The bad news is that Hollywood has decided to rape your childhood once again. Rob Cohen revealed to Bloody Disgusting that he will be producing a remake of classic 1987 movie Monster Squad for Paramount. If there is anyone out there remotely excited by the idea of a Monster Squad remake, let me remind you that Cohen has directed some of the worst films of recent years: xXx, Stealth, The Skulls, and from I’ve heard, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The good news is that Cohen has no plans to direct the remake. Little known fact, Rob Cohen produced The Wiz, the African American adaptation of The Wizard of Oz starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Sidenote: that was a horrible horrible film. I wouldn’t trust anything with his name attached to it now-a-days.

Co-written by Shane Black, and directed by Fred Dekker, Monster Squad followed a group of young teenagers who must stop Dracula and his classic monster minions (who were re-imagined by a team of special effects artists including Stan Winston) from taking over the world. The film has become a cult classic to the ‘80’s generation. Lionsgate released a two-disc 20th anniversary Monster Squad special edition DVD in October 2007.

Just picked the dvd up the other day actually. It's horrible they're remaking it but now I can watch the original whenever I want so I still win!

The Mummy III doesn't look bad. I'll have to hear more from Cohen. Which I'm sure we will, since the release date for Dragon Emperor is fast approaching.

Rob Cohen Talks 'Monster Squad' Remake?!

This afternoon SpookyDan conducted an exclusive one-on-one interview with Rob Cohen, director of Universal's upcoming The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, who revealed some interesting news about Fred Dekker's classic '87 movie. Cohen tells Bloodyy-Disgusting that Paramount Pictures has acquired the remake rights to Monster Squad, which followed a group of kids hunting down Dracula and his minions who are attempting to take over the world. Cohen also reveals that he is planning to produce the remake, but does not intend on directing.

Let the said complaining Start.

They better not cast the High School Musical & Hannah Montana cast in this :o

I love Monster Squad. I had a bootleg DVD for years before the 20th Anniversary one came out. Granted the effects are dated, but it's one of those movies that's so fun to watch the effects are forgivable. Damn Hollywood with all the remakes.

I watched again last night It was pretty funny.

I like towards the end of the movie when dracula's brides are coming and Rudy goes towards them and he's like 'I'm in tbe goddamn club ain't I?"

I didn't know Rob Cohen was a original Executive producer on the original.

Well the one kid who played Horance AKA Fat Kid died like 10 years ago.

Remake is a terrible idea...

sequel: a literary work, movie, etc., that is complete in itself but continues the narrative of a preceding work.

as long as they tie in the events from the original movie with the next movie then they wouldn't have to bring back the original squad in order for it to be considered a sequel. however, if it's an absolute MUST then they can always bring back a couple of characters and form a new squad. there are plenty of options for making a sequel.

this sucks. The what made the original so great is that the kids are all 10/11 years of age. They weren't teenagers, which i'm sure this remake will have. The whole idea of it being remade is stupid. WHY?!

Besides, in an issue of Rue Morgue released shortly before or after(i forget) the 20th Anniversary DVD came out, Fred Dekker and the surviving cast members all said they were down for a sequel.

I pray this stays in development hell forever. Or at least until after i die.

This is a bad idea, but thats never stopped hollywood before. I can't wait for the toned down version of MS!

Remake/sequel/relaunch/whatever, Rob Cohen is on this, and that ain't cool. MS fans, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't let this happen!

All these remakes are bad for film . It's basically saying anything in the past is not appreciated and should be considered outdated. There won't be anything considered classic .

I can picture the cast now. The kid cast will be

Shia LaBeouf

Megan Fox

Zac Efron

Miley Cyrus

Vanessa Anne Hudgens

Monster Squad is one of my favorite movies ever. I went God knows how many years between viewings, but when the dvd came out, I couldn't stop watching it. I put it down for a little while, then last week I watched it 3 times. I would go see a remake, but there's no way they could capture the greatness of the first. Movies like this just aren't made anymore. You can't have a 5 year old girl say "chicken ****" and things like that. I am curious to see how they handle it. Hopefully they won;t make them all really old, and most of all, I hope they make Rudy cool as **** again. That guy was awesome. His tough/cool guy attitude came straight from the 80s, though. I wonder if they'll try to make him some thug or something now, as opposed to his greaser-type look.
