Saw it, this is one of Ridley's worst movies...Terrible.

I also saw Bad Grandpa...That movie was really funny...Knoxville knows how to be a jackass

I think Alien and Gladiator are great. I personally can't really get into Blade Runner, but I respect it, if that makes sense.

I don't think Kingdom of Heaven is very good at all.

I like Black Rain, that's really good movie.

Yeah, this is the most overrated director of all-time, without question. Anyone who says a thing about Nolan has no idea what they're talking about, lol. I've never seen a continuous string of movies this bad: A Good Year, American Gangster, Body of Lies, Robin Hood, Prometheus, The Counselor. Not to mention Hannibal and G.I. Jane? Good god.

I don't know what I'll make of The Counselor, based on the trailers and the buzz. The feeling I'm getting is that it's a very different film to what the trailers are suggesting, and it's the kind of film a lot of people expecting something else are going to hate, but which I may end up really liking.

That's saying a LOT hahaha. Literally 3 out of 25 of his movies are good.

Thank you! I was wondering if anybody else felt that way. I loved Alien and really like Blade Runner... I think that's it?

What? There are actually people who agree with me that Scott is a ridiculously overrated director and even someone who doesn't care for BladeRunner? I thought that I was alone. Granted I don't need people to agree with me but it's nice when they do.

I enjoy Hannibal and Prometheus, though they're nowhere near as good as The Silence of the Lambs or Alien.

American Gangster is pretty well regarded.

I didn't think Body of Lies was bad.

Your point certainly stands though.

I think Scott's a very good if inconsistent director. Blade Runner and Alien are his masterpieces, definitely. I doubt that he has a movie like either of those left in him, but that's okay. Those films are so good it almost doesn't matter and he's managed to put out some quality ones in recent years, most notably Gladiator.

Edgar Wright saw it and...
@edgarwright: 'The Counselor' is Ridley Scott's 'Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia'. If you submit to its death trip, you might have a good time. I did.

@edgarwright: @SunsetGunShot @NotDBordwell It's equally bleak at least and destined to turn some audiences completely off.

@edgarwright: Almost all 70's movies would have had terrible Cinemascores.
I was going to see this anyway. but seems like will have a good amount of time most likely.
and oh, from The Duellists to Kingdom of Heaven DC dat genius filmmaking that I will appreciate any freaking time.

I can definitely see why people hate this movie, but I really dug it.

This movie was terrible. Brad Pitt stole the show. He was above and beyond great in every scene he was in

The Counselor is a tale of heists gone bad,and fatal decisions. It's a film that amazes me,not because its great
but that i found portions of the film to be very good with salty dialogue and humor, and the other portions have scenes
that go nowhere, and that are so full of pretentious jabber, and campiness it becomes laughable.
One scene really stood out with such a long drawn out speech that adds up to nothing , i literally almost fell out of my seat
and rolled down the steps with laughter.A talented cast and great visuals wasted,in this over mixed bag of a movie.
Scale of 1-10 a 5

To be fair though...of any of those movies mentioned, is it the direction you find poor or the script itself?
I find Ridley's film to be hit or miss myself, but I've never really found his direction to be the problem. Movies like Robin Hood or Prometheus really suffered from a lackluster script in my view, and if anything, the direction was of the few positive points.

Robin Hood had an amazing script and one of the most sought after until Scott came and completely ruined it.

IMO, Ridley's GREAT, classic movies:

Alien
Blade Runner
Thelma & Louise
Gladiator

His GOOD movies:

The Duellists
Black Rain
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut)
Black Hawk Down
American Gangster

His DECENT movies:

Matchstick Men
White Squall
Body of Lies
Prometheus
Hannibal

His DUDS:

1492: A Conquest of Paradise
Robin Hood
G.I. Jane
A Good Year
The Counselor (going by reviews, haven't seen it yet)
Legend

I feel like people often over-state his ratio of duds vs. solid work just because his best days are obviously behind him.

^ I think too that whatever your opinion of his body of work overall, for a filmmaker to have even just Blade Runner and Alien as part of their filmography I think automatically renders any talk of being "overrated" rather ludicrous. Ridley could have gone on to make horrid pieces of **** for the rest of his career and still be honored for those two films.

Robin Hood had an amazing script and one of the most sought after until Scott came and completely ruined it.

I don't have an exact recollection of the production history of Robin Hood; I know Ridley was at least on board with the original script for a time. How can you say for certain the idea to scrap the script was solely Ridley's call? Furthermore, has this original script been made available to the public? I think we often give the benefit of the doubt to original scripts (and from overblown personal opinions before production) without allowing for the idea that the original was any good.

Let's say Ridley did ruin this supposed amazing script. My original question was not whether his personal views regarding scripts were sound, but whether or not his direction ever really hindered his films.

Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut is a masterpiece...Orlando Bloom was decent in that version...However, the film would have been better if they had a better lead. The theaterical version should have been the DC

I've never found Ridley's direction in and of itself an issue. Hannibal is very stylishly-directed, especially in the Florence scenes, and Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Prometheus are all very visually well-directed, IMO.
