New interview with Brandon Routh where he mentions a little about Superman Returns

http://www.canada.com/entertainment...rman+franchise+admits+took/6703029/story.html

The actor does not talk around the disappointment he felt when the Superman franchise fizzled in the wake of mediocre box-office.

"That's pretty evident . . . it didn't go the way I was expecting,'' he says of the 2006 blockbuster-hopeful in which he starred as the Man of Steel.

"I wondered was it me? Was it them? Was there something I could have done differently? You know, you have perceptions of certain things and you are promised certain things, and when they don't pan out the way you expect, you have to readjust,'' he says.

"Either you wilt in the face of it. Or you get stronger. So I had to realize this may not be the path I was expecting, but maybe it's a better path. So instead of pouting about it, you know, get a stiff upper lip and move on. I am a stronger person for all of it.''

Not only stronger, Routh says he's been released from the yolk of a hefty alter-ego.

"We were supposed to do more (Superman movies) but I don't know what the reality would have been like. I don't know if that would have been better for me or not. The fact is this is where I am now", he says.

"And maybe this is a better place. You know, I turned down a lot of roles because I thought there was going to be another Superman movie and I was very, very protective of that image and that character because he doesn't wear a mask.''

Routh says he's happy he no longer has to worry about protecting the wholesome image of Clark Kent, even if that leaves him without a mega-budget shingle to define his professional identity.

Sounds like there's no hard feelings there (now, at least), and he feels like it was potentially a weight off his shoulders when they decided not to make a sequel and recast him.

The movies he has done so far are not really that good.

I hope that he will get some good roles, even if that is in an ensemble cast, he should take it.

He's a likeable guy, but I don't see any vast range in him acting-wise, so I think if he's offered a sitcom or something a bit more steady with a fairly normal character that doesn't call for too much acting chops, he should take it.

He's doing a CBS sitcom, he was just promoting it this week on CityTV but meh..

He still looks like Superman. If they ever did another Superman series I would want him cast as Superman.

Yup, he'd be pretty good for a new Superman TV series.

No matter how disappointed I was when Superman Returns didn't get a sequel (or more than one), I think in the end it might be the right choice not to do so. I've never made it a secret; I think it's a great film. Sure, it had its flaws, but which film doesn't? But it never happened, so we'll have to deal with that.

To argue your statements that he's not a good actor and he hasn't done anything good; I beg to differ. I agree he hasn't done many good projects. Some were downright horrible (Dylan Dog), but I thought he was great in Chuck and his new film 'Crooked Arrows' seems like a good one, and he's doing a good job acting in it. But I haven't seen it in full yet, since it's not been released where I live. So yeah, I think he's a pretty good actor. Perhaps his poor choices in projects has something to do with the fact, as he stated in the afore mentioned interview, he doesn't want projects that may have the same effect as Superman Returns, a projected block-buster that doesn't do as well as hoped for. Even though he has put it behind him, I get the feeling he still feels a bit insecure about if it was his doing or not. But he's got other things on his mind now (becoming a daddy firstly, hehehe. :D)

I'm not sure if I want to see him return as Superman in a series. Although Smallville was done well special effects-wise, it was, in my opinion, not very well done story-wise. The first three seasons were pretty good, but after that it all went down hill. I don't think Brandon Routh would want any of that anyway. Lois & Clark was just horrible, now that I look back (and I'm not talking about special effects). Superman needs a big blasting film, not a series with a bad story.

And that's my rant for today.

Edit: Oh yeah, he's still cute... :hrt:

In fairness to Routh, they never let him get out of Reeve's shadow. The film had a bad plot, was tied to the old movies, in a way that didn't help, and only hurt the film.

Not much he could do.

I don't want to see him in a Superman TV series or in a solo Superman movie either.

If WB decide to make a Justice League movie without Cavill, only then He should give a screen test for Superman, if he is selected, then I would be fine with that as I don't consider him as a bad actor.

Well the same can be said about Christopher Reeve.

And what's your point? The same can be said for many actors, but I'm talking about one in particular - Routh.

So all those many actors have played Superman?

My point? He doesn't have to have a vast range to be a great Superman. Reeve was the living proof of that.

I really like the guy and while I hated the direction that WB and Singer took with SR, I feel bad for Routh that it didn't work out and he didn't get a 2nd chance. In retrospect by making SR a sequel to Donner's continuity, they put Routh in a position to fail.

SR was literally just a homage to the Christopher Reeve films, nothing more. They should have just made an original movie, not an alternate sequel.

Well I am looking forward to Man of Steel.

If any of the "other" actors like Cavill (who was considered at one point for SR), Welling had been cast as Superman in SR, he would have found himself in the same position as Routh is in currently.

This.
The movie contributed to Routh not getting many good roles after SR. As the movie was not written to show much dialogue for Superman and the script had very less screen time for the hero.

You're missing my point completely. I never said he had to have a vast acting range to play Superman. It's not Shakespeare for crying out loud, I get that. I was talking about his limited range affecting his choice of future projects which are offered to him, hence why I said something fairly steady and regular on TV would probably suit him best.

Yep, and the film too. Now back to pretending it doesn't exist.

Why would you want to pretend it doesn't exist? I don't understand that? Sure, it wasn't the greatest film ever made, but in itself it's really not bad. Sure, it was a continuation of the Donner films, which made the film somewhat cheesy at times, but it had some great action scenes, Clark and Superman were portrayed well by Brandon. Kevin Spacey made a great Luthor and even Jimmy and Perry White were portrayed very well by the respective actors. It's just too bad it was doomed to fail. Had the script been completely new and different, then I'm certain their would've been sequels. I think the people who worked on it deserved a sequel. If they had a different director, and a different plot, everything could've been different...

The Superman mythos is much more than the Donner interpretation so that first and foremost was my main disappointment. I love Superman and Superman 2 but that was from a different time.

Superman Returns would have been great if it came out in 1989.

I don't know how MOS will workout but all I want is a Superman movie that includes some of the best elements of STAS and how Superman was portrayed in Justice League/JLU.

Then again, Reeve didn't have exactly the best of acting careers after Superman.

General audience and movie execs. cannot imagine the actor who played as Superman in any other roles.

Superman actors always seem to have problem finding good work, that happened with Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh and even actors in TV series like Dean Cain, Tom Welling are not having a great acting career.

Some of the actors who have recently got many roles are not really that much better than Routh, for example - Tatum, Worthington and Taylor Kitsch, but they seem to have some steady offers for roles in big movies.

Cavill has done some more movies before MOS, so hopefully he will not find it as difficult as Routh to get roles after MOS, but I doubt that he will be as successful as Hugh Jackman or Michael Fassbender.

Well, at least we know which party he supports. ;-) If you ask me, a good choice. Hehehe...

Well he did work for Obama's campaign in Des Moines, and his buddy Kal Penn is part of the White House staff.
