Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

It sounds more than anything like this film will be pretty divisive. Like being very different from the typical Marvel movie is both a blessing and a curse. I'm still pretty optimistic, TBH. I'd always rather see a movie try something crazy and ambitious and fall short than something stale and safe.

Down to 72%. Beginning to think Feige and Marvel made a mistake with this film.

Because they made a movie that is getting good reviews? RT scores don't make a movie a "mistake" in any way. That ultimately will be decided at the financial level when we see the BO results and we will see what crowd reaction will be. But calling it a mistake cause it isn't scoring a 90% on RT? The tomato meter is not THAT important

Perri Nemiroff didn’t like the movie:

And this is the first time I’ve seen her actively disliking an MCU movie. I’ve never remembered her disliking an MCU movie before this. Wow. :wow:

It is still positive though very possibly at the lower ranks on MCU critic scale. Hopefully this won’t discourage the studio from taking new approaches in future projects and take the safer route instead. If the BO underwhelms too I can see that happens and the murmurs of re-emergence of a “creative committee” led by Disney execs is not out of the realm of possibility.

The box office will be down relative to some MCU thanks to Covid. I think the realistic goal they should have is beat Shang-Chi

At least would make critic job easier. “It’s the same old Marvel formula but it’s well made enough to enjoy.” 3/5. 80% instant fresh.

When they lose those who are normally pretty easy critics to get positive/decent reviews from, it makes me wonder what some of the more on-the-fence type critics will think.

We’ve had 10 years of fairly consistent content that’s kind of played it on the safer side, with maybe few exceptions here or there that still don’t veer too much from the laid path. I’d rather this film shoot for the stars and miss somewhat than keep on retreading the same old ground.

Hope Feige and company aren’t too reactionary to the negative feedback and keep trying new things and taking more risks, instead of going back to the usual formula. I’ve been enjoying their Disney+ content, though not completely perfect, and hope they don’t cave in to the same kind of fan response that brought about The Rise of Skywalker.

I mean this movie is getting so far average at worst reviews. The lowest I can this see sinking down to is in the high 60% range which will make it join the same club as Incredible Hulk & Thor: The Dark World. I don’t expect it’ll plummet down enough to be the first MCU film to be rated rotten on RT, but you never know.

I’m actually curious if this movie does end up rotten how reactionary Marvel Studios will be towards the reception. I mean, after this, I’d be shocked if Chloe Zhao is invited back to direct a sequel(if it even happens).
I don't think she would be back, if this ends up as the worst reviewed MCU film ever. I also think given that this is the most obscured ip that Marvel Studios have given a film,I don't think it would encourage them to give another obscure IP their own feature film very soon.

It can't be worse than Thor: The Dark World, which is my worst MCU movie.

As long as it doesn't go below 70, I think it could stabilize from where it is right now - preventing a rotten score. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings iirc peaked at 94 and only went down to 92. Black Widow, it started with 84 and now its 79. There has to be a massive wave of negative reviews, for it to lose 13 points. Its going to be long two weeks.

Black Widow was at 89% after 53 reviews so Eternals starting so low (now 71% after 41 reviews) and with likely many mixed reviews to come, the MCU's streak of fresh films is going to be pushed.

I didn't catch Black Widow with 89%.

There's a reason most cinematic universes don't work out.

It's because finding the right formula is difficult.

If it were easy then every franchise would be as successful as the MCU.

Critics, fans, and general audiences love the Marvel formula.

If it ain't broke...

I feel like I've really missed what others are seeing on how Marvel was trying to make this stand out as something original. How were they switching up the game here? Outside of pretty landscape shots and potential within a great Director, the marketing kinda painted it as a team Superhero movie without much focus on the story, characters or villains. Along with some odd humor regarding other characters in the MCU.

The criticisms seem like legit pacing, convoluted exposition and story issues. That's not the good kind of "different" Marvel should be doing. Most audiences and Critics like original comic book films. Plenty of past Marvel, DC and even Fox films/shows are proof of that.

They may like it because it doesn’t feel like a normal MCU movie.

Hiring a writer-director who specialises in muted, documentary-like dramas for an action spectacular about interstellar demigods may not have been the wisest choice

It's possible that some more magnetic actors might have helped, but for the first time, Marvel's sharp eye for casting has gone awry. As soon as Robert Downey Jr was seen as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, it became almost impossible to picture anyone else in the roles. The so-so cast of the Eternals doesn't present that challenge. Madden may look suitably godlike when he poses in a desert and squints at the horizon, but he – like several other key cast members – lacks the acting chops and the charisma to convince you that he is a real person, let alone a real superhuman alien.

Wow, Marvel is usually known for perfect casting. I hope I don't feel the same way, especially for Ikaris of all people. I've noticed that most didn't praise him and Sersi as much as others, that's not looking good for the movie since it's centered around the two of them.

So what is exactly wrong with the movie? Is it because it strays too much from the Marvel formula, not what people were expecting? Or is it because it doesn't live up to its story on its own terms? If it's the latter, that's disappointing.

Either way, I like Zhao, and even if this doesn't totally work, I'm at the point where if it's at least interesting, I'll welcome a partially unsuccessful film over how goddamn boring Marvel has been. At least it kind of shakes things up.

Wow it's still early but did not expect this movie to flirt with a 58 metascore. In fact I thought it would be the best reviewed superhero film this year. Then again, I also thought Wonder Woman 1984 would be, so what do I know? But mixed reviews in Metacritic only happened with three other MCU movies, the last one being The Dark World, so that's not so good.

All I know is that I loved Interstellar and this is currently 2% higher!!! :wow:
