Robert Pattinson IS The Batman

No, not really.

What’s exciting about Pattinson’s casting is the probability that he won’t play the character totally straight. He was Matt Reeves’ #1 choice for the start, reportedly, so hopefully he gets some input regarding characterization and how it affects the overall narrative.

I see it like that : a hero is somebody who has an exemplary behavior in spite of adversity, a dignified fate. So in that sense, Batman is one... but we know that Batman can be borderline in it's violence. He has this moral code, and struggle sometimes with it. We know that he can manipulates people, become autoritarian, a control freak, etc. He is very flawed. His goal is to be this ideal yes, but he is not a hero in the traditional sense. And that's why he is very interesting too no? He is very human. He makes (a lot of) mistakes, he makes (a lot of) questionable choices and learn.

I think one of my favorite moments that showcases how complex Batman is in terms of morality is the ending of The Killing Joke.

Batman offering the Joker help.

On the one hand it could be seen as something noble, offering an enemy help.

On the other hand he's offering help to a guy that just shot one of his best friends, traumatized her father and so on.

It's a weird area of morality you can never really pinpoint.

He seems to be trying to articulate that Batman is a flawed, multi-faceted character and not a typical one dimensional do-gooder type
I thought that was clear when Rob went on to say he couldn't ever play a "real" hero. Probably a reference to the classical archetype, and not the character whose shades of gray are in full display. Also reminded me of this Hush quote written by Loeb:

Yeah, that wasn’t the point that you responded to.

I see nothing wrong with what he said about Batman. sounds like he got a pretty good handle on who Batman is. Of course, people going to take the “hero” part and run with it negatively.

Robert was not my first choice but you know what I am on the Patterson train because heck I loved the last 2 live action big screen batmen (in fact really Wb has done quite well except for Clooney as I had no real issue with Kilmer either) so my time for mourning over Affleck is over where is the drink cart on this Patterson train?

Fanboys are not ready for Pattinson interviews.

I hope he doesn't change a bit for this movie and remains the same. Otherwise what a boring press-tour will be

What is it about Batman that excites you?

I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character. There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.

You just paused.

I just fear that when I say anything about “Batman,” people online are like, “What does this mean?” And I don’t know! I used to be very good at censoring myself, but I’ve said so many ridiculous things over the years, so I’m always curious when I’m promoting these movies how many times I can mess up. It feels like with every movie that comes out, there’s always one quote from me where it’s like, “How? What kind of out-of-body experience produced that screaming nonsense?”

So I guess Pattinson's Batman will be a little bit unhinged and that his morals is questionable but ultimately all he wants to do is help people by stopping criminals.

NAh, Patts got it.

Also, is it me or these face mashups always seem to deliver a softened face?

Old fanboy saying: You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Anything you say may be used against you.

They should choose words carefully. I don't think Pattinson said anything warranting an outrage, but unless you can elaborate on such statements (and he can't for obvious reasons), it's probably better to keep it to yourself.

As long as he doesn't reveal any spoilers about the movie then Pattinson has the right to say on how he personally sees the character, why he's intrigued by Batman and his approach to the role. Honestly it's nice that he seems genuinely excited about being Batman and that he has so much faith in the director.

Wait, there's outrage over this? How truly 2019, lol.

I mean I like my Batman heroic, but I know what he meant. He's not Superman. If he had said, "Batman totally is a murderer and we're going to make Batfleck look like Adam West with this movie"...then ok, I'd get being concerned.

Pattinson should just amend his statement to "Batman isn't a hero...he's whatever Gotham needs him to be." :oldrazz:

I'd rather judge his performance in the film than what he says in a totally unrelated interview.
