Robin Williams - I Believe He Earned His Own Thread

I was talking to my Dad about Williams' passing and it also upset him. He remembered taking my little brother and I to a showing of 'Toys' in the early 90's and said "the movie would have been completely forgettable, if not for him. He seemed to bring an energy to every part he played, even if the script-writers, directors or his own co-stars didn't."

True.

On another note, I was watching the 'Hook' trailer and realized it got hit hard this year. Already lost Smee (Hoskins) and Pan. :(

Hoffman, you better not!!!

You know, I've been looking back at his various roles that I've watched and I honestly don't think Robin Williams ever actually turned in a bad performance. He's been in bad movies, sure, but he never once phoned it in. He gave his 100% to whatever movie, gold or crap, he put his name to.

True.

I remember when he was on the Tonight Show when Toys came out. The next guest was a little kid who was a movie critic for his local paper. They'd arranged for him to see a screening of Toys so he could review it on the show.

The kid said he really liked the movie, and Robin, who was sitting next to him, said, "Oh good, so you got the check..." :funny:

The Disney Channels have been showing Aladdin all weekend. This comes up at the end of the movie:

My friend (the son of a co-star from one of his films, but I don't feel comfortable saying who) met him and said if you watch his stand-up, then you know what he's like in person. Full of manic energy and plain hysterical. He also said he didn't talk down to him even though he was like 14 at the time. He addressed him like he was an adult and on an equal footing.

Yeah, I told my friend I was jealous.

Yeah that was one of the things I liked about him and I like about Conan. When they talk to little kids they don't act insipid or condescending.

and thank YOU for this post

There were rumors that Disney was considering a live action Aladdin down the line and possibly bringing him back for Genie only with updated pop culture riffs. If that was in the wings, I really am upset now more so.

If we could compartmentalize for a moment and separate that project from the tragedy of his death, then I don't know if it would have been a good idea. I guess we'll never know. But a lot of Aladdin's magic was in the animated antics that mirrored Williams' stream of consciousness ad-libs that were too quick and surreal for live-action. *shrug* Maybe it would have worked. We'll never know now.

Genie: Aladdin! Hello, Aladdin, nice to have you on the show. Can we call you Al, or maybe just Din? Or how about Laddie?

[turns into a Scotsman]
Genie: It sounds like, "Here, boy!"

[whistles]
Genie: C'mon, Laddie!

Don't do that, DF. :( It'll be a while before I can laugh at those lines again. The feels are still raw.

same here man, i've been watching aladdin non stop lately definitely still have the feels aswell :(

Already been one week and it still hasn't fully sunk in. I've been REALLY bummed about other celebs and public figures dying, but this may be the hardest.
