Columbia Pictures is in discussions with producer Joe Roth for XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, which would bring back Vin Diesel as star and Rob Cohen as director, reports Variety.

The duo teamed on the 2002 original, which starred Diesel as Xander Cage, an extreme sports enthusiast who gets drafted by the government for a dangerous mission.

Roth controls the property because the original film was made by his Revolution Studios, which was also behind XXX: State of the Union, a sequel that starred Ice Cube and was directed by Lee Tamahori.

While there is no script, both Diesel and Cohen have agreed to return.

I liked the idea of this being a new lead each time it was unique. Didn't like Ice Cube in the second one though.

1st movie was s**t, 2nd was s**tier, 3rd will be even worse

I thought Xander Cage was suppose to be dead?

Yeah didn't they kill Cage in a stupid alternate version they released right before State of the Union to make way for that one?

And what happened to Diesel doing the first sequel, I remember talk of him getting a big paycheck for it, then it just fell through. I also remember reports that the movie did not do as well as promised by Cohen.

Cohen = mainstream hack.

So, Diesel and Cohen are returning for an XXX Sequel?

I can understand that - after all, the 1st movie was an absolute masterpiece.

A veritable testiment of filmaking at its peak.

(I wish we had a sarcasm smilie that I could insert here)

What's up with all the hatred toward the first XXX? I could have sworn I remember a lot of people liking it when it came out.

I always thought it was a fun movie.

Looks like Diesel finally pulled his head out of his ass and is doing the sequels he should have done 5 years ago that would have cemented his place as a star.

I'm not saying that XXX or The Fast and the Furious were brilliant films by any means, but they were fun to watch and they were the movies that made people pay attention to Diesel. Turning his back on both franchises to do another Riddick movie hurt his marketability, regardless of how much of a cult following that series has. And I applaud any actor for trying to do some more art house/indie kind of stuff... but you have to actually be a good actor to pull that off. If Diesel is, we haven't seen it yet.

The question now is, is it too little, too late?

Diesel is getting desperate and its showing. I wouldn't be suprised at all if this went straight to DVD.

Diesel returning to XXX almost smacks of as much desperation as Eddie Murphy returning to the role of Axel Foley.

Kinda worse. At least Foley was at one time popular. :cwink:

It could be worse. We could also be getting "A Man Still Apart" and "Find Me Guiltier."

I thought Xander Cage was suppose to be dead?

Yeah they mentioned in the 2nd one that he was killed in the opening shootout scene.

Movie's still gonna suck. Vin's a good actor. He needs to learn how to say no.

Hmm. Let's see. Both have had recent bombs/disappointments in theaters. Both need a hit. Of course they are returning to something that seems "safe."

I certainly will be sitting this one out, unless it looks great or I'm somehow forced to see it.

After Babylon AD it certainly looks like Vin knows where his bread is buttered. Will Asia Argento come back, too?

I thought the XXX films were fun, for what they're worth. Good popcorn flick.

IT's always the same case, people just start hating something because it's cool to hate. This is not the first movie people have this reaction where they really enjoyed it at first then they do a 180 on the internet as soon as people turn against it. Also i taught one of the Sony producers said xXx was done with and that it was a mistake. It was not long after they started production on Casino Royale. I guess Diesel figured he had more chance at a comeback if he stuck with his original franchises.

Nah, MM. It's not a case of hating for hatings sake because it's percieved to be the cool thing to do.

I didnt take to XXX then, and I havent changed my mind since.

At the time, I was genuinely excited at the prospect of XXX - it just looked so damn fresh and cool at a time that the Bond franchise was looking a bit stale.

The I saw the movie and realised that 007 had nothing to worry about.

I was talking about those that liked/loved the movie then switched their tune so obviously my post wasn't directed towards you.

Cool, MM.

You have a point though -

Sometimes you can watch a movie years later and your appriciation of ithas altered because you have changed as a person in that time but it is a bit lame for someone to change their views on a movie just because it's hip to hate it at that point and they want to be the same as the masses.

I noticed it's a common trend on these boards that's why i made a big deal of it. You don't really see that happening in everyday life though, from my experience and people i know anyway.
