The film came out today in the UK and i've just come back from watching it....
I must say the film was a lot better than i expected but the actual final fight was somewhat of a disappointment...
I was either expecting him to die in the ring or something...
no offense, but that would've seriously sucked. it'd be a terrible way to end the series. it was bad enough an idea that it didn't even get past the script stage for Rocky V.
as for the ending, if they were to keep it the way they did, I think they should have left it a mystery as to whether rocky one or not. They should have told us it was a split decision and told us the results of two judges but not the last one...
now that I would've found pretty cool. it would've hurt Dixon's character a bit, but I honestly wouldn't care much.
I also didn't get the whole thing with dixon's hand being hurt, i thought they would inform us when it was numbed up and ready to do some damage but it was never indicated to us fans...
to me, it was more than enough to inform us that it'd actually numb up and make him able to punch harder. the guy commenting the fight gave us that much exposition. going further than that would only hurt, cause they'd have to cut into the "going the distance" montage.
I also didn't like the fact the fight looked fairly realistic, I was expecting those great big sound effects they had in the other films but the sound was dumbed down quite a bit...
at first I was a bit miffed with all the HBO product placement, but it grew on me. as far as the sound effects, they sounded like they had to. this movie clearly isn't meant to be as comic booky as Rocky III or IV. now THOSE were pretty dumbed down. fun to watch, yes, but dumbed down nonetheless.
it's a nice viewing but it doesn't leave any long lasting memories, i just feel it's a better way to end the anthology than in 5...
certainly not a classic by any means, but still pretty well made and a well worthy end to the series.
also one more query, I thought drago messed him up so bad, he could never fight again, I wouldn't have believed all of that would clear up, even with all the time he spent not resting....
"When Rocky was diagnosed with brain damage, it must be noted that many athletes have a form of brain damage including football players, soccer players, and other individuals in contact sports such as rugby, etc. Rocky never went for a second opinion and yielded to his wife's wishes to stop. So with the advent of new research techniques into brain damage, Rocky was found to be normal among fighters, and he was suffering the results of a severe concussion. By today's standards Rocky Balboa would be given a clean bill of health for fighters." Sylvester Stallone, 2006 (aintitcoolnews.com interview), available at
