Rocky 6

Actually, the second half of Rocky Balboa is almost an exact remake of Rocky

Rocky Balboa packed punch with a $9.5 million weekend from six markets. The franchise's sixth installment was a knock-out in Spain with a top-ranked $3.4 million from 301 screens. In Italy, Balboa delivered a potent, second-place $3.7 million start from 331 screens, and it also opened in Mexico to $1.6 million from 369 screens.

The film came out today in the UK and i've just come back from watching it....

I must say the film was a lot better than i expected but the actual final fight was somewhat of a disappointment...

I was either expecting him to die in the ring or something...

as for the ending, if they were to keep it the way they did, I think they should have left it a mystery as to whether rocky one or not. They should have told us it was a split decision and told us the results of two judges but not the last one...he should have also knocked out dixon more...

I also didn't get the whole thing with dixon's hand being hurt, i thought they would inform us when it was numbed up and ready to do some damage but it was never indicated to us fans...

I also didn't like the fact the fight looked fairly realistic, I was expecting those great big sound effects they had in the other films but the sound was dumbed down quite a bit...

it's a nice viewing but it doesn't leave any long lasting memories, i just feel it's a better way to end the anthology than in 5...

also one more query, I thought drago messed him up so bad, he could never fight again, I wouldn't have believed all of that would clear up, even with all the time he spent not resting....

no offense, but that would've seriously sucked. it'd be a terrible way to end the series. it was bad enough an idea that it didn't even get past the script stage for Rocky V.

as for the ending, if they were to keep it the way they did, I think they should have left it a mystery as to whether rocky one or not. They should have told us it was a split decision and told us the results of two judges but not the last one...

now that I would've found pretty cool. it would've hurt Dixon's character a bit, but I honestly wouldn't care much.

I also didn't get the whole thing with dixon's hand being hurt, i thought they would inform us when it was numbed up and ready to do some damage but it was never indicated to us fans...

to me, it was more than enough to inform us that it'd actually numb up and make him able to punch harder. the guy commenting the fight gave us that much exposition. going further than that would only hurt, cause they'd have to cut into the "going the distance" montage.

I also didn't like the fact the fight looked fairly realistic, I was expecting those great big sound effects they had in the other films but the sound was dumbed down quite a bit...

at first I was a bit miffed with all the HBO product placement, but it grew on me. as far as the sound effects, they sounded like they had to. this movie clearly isn't meant to be as comic booky as Rocky III or IV. now THOSE were pretty dumbed down. fun to watch, yes, but dumbed down nonetheless.

it's a nice viewing but it doesn't leave any long lasting memories, i just feel it's a better way to end the anthology than in 5...

certainly not a classic by any means, but still pretty well made and a well worthy end to the series.

also one more query, I thought drago messed him up so bad, he could never fight again, I wouldn't have believed all of that would clear up, even with all the time he spent not resting....

"When Rocky was diagnosed with brain damage, it must be noted that many athletes have a form of brain damage including football players, soccer players, and other individuals in contact sports such as rugby, etc. Rocky never went for a second opinion and yielded to his wife's wishes to stop. So with the advent of new research techniques into brain damage, Rocky was found to be normal among fighters, and he was suffering the results of a severe concussion. By today's standards Rocky Balboa would be given a clean bill of health for fighters." Sylvester Stallone, 2006 (aintitcoolnews.com interview), available at http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30861.

Rocky 2
Rocky 3
Rocky 4
Rocky 5

Interesting,.. some of you guys saying RB is not a classic rocky film, and others ranking it as their no 2 Rocky film.
I'm about to hop out and watch it, very excited!!!!!!! will post report when I get back.

Just back from Rocky Balboa, great send off for the series.
I’m a massive fan, the first Rocky flick I saw was Rocky V in the cinema back in 1990.
I was 10 years old back then I went to watch w/ my dad and brother, 16 years later I went to see Rocky Balboa w/ my chick and I was really excited.

I think the thing that everyone had against this film,- Rocky’s age actually worked in the films favour.
Although Adrian being dead was sad, especially when Rocky was doing that tour of the neighbourhood reminiscing, it did also help to set the film apart from the other sequels.

It was harsh that Sly did not use Sage as Rocky Jr, Sage has grown a bit tubby, but I’m sure he coulda worked that off in the gym. Anyway, that other dude was good as Rocky Jr.
It was cool to see how the world had moved on since Rocky V, the kid now running w/ the suits and Rocky running a restaurant named after his wife (dig the painting from Rocky III on the wall).

The set up was cool, using the computer fight to propagate the big ring return of the Italian Stallion. Some of the speeches (the one from little Marie) were a little cheesy, but that was the only downside to this film and that hardly mattered. Paulie was his old amusing depressing drunk self, I liked his hilarious paintings of dead animals.

The best thing about this film was the fight though.
For a Rocky film, it was refreshingly realistic and restrained.
Just as I had watched the Rocky fights of old in my youth, I was nervous and excited when Rocky was about to make his walk to the ring.

In the fight rocky did look old and slow compared to his old fights, but that was ok because his style was always about just pressing forward and applying the pressure.
In the second round when Rocky floored Dixon I was pumped, though granted it was maybe because Dixon punched him awkwardly and hurt his hand.
Regarding the middle section of the fight- it was a cool mixture of the old (the music & editing style) fused to the black and white sections using small bits of colour that were first pioneered in Rocky III.
It worked.

Great fight, and a pseudo realistic result. I’m glad it was not totally OTT (no pun, heh) like Balboa Vs Drago. Now I just have to figure out were I rank it against the other films.
I loved seeing Rocky back on the big screen, now Bring on Rambo!!!

the actual final fight was somewhat of a disappointment...
I was either expecting him to die in the ring or something...

Dieing would have sucked big time.
The film was great.

as for the ending, if they were to keep it the way they did, I think they should have left it a mystery as to whether rocky one or not. They should have told us it was a split decision and told us the results of two judges but not the last one...he should have also knocked out dixon more...

The point of this was to make the film more realistic so that people could take the film more seriously.
I think this worked perfectly.
Obviously, this being a Rocky film he was gonna do some damage, but if Rocky had won at 55 or pummelled Dixon Clubber Lang style, film audiences world wide would have laughed.

I also didn't get the whole thing with dixon's hand being hurt, i thought they would inform us when it was numbed up and ready to do some damage but it was never indicated to us fans...

Well it was clear to me what happened he just punched Rock awkwardly and hurt his hand.

I also didn't like the fact the fight looked fairly realistic, I was expecting those great big sound effects they had in the other films but the sound was dumbed down quite a bit...

Well yeah they made the film more realistic.
Those sound effects are pretty dumb themselves.
I love the old films but if they had made the new film exactly like the old ones it would have sucked and got ripped by everyone including the critics. As it stands this film seems to have the highest critic ratings of all the sequels. I don’t think you really understand boxing the sport, or what makes a good realistic-esqe film about an aged fighter.

it's a nice viewing but it doesn't leave any long lasting memories, i just feel it's a better way to end the anthology than in 5...

also one more query, I thought Drago messed him up so bad, he could never fight again, I wouldn't have believed all of that would clear up, even with all the time he spent not resting....

For me this film defiantly leaves lasting memories.
I guess it all comes down to how much of a fan you are etc.
Also regarding Drago and brain damage, I think they just skipped over that one, heh.

You know what though Catman, Rocky IV is such a guilty pleasure. It's so over the top, it's brilliant. Entertainment value is like 37 out of 10.

It's only a guilty pleasure for lame-o's who care what other people, more specifically film critics think of Rocky IV.

I could not give a f-uck for film snobbery.
Rocky IV is awesome.

If Rocky V was never made though then we'd never be able to have a film like Rocky 6. It wouldn't have been near the same story at all. The events leading to Rocky losing all of his money and coming back down to his roots are what made this film happen. Kind of weird huh?

My ranking for the series-

Rocky
Rocky IV
Rocky II
Rocky Balboa
Rocky III
Rocky V

As for the best of each element-

Best Fight- Balboa Vs Drago

Best Training- Rocky II

Best Montage- Rocky IV/ No Easy Way Out

Best Speech- Rocky Balboa/ 2nd Rocky & Rocky jnr

Most Exciting Film- Rocky IV

Best Opponent- Ivan Drago

Best Non-main Fight- Balboa Vs Thunderlips/ Rocky III

A Great and solid film... wow 2006 and 2007 have had some tremendously kick ass films... and not of the oversapped Paul Haggis type shmaltz overplayed melodramatic crap like Crash... but some damn solid films like this and Pan's Labyrinth...

I still watch the speech from time to time... it's a reminder really for what there is to do in life... it is just such a well written kick ass scene.

Hahaha...there's so many great speeches in RB, which one are you talkin' about? :woot:

THE speech.. the best one where he talks about surviving life and taking the Hits to his son
