Ryan Reynolds in Talks to Tackle Live-Action Adaptation of '80s Video Game 'Dragon's Lair' (Exclusive)

Reynolds is in talks to star in and produce a live-action feature adaptation of Dragon’s Lair, one of the most iconic arcade video games from the 1980s.

After almost a year of negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal to pick up the rights to the game. Roy Lee will produce via his Vertigo Entertainment with Trevor Engelson of Underground Films. Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy are also producing. Reynolds will produce via his banner, Maximum Effort.

Dan and Kevin Hageman, who worked on The Lego Movie and most recently Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, will write the script.

Awesome news!!

I hope they get a great and imaginative director for this.

Ha, that's nuts.

This also surprised me, as Bluth and Goldman were trying to get an animated film off the ground using Kickstarter a few years ago.

Frankly Space Ace is the one that would be awesome as live action but baby steps.

Hope it‘s animated - old Bluth style

I'm looking forward to a live action adaptation. In my opinion the video game IS the animated version. They gotta find a talented director, though. One who can bring wit and charme to the story.

I wasn’t expecting live action for this but will be interested with what they come up with.

Well since this is a fantasy setting & getting a live treatment...if this gets made before HeMan/Masters of the Universe......something is definitely off.

And you couldn't have just said that in the He-Man thread? It's not like these two projects depend on each other. It's not a race, by the way. Some movies need more time and development than others. Sometimes it pays off to wait ("Deadpool"), others it doesn't.

In some ways, a Dragon's Lair movie is easier to make. It's a more clear pure medieval setting (no air chariots, laser rifles, cyborgs), it's a more straight ahead comedy, the main hero is a skinny goofball instead of a nearly-naked homoerotic roid monster, and you don't have a multinational toy company signing off on your creative decisions.

It's also backed by a major star right now. He-Man... doesn't have that.

Well, we'll see if this movie still gets off the ground.

Also, Dragon's Lair is a fairly simple compact story with a limited amount of characters.

Whoa, calm down there Sparky. What are you the posting police?
If thats the first thought that popped into my head, regardless how dumb (and I admit I do have many of those) what's the difference?

It's okay, dude, I was calm to begin with.

The next question is ......if Dragon's Lair does get made..............can Space Ace be far behind?

Ryan Reynolds Says Netflix Is Taking a Big Swing With 'Dragon's Lair' Live-Action Adaptation [Exclusive]

I can say that Netflix has approached Dragon's Lair in a spirit of partnership that I've never really seen before. They're taking such a swing with it. How we're approaching it and attacking it and what we're doing with it, I think will be pretty surprising to a lot of people. In its scope I mean. And I'm not sure, but I don't think anyone's ever tried it before quite like this. So I'm curious to see how it'll go. It really intersects in a unique way with technology that I've never been privy to in the entertainment industry. So they're taking some kind of pretty innovative stabs at this particular IP in a way that I'm blown away with. And I'm excited that they're as along for the ride as we are.

Reynolds went on to describe the Dragon's Lair adaptation as a "living, breathing thing as opposed to just a piece of entertainment you watch." He also pointed out that his production company, Maximum Effort, has been working on the project for the last two years which was part of the original report back in 2020.

Who is Working on the Dragon's Lair Live-Action Adaptation?
Reynolds is set to also produce the film through his Maximum Effort production company alongside Roy Lee via his Vertigo Entertainment and Trevor Engelson of Underground Films. Gary Goldman, Jon Pomeroy, and the original game's producer, director, and animator Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Land Before Time) will also produce the film, with Bluth and Goldman also set to direct the upcoming adaptation. Dan and Kevin Hageman, who wrote Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and earned story credit on The Lego Movie, will pen the script.

We’ll see if this still happens.

“Living breathing thing” sounds like it’ll be like a “choose your own adventure” interactive with the movie or something.

So like Bandersnatch from Black Mirror, then? Ohhhhh, this is gonna be interesting if true!

Also, glad to get confirmation that Don Bluth is indeed still directing this despite the format change.
