Robotech is on the way!

Dear God I hoe they do not drop the ball and try to make there own source material and jam it into one movie, it's such a massive epic.

They have to make at least 3 movies and there is enough source material to rival Lord of the Rings. I say call Peter Jackson now and tell him LOTR but with aliens and space and giant friggin Robots.

Check out some other Robotech Info here for those ignorant to the series.

Despite the original cartoon being made up of three different shows, I could see where a trilogy of films could be done if the plot was tightened up a lot.

Second Generation/Southern Cross would need the most re-writing because it was by far the least interesting of the series. The mecha, the aliens and most of the human relationships in that one were pretty boring. The hover-bikes were cool however.

They could make a whole trilogy out of Macross alone... I posted this some tiem ago:

I'm starting to think a Macross trilogy would work really fine
Macross: The begining, the SDF folds into deep space, we met the aliens, and ends with the Macross reaching earth
Macross II: War on Earth, introducing Max and Mirya ending with the almost extintion of human population (people love dark ending for the middle of a trilogy)
Macross III: Big ****ing war: Humans and aliens against aliens. I would love that really cool scene of the space battle with Minmay singing

Jennifer Aniston for Lisa Heys

Genuis casting!

My fav was when rick and lisa get captured by the zentredi and max saves both their asses.

Yeah I loved that part.

My very favorite toys of the 1980s...

That could work too. There really is too much that goes on in Macross to fit in one 2-hour movie. I did like the 1984 Macross anime movie, but it felt rushed in many parts. The characters were much more endearing in the TV series.

I'm actually not too knowledgeable of the world of Robotech, but isn't it similar to Gundam at a superficial level?

Sort of, and Gundam did come first (late '70s), but Macross is less futuristic and more straightforward than the Gundam series. Gundam takes place in the far-flung future in outer space in giant space-stations and interplanetary colonies.

Macross is set at the end of the 20th century (that will have to be changed for the movie), where the earth people only develop giant robots because they stumble on some alien technology that falls from space.

Gundam however, has no aliens. It's kind of like Firefly in that it's all about human colonies spread throughout space.

The one weakness that Macross has (in my opinion) is that the alien Zentradi would be kind of hard to accept in a live action movie. They're basically just giant 50-foot tall people with various skin colors. Plus, the whole concept of them being "shrunk down" to human size is kind of wonky for a movie as well.

It was so epic though. A drunk Roy saving the day, Rick backhanding Minmay, and the final battle. Classic. Most of my memories actually come from that movie rather than the show. As for MY casting...

Tobey wouldn't be my first choice but as he's putting it together I'll give him Rick. As I said earlier, Emmy Rossum would be an excellent Minmay. I think Brad Pitt has a great seasoned look for Roy. Anniston does look the part for Lisa/Misa but she might not be age appropriate with Tobey. I'm not sure who I'd cast. I guess just those 3 for now.

On second thought I'd probably go with James Franco for Rick and Tobey as Max. Franco's got the hair for Hunter.

I can see Brad Pitt for Roy. I don't think Anniston would then be down for joining the cast however.

The Macross movie was indeed great, it just had a very different feel from the TV show. Much darker (literally, since the color palate was very muted) and a lot more violent. Based on the typically ambiguous Japanese ending (Minmei tapping her foot repeatedly before launching into another song), I got the impression that it was mostly meant for people who were already familiar with the way the TV series ended.

You are right, I never thought of that. I guess the aliens look can be acceptable, if made more like "Do you remember love", but the shrinking is hard to swallow...

Another thing about the Zentradi...

Their two-legged "Regult" battle pods were direct rip-offs of the AT-ST scout walkers seen earlier in The Empire Strikes Back. Those designs would need to be tweaked or replaced by the other Zentradi battle armor designs.

I actually liked the Invid from 3rd Generation better, in an aesthetic way. They were much more "alien" than either the Zentradi or the Robotech Masters.

But I love those pods designs! :csad:

I don't think people would interpret this as a rip of Transformers, nor would they be turned off to this in the long run. There are plenty of Robotech fans out there (myself included of course), and the storyline is so much deeper and richer than Transformers in all regards. Hell, this was a cartoon in the 80s that was dealing with inter-racial relationships, war, racism, love and all sorts of issues. Some of the imagery was so vivid/violent that parents petitioned to get it off the air even (my favorite scene being during Force of Arms when the soldier and little girl are evaporated in the Zentradi attack on the Earth).

And if ILM does the mecha CGI, it will be pure awesome.

P.S. I think Aaron Eckhart would make a good Roy Fokker.

You'd be suprised by how shallow the surface level thought process of the average moviegoer is.

Jets morphing into robots - "Hey, that's just like Transformers!"

Granted, based on what Liz just stated, it's obviously a far different property than TF, but that doesn't mean that at the basic visual level it wouldn't be quite similar.

This thing will more than likely bomb and be automatically compared to Transformers and be seen as having far less quality.

Dennis Leary = Roy Fokker

lol

They better no screw this up.

The fan base for Macross is world wide and has had a following for 20+ years. This is much bigger than any of the American comics because it’s global following.

If this ends up being another Fist of the Northstar people are going to be pissed.

^^So much potential

Oh they will screw it up. What could be the next great sci-fi epic will instead be a typical tobey macquire cries about stuff movie

Robotech Movie is going to need its own section in the forums...

Rick - James Franco
Lisa - Erica Durance
Minmei - Emmy Rossum
Roy - Brad Pitt
Max - Tobey Mcguire
Miriya - Ali Larter

some of you guys are NUTS.

I can accept Tobey as Rick. he's a young (white)kid in the military. Kinda hard to mess that up.

now if they make Minmei a white chick or cut her from the film THEN there will be problems.

I have total faith in the possibility of this movie as long as they do NOT mess with the designs of the Valkries.(Veritechs) GUARDIAN(gerwalk) mode is a MUST!!! along with the SDF-1

I'm more for an Evangelion and Gundam film, but...

I think it would be good. Tobey isn't the best actor known to man, but....we could always have Ben Affleck.:cwink:
