Hey sorry if this has been discussed but I didn't see a thread about it. I was wondering if I could hear some opinions on Sam Hamm's draft of Batman Returns (simpley titled Batman 2).

It's extremely different. I liked it, but I don't know if I prefer this to the movie we got or not. I think it'd be really interesting to see how the finished film would have turned out using this storyline and how the franchise would have went on afterwards.

Ultimately, i was glad we got Batman Returns...

theres a few things you could pinch from that screenplay but overall batman returns was more satisfying for me.

What we got was better. Penguin searching for buried treasure in the bat cave was...

This version is certainly more of a direct sequel in my estimation, and all. But count me in as another who is glad we got the Batman Returns film that was ultmately given the greenlight. I will say this script has it's moments though.

As someone who is too lazy to read it all, anyone care to list the highlights of the script?

Thanks for the link, just started getting into it but I do like it so far.

I have nothing against BR and it holds good memories for me, but this is a very interesting script (can't judge completely until I am through).

I would have liked a more direct sequel to the original so this is a nice read getting to picture the actors in a new setting.

I will post more once I have finished.

The script has more of an action/adventure tone to it. The only similarities between "Batman 2" and Batman Returns are Penguin & Catwoman as villains, the Christmas setting, and Batman is framed for murder. I think he also turns his cape into a glider a couple times.

The plot was basically about Penguin and Catwoman killing Gotham's elite citizens--the Five Familys--which includes Bruce Wayne, and Batman is being framed for the murders. From each millionaire, a raven statuette is stolen. Long story short: a dark secret about the families' wealth is revealed to Bruce and the combined ravens form a maps showing where the stolen gold and silver bullion is. The real highlight of the script to me is the finale which takes place in Wayne manor and the Batcave!
There is also a subplot about the poor living in the park. Dick Grayson is introduced as a homeless kid who is a vigilante of sorts in the park that Batman meets. Bruce eventually takes him in. While Dick has a Robin costume, I don't believe he wears it any and is only referred to as "Dick" in the script.

The script reads like a more traditional sequel than Batman Returns. Vicki Vale is still present throughout, and the opening has scrap parts of the Batwing being sold. The storyline isn't bad and is actually pretty tight but it seems like an odd story to use as a second film in my opinion. I think it would've been interesting if the movie would have been as controversial as Batman Returns was. While it's not as bizarre or grotesque as Returns it does have a lot of R-rated violence and an S&M sequence involving Catwoman. Of course those things could have been toned down in rewrites and with filming. It is clear why Burton would not want to do it. The script doesn't match his sensibilities at all, but I could see other directors using this script if Burton chose not to return.

i'd like to see what hamm's subsequent drafts of this script would have given us. there's a lot of stuff i like in there, like the capeless batman riding a horse through gotham central park, and the climax in wayne manor. i really don't like catwoman's characterization much and prefer the returns version of her much more. the penguin seems much more faithful in hamm's version, and i like the vibe of it being a continuing story from '89.

Didn't Marlyon Wayans win the part, before they decided to not use the character?

In script drafts written closer to the start of production, Robin was a garage mechanic who assists Batman in retaking the Batmobile after the Penguin hijacks it. That's the version Wayans was going to play.

That's right. He also appeared again during the sequence when the penguins had rockets strapped to their backs. In this script he is only referred to as the Kid and his mechanic clothes were to be modeled after the traditional Robin costume. After he helps Batman the final time he says he likes being called Robin before he leaves. On the Batman Anthology documentary Waters said, "We went with a thing where it'd be hinted at and then developed in a later movie."

Aslo on the anthology documentary Hamm said he wrote two drafts before Burton had agreed to do it. In his own words, "most of the stuff I had done for that movie wound up being scraped, and the decision for that was to go with a whole new direction with the story."

Since it's been brought up here's Daniel Waters early draft of Batman Returns which basically reads like a rough draft of the movie we ended up getting.
