest Gump deserved a oscar, not The Omen, The Lord of the Rings deserved an Oscar, not Superman, The Godfather deserved an Oscar, not Lethal Weapon.

Donner is just an average director.

What do you smoke regularly and maybe you should cut down on it?

Peter Jackson is a regular director. Nobody more than someone who got lucky and a lot of cash to make his LOTR movies. Any director could have done the same thing had they the resources. In fact, Donner would have made it a better trilogy no doubt.

yes, and that makes him one of the best average directors.
He's not average. He's one of the best.

Leathal Weapon is one of the best cop action movies ever made.

Superman is arguable the best superhero movie ever made.

The Omen is a classic.

Goonies and Ladyhawke are cult classic.

Out of hundreds of directors how many have more classic or widely beloved films under their belt?

I doubt you can find 15 living ones.

LOL, an average director is someone who makes average films. Joe Johnson, Brett Ratner.

If you make three classics, you are clearly better than average, savvy? And Donner has done so, therefore is better than average.

Surely you jest.....surely!

I thought his movie about "time travel” time shift or something (I forgot the title) was so great!
This was under rated!

As for his render of the planet krypton in those superman movies
Are just bunches of architectural nonsense!

And the biggest mistake in superman returned was to show those slightly improved but the same architectures crap again.
Perhaps it was cool in the 70's but now I don't think so .

He is an underrated director. Doesn't get any praise for the great movies he has done in the last few decades.

Scrooged, which many people hate, is underrated aswell. It's a wonderful film!

How can you forget Superman:dry:

Completely agree. The original Superman stomps mudholes in PJ's trilogy.

Nah, I know I am in the minority, but the LOTR movies not only fail to impress me, they bore me. I don't see imagination, I see CGI. The acting is mostly pretty abyssmal and forced, and about the only redeeming thing is the score. Well, that and Ian McKellan. Just my humble opinion.

He may not be Spielberg, but I'm sure tons of other directors would kill to have had Donner's hits on their resume.

I'll agree once you add Christopher Lee to that list:oldrazz:

Yeah, see, I don't care for those movies so much I forget who is in it. If I remember correctly, didn't he get his role cut down considerably for ROTK?

He was cut out of the theatrical version of ROTK entirely, then had his scenes restored to the extended version. I would have gladly accepted shorter battles in exchange for having Lee's scenes in the theatrical cut.

But that's not what we're here for, we're here for the Donner love.

Donner's done some of the greats, he has alot of clasics under his belt...

Superman 1 and now 2, Goonies, and Lethal Weapon. Oh, and, the Omen, I always forget he directed that.
