I've always seen RoboCop as the movie equivalent of The Dark Knight Returns. These two are so similar in terms of theme, mood, social commentary, even plot...
RoboCop is a really great piece of work though, it doesn't just resemble TDKR, but it's influenced by Iron Man, Judge Dredd, ROM Spaceknight, Frankenstein; not a single sequel or TV show understood what RoboCop was about. To turn him into a simple action hero is such a waste.
Take the first cartoon series, for example; it actually became what the movie was satirising. As did the movie sequels. RoboCop 3 is just an awful, cheap, watered down action movie. RoboCop 2 attempts to copy the tone of the original without understanding it, and ends up merely sadistic and empty-headed.

Great news.
