Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

It can't be worse than Thor: The Dark World, which is my worst MCU movie.
Yeah me too. But even if the film is as bad as Thor The Dark World (which I will know when I watched it), MCU's worst is still far from the worst of Marvel cbms of Sony/foX/New Line/Universal.

Though I would hate to see if this film is really going to be grouped with the likes of Thor2, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3. Some of the reviews are already mentioning Thor The Dark World when reviewing this. And unlike those films, this isn't a sequel and its the debut film of the Eternals. While Incredible Hulk was at least watchable compare to Hulk 2003.

I'm hoping this is at least better than WW84, as that is the most recent comic book movie that I didn't like that also disappointed me; and imo, its worst than all mcu movies.

Wow it's still early but did not expect this movie to flirt with a 58 metascore. In fact I thought it would be the best reviewed superhero film this year. Then again, I also thought Wonder Woman 1984 would be, so what do I know? But mixed reviews in Metacritic only happened with three other MCU movies, the last one being The Dark World, so that's not so good.

In a year where we have a multiverse, nostalgia fueled trip Spider-Man film coming, you expected Eternals to be better reviewed than that?

Of course. Nostalgia lane is a tricky thing with critics and multiverse is a theme that can easily go sideways. And the last two movies Zhao made had 92 and 93 on Metacritic which is huge and a 93 and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was the safest bet.

Now, if we're talking audience scores and what I was looking forward to the most, that's a whole other conversation.

I'm not eXactly a fan of Jon Watts' Spider-Man movies, so yeah I never thought No Way Home is going to be the best superhero of the year.

Hmmm, the reviews I've been seeing today seem much more positive than the other day.

Yeah, like I said, Eternals is front loaded with reviews from "top critiX", who are usually harder to impress than most. Thor The Dark World is actually rotten if top critiX are only counted. I remember it was around 56%.

Eternals is now at 76%. Get that certified fresh rating!

Wherever this ends up on RT, you can’t deny this is one of those Marvel films with the most interesting RT score changes in a long time. It’s gone up, then down, up again, now it’s going down. It looks like it may stay within the seventies, but it’s still a little surprising this movie is going through this. Especially a movie from an Oscar winning filmmaker.

To me, it’s behaving like WW1984 in the early. That did the same thing in the 80s. Will be interesting to see how it goes

And she gave Feige the best pitch he ever heard. So, what the hell happened during production?

This should be a home run and Zhao should be joining Nolan when it comes to indie directors successfully making into the CBM world. Instead, she'll probably join Josh Trank.

Certified Proof that there are NO guarantees in life.

Come on man, that is complete bullcrap. The movie has a 70+ RT score. Not one around 10. This ain't even in the same league, let alone same sport as Trank.

Movie doesn't score a 90 percent, and suddenly people lose their minds!

Right. As if, as many people have said with many movies these past few years, a film's status is determined based on whether it has some Certified Fresh ranking. Even if, Thanos forbid, the film fell under 60 percent, the sky isn't suddenly going to start falling.

Okay, Trank is a bit harsh. So, would Cathy Yan or the Captain Marvel directors be a better comparison? :oldrazz:

We shall see in the next 2-3 weeks when 200+ reviews are in.

72% vs. 9% ?

You are out of your mind.

I expect No way home to make all the money, but because of it scope and everything they're trying to fit into it, I expect it to be messy. I was never expecting great reviews for NWH, but I believe reviews would be okay. Jon Watts is good at making movies that are loved by both critics and audience.

This has a 72% rating from critics atm...

It hasn't been seen by audiences...

Chill. Zhao's career will be just fine :funny:

Even if it goes Rotten, I don't think the people who are not liking the film describe it as an inherently bad film. Just over ambitious. Frankly, Marvel Studios films need some ambition and risk. The formula is becoming very, very, very stale and safe.

From the sounds of it, given the film’s apparent radical departure from the MCU formula in the fact that it’s much more serious and slower paced, and ponderous I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie doesn’t sit well with general audiences, and this movie gets like a B cinemascore.

And bares pointing out an MCU movie hasn’t gotten a B score in over a decade since the first Thor film in 2011. This film could possibly break that decade long straight ‘A’ cinemascore track record. Of course, I could be wrong this movie just gets an ‘A’ or an ‘A’- but we’ll wait and see.

I think even if the MCU produced an objectively bad film (from a universal perspective), "The Phantom Menace" factor would prevent fans from turning on that particular film.
