Sam Raimi Alien Invasion Movie Coming?

Vulture is reporting that "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi and District 9 producer Bill Block are in negotiations with Warner Bros. to set up a new movie called EDF, which stands for "Earth Defense Force." Raimi is not expected to direct.

The film is reportedly based on a script by Air Force One screenwriter and "Castle" executive producer Andrew Marlowe. Block's QED International (District 9) is co-financing the project.

The movie is said to open with an alien attack to test our defenses and a more massive attack coming in 10 months. Before then, world leaders have to figure out how to fight off the coming invasion.

Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and District 9 producer Bill Block are deep into negotiations with Warner Bros. to set up a massive new movie called EDF, based on a script from Air Force One screenwriter and Castle executive producer Andrew Marlowe. Block's QED International, which helped finance District 9, is co-financing the project. We've read it and are unashamed to say we love it: Mix Top Gun with Independence Day and add a pinch of The Last Starfighter, and you'll get EDF — which stands for "Earth Defense Force," though we hear the title may change — about Earth's response to an imminent alien invasion.

In EDF, we open on a U.S. military operation gone awry: Sent to rescue what they believe is a sub that's accidentally bumped into a mine in Chinese waters, U.S. naval aviators quickly wind up engaged in a dogfight with a squadron of Chinese air force pilots. Soon, planes on both sides are being shot out of the sky, but not by the Chinese or U.S. pilots — by three alien attack fighters, which soon depart and destroy many of the world's landmarks and military installations, then vanish. It's a test of Earth's defensive capabilities, and we failed. Shortly after, NASA detects a radiation signature in a nearby galaxy, indicating a far more massive attack coming in about ten months, and world leaders set about trying to create super-aircraft and weapons that can fight off the coming invasion.

No word on who'll direct yet — our spies say it's not Raimi — but the project is going out to directors imminently.

Morel is also in talks to direct Warner Bros.’s EDF, aka Earth Defense Force, a giant alien invasion movie which is being produced by Sam Raimi and Bill Block, head of QED International, the outfit that is financing the project.

The story is set after three alien fighters attack the planet, leaving countries humiliated. The governments of Earth then race to create a space fighting force in preparation for a second attack by an approaching alien horde.

Warners is high on Morel for EDF, which is a favorite amongst certain execs but is waiting to see how Ouija plays out. Ouija is a high priority for Universal and would certainly go before EDF.

Meanwhile, the studio has also faced a setback on its "Ouija" project, a big-budget picture adapted from the Hasbro board game that's being produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company.

Universal executives met Thursday with "Taken" director Pierre Morel, who had been considered a front-runner for the directing job. But Morel and the executives couldn't find common creative ground, according to two people familiar with the conversations who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the discussions. That leaves executives and producers to continue casting a net for directing candidates.

Universal still hopes to make the movie in time for a Thanksgiving 2012 release.

Pierre Morel has now focused his attention on EDF, aka Earth Defense Force, a giant alien invasion movie that's being produced by Sam Raimi and Bill Block, head of QED International, the outfit that is financing the project. Warner Bros. is distributing.

Morel, the director of Taken, was in talks at the same time to direct EDF and Ouija, the adaptation of the Hasbro board game set up at Universal.

Morel made a presentation to Universal execs Thursday afternoon outlining his take on Ouija; Universal ended up passing on it.
