Saw it a couple of days ago, very very good. I'll try to see it again soon but there's a a bunch of films out over the next few weeks that look really promising - Sicario, Macbeth, The Lobster, The Walk, Spectre, Crimson Peak.

The Revenant

Going to see this in an hr.

Is it worth going for the 3D with this one? That's like the only showings available tonight, except for a few spread out regular ones.

This had a way more upbeat tone than most of Ridley's stuff (though he did do A Good Year, which was practically a comedy), and also had none of his recent problems with narrative cohesion.

Maybe he just need good scriptwriters.

Was I the only one thinking
someone else was going to die on the mission to save him? I saw Winter Soldier kiss Invisible Woman and thought...you're dead...and then when Zero Dar Thirty went to grab him with the rope...i was thinking she was going to die...

Not gonna lie, I thought
Bucky was a goner when he was chosen to be the one to grab Watney and then got the kiss from Mara. It was actually kind of refreshing that nobody died at all though. And the little throwaway bit with Stan/Mara in the epilogue was a cute little wrap-up.

Just got out of it, and good god, was this a great movie. I loved it!

Seeing this later today in the evening. Is it worth seeing in 3D?

Yes. I hate 3D and I saw it that way. Ridley shot it in 3D naturally and his heavy emphasis on pratcial effects helped make the screen pop.

Oh didn't realize it was shot in 3D. Thanks man.

I thought it was quite good, and a very effective adaptation of the book. Obviously the book had way more incident (I was surprised they pretty much skipped over the journey to the Ares IV launch vehicle entirely), but what they chose to depict worked really well. The change to the climax to amp it up a bit more, in terms of giving the biggest actors more to do, I thought also worked, and that's often a place where movie adaptations can slip up.

The only thing that could have improved the movie: in the final montage with the Ares V, when we cut to Sean Bean on the golf course, he is struck on the back of the head by an errant golf ball, and dies.

Yeah Ridley and 3D go together like bread and butter.I'm gonna try to watch this Sunday.

I gotta say this might be the best movie of the year for me so far. I loved it. A really inventive, fascinating and feel great movie that totally worked. Best sci fi film in a long time for me and much better than Interstellar. And better than Gravity. It's between Black Hawk Down and this film to get into Scott's top five for me. If not, maybe his sixth best film.

And the only movie to ever think of a Glorfindel reference. God bless you Drew Goddard.

They referenced Glorfindel? As in Tolkien's Glorfindel?

I loved this film and every actor did a great job. I cant remember the last time there has been 3 great space films 3 years in a row.

This was SO damn good. :hrt:

This movie had some delightfully nerdy humor.

Yes! I know right?

Yup, and the funniest part is the Lord of the Rings conversation includes Sean Bean.

Scott needs to work with Goddard some more!

Saw it earlier tonight. It's one of the best movies of the year. Funny, feel-good, and intelligent. Matt Damon absolutely sold the hell out of his role and this is some of his best work in years. The movie would never have worked without him. Also incredible special effects work. If Drew Goddard doesn't get a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for this, I'll be very disappointed.

Saw it. Loved it. Not since Apollo 13 have I been so captivated by the wonders and horrors of space travel. Kudos to Ridley Scott for bouncing back and having another great film to post on his ledger. Terrific supporting cast, although Donald Glover's character annoyed me. Really no complaints at all. Realistic, suspenseful, and good comedy. Might be an all time personal favorite of mine.

We talking Oscar buzz?

Thats actually from the book. Andy Weir said in a Q&A, when Sean was cast the studio wanted that joke gone. But Ridley said "oh no no no thats stays!" :D

I would say so, but there is stacked competition this year. Revenant, Big Short, Joy, Southpaw, The Walk. Obviously Star Wars and JW will probably clean up the technical awards, but this has a shot for Cinematography and adapted screen play (haven't read the book though). Aren't the nominations going down this year for BP?
