Robin Williams - I Believe He Earned His Own Thread

James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the Genie in the Broadway production of Aladdin, led a cast tribute to Robin after their show tonight.

It really hadn't occurred to me until now how much of an impact he made on my life going up. He had a ubiquity in my childhood as an icon in a similar way that something like Star Wars had. There was never a time in my life that I can remember in which I didn't know who he was or didn't have familiarity with the work he did.

Me too, Jack. I remember his characters always being really energetic and upbeat.

OK, so this is what happened at Aladdin on Broadway tonight:

Just before the big finish of "Friend Like Me", the Genie shouted "This one's for you, Robin!"

At the end, during the curtain calls, they did a dedication, and led the whole audience in a singalong of "Friend Like Me". Apparently everyone in the audience was standing and singing.

That's amazing. A perfect way to honor one of the greatest talents to ever be on screen and stage.

His autopsy photo is on the internet. I really can't with people these day. People are tweeting it to his daughter. Beyond disgusted.

Damn.

Those people should be banned from twitter.

or better yet, banned from the planet Earth.

I have to wonder if his money problems and cancelled tv show triggered a severe depression.

His movies grossed over 5 billion dollars. He should've been on a private island somewhere playing on the beach with his family and friends.

Messiah, he said it himself:

Though Williams had one of Hollywood’s most enduring careers, divorce — from first wife Valerie Velardi in 1988, and from second wife, Marsha Garces in 2008 — had gutted his bank account.

“Divorce is expensive,” he recently said. “I used to joke they were going to call it ‘all the money’, but they changed it to ‘alimony’. It’s ripping your heart out through your wallet.”

With financial pressures weighing, the insider said that the cancellation of The Crazy Ones in May sent him spiraling.

“Robin slipped into a deep depression,” the source said. “He felt embarrassed and humiliated that the show had been a failure. It was very hard for Robin to accept. Here he was in his sixties, and forced to take a role on television for the money. It’s just not where he thought he would be at this point in his life.”

His second wife filed for divorce over 'irreconcilable differences' because he relapsed into alcoholism:

The reasons for his un-Robin-like demeanor became surprisingly clear a few days later back home in San Francisco: On March 21 Marsha filed a divorce petition to end their 19-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Friends of Robin, 56, and Marsha, 51, say that their relationship never recovered from the strain caused by Robin's alcohol relapse in 2006 after 20 years of sobriety. While Williams entered rehab and by all accounts has remained sober ever since, "the trust was broken," says a close friend of the couple. "She's hurt." They quietly separated on Dec. 31 (she stayed in their San Francisco home with Cody; he moved to Marin County), but "the marriage," says another pal, "has been over for a long time." Still, the split is "amicable," says Robin's longtime pal Richard Belzer. "It's not a vicious, bitter thing."

Robin Williams needed a strong support system, but his second wife clearly caused much ongoing grief in his life. Why abandon your spouse over alcoholic relapse? I could understand infidelity, but drinking? How will leaving him and stripping him of millions of dollars help the guy you claimed to love?

I'm surprised he chose to get married again.

This is the first celebrity death that actually upset me. While I was a fan of some of the others that passed, I didn't really grow up with and love so many of their films like I did with Robin Williams.

Looking through his IMDB, and it's crazy how many of my favorite movies and stuff he's been in.

It's starting to affect me a lot more than I first thought.

I'm not "upset"...I'm not even coping with it lol

I'm surprised at just how much this has affected me too...

When Michael Jackson died, I was really upset, because my favourite singer was gone. But prior to 2009, I knew little and cared little about Michael as a person. All I knew were charities, the documentary and accusations, and that not guilty verdict. It's only after that I started to care more about what kind of a person he was.

Robin, I knew more of him. His films were and still are huge joys in my life. I could tell, as much as we could, that he was quirky and a good hearted man.
He was Peter Pan, Genie, Mrs Doubtfire, Popeye. He was all these characters that you loved.

Michael's death stunned me, like if you were hit by something unexpectedly in the back of the head. I watched all of Michael's videos on the music channels when he died with an upset in my heart

Robin's death has depressed me right out and it hasn't gotten any easier with a bit of sleep. I tried watching Hook yesterday and I simply couldn't.

It's affected me in a way I've never felt.

If Michael's death felt like being punched to the ground, then I can say Robin's death feels like a cannonball to the heart :(

There's a video up. Everyone's Playbills had lyrics to Friend Like Me, and they did a singalong:

I'm loving the posts you've all made. I also want to thank the staff for leaving this thread open.

For those who missed Jimmy Fallon last night, he did an awesome tribute to Robin

reading this brought me to tears

I remember I was about 7 in junior school and it was a day where we all got to dress up. I might have been to a fancy dress party before, but this is the first time I remember clearly. I wore red trousers, red jumper, and my mam cut out a triangle from cardboard, covered it in tinfoil and stuck it to my jumper. I probably said nanu nanu too much that day, but I didn't care because Mork was my hero.

Rest in peace, funny man.

Really disgusting the things they'd tweeted at her. I mean...absolutely disgusting.

If that Crazy Ones cancellation seriously was a cause, I know CBS feels ****** as hell right now.
