Santa Claus, a false idol

I don't think the believe in Santa is believing in a false idol as nobody is praising or worshiping him really He's a guy that brings kids presents. It is sad that some Christians think more about the presents than the birth of little baby Jesus.
I agree. Santa isn't worshipped. He's looked up to and seen as someone who represents the spirit of Christmas, that is, the spirit of giving, of kindness, of compassion and of selflessness. I don't think Christians should think of Santa as a 'false idol' because all he's doing is carrying out the message of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus gave man the greatest gift of all, giving his own life in order to save us. Gifts/Presents... they are symbols of what Jesus did for us.

I see Santa as a symbol and an ideal. He's like... the Batman.

Nobody worships Santa Claus...everyone knows that you must worship The Great Pumpkin.

First off this thread is directed at people who believe in God. If you want a debate about the existence of God, then take it to another thread. I believe one already exists.

Jolly ol St Nick is admired and adored by kids all over the world. Santa has God like powers, delivering gifts all over the globe in a matter of hours, while gaining access to peoples homes without a problem. Santa even appears God-like fashion(minus the fat).

Ex. 20:5, "Don't worship nor serve them, any of man's created God-like idols or gods,"

The praise of Santa even takes away what Christmas is all about-The birthday of Jesus.

So do people here who believe in God think Santa should be phased out? Because he is false idol

I agree that Santa and the commercialization of Christmas distracts from what is suppose to commemorate the birth of Jesus.

But phasing Santa out of Christmas would have be done on an individual basis. Phasing out Santa from American society would be like trying to phase out everything that Christians feel is secular and of course there could never be agreement by all Christians on what should stay and what should go. Also this is a multicultural/multi-religious society so not everyone is Christian.

Batman vs. Santa

I would read it!

Lie. Santa's not dead. He's immortal.

Btw, I almost made a typo when I typed SANTA... :o
I read a joke about something similar in Reader's Digest once...

"You ever hear the one about the dyslexic devil worshipper? Sold his soul to Santa."

I've not heard of that joke but it's pretty funny. I really did typed "Satan" instead of "Santa". Thankfully, I re-read my post before submitting it.

Reader's Digest is intolerant of people with dyslexia? What a bunch of arrogant pricks.

It's really not that deep. You can believe in God and still join in on the festivities, including the idea of Santa and whatever. It's really no big deal. We all know he's not real, but it's fun and it hurts no one. It's you super-religious Christians who ruin it for everyone, don't be so religious. I'm sure God doesn't even care! It's not like you're bowing down and worshipping Santa. That's a different situation.

Stupid topic!

 I was just about to type something up very similar to that.

All good things but just to let you know that line you chucked in there -
"I'm sure God doesn't even care!"

Pretty sure that is all he does all the time is care about everything. Just keeping you in the loop :)

Not to hijack the thread but I agree with JManspice. There is no physical evidence that can be tested to help support Creationism. Nothing that can be tested. The scientific theory cannot be applied to it in any way. If we start including creationism into Science class we might as well introduce Alchemy into chemistry.

Now this might shock some of you, but speaking as a christian...I agree completely. Leave creationism at home and church. (However I feel the Ten Commandments are a different story - Seperation of Church and State is a widely misinterpreted ammendment...but anyway...)

With that being said, I feel that more emphasis needs to be applied to science class stating that evolution and the current THEORY of how life began and came into its present status quo is just that - our current understanding of who things might have occured. We can't currently test our scientific theory on the origins of life and be proven right 100% as of yet, and hell, who knows, 100 years down the line there might be a new theory thats even more plausible. Just like life, science is constantly evolving and what we might claim as scientific fact is always under threat of being found false by new discoveries. And I feel that truth needs to be included in discussion of origins of life.

I'm not a Christian, but I am curious to know what constitutes worship or creating a false idol amongst other people. Would Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc fall under this category? For that matter, if Santa is a false idol, couldn't I make an argument for almost any fictional character whom people look up to being a false idol?

good question. My answer would be thus:

A false idol is anything that you compare to, take the place of, or treat as you would God. In other words, if someone IS praying to, worshiping Santa, then yes, Santa would be a false idol to THAT person.

I doubt most people worship Spider-Man, Superman, etc. Look up to, admire, enjoy readinging about, sure, but worship? Nah.

But looking up to and admiring someone is considered hero worship, which suggets to me that it might be a form of worship. I also doubt people pray to Spider-Man and such (unless they are uber geeks), but I think many comic nerds may be guilty of this form of worship.

Batfans are a good example...which is interesteing because if you think about it, Batman is the complete opposite of Jesus.

The above few post go back to what I mentioned before in this thread about superfans that do in fact put other idols above God.

Lack of religous respect I think I said.

I don't think anyone can doubt christmas has been bought up by corporate capilisation as a big money spinning opportunity.

I couldn't imagine ramadan having a mascot which took away the idea of the reason of fasting.

at the very worst, commercial xmas (national holiday) with santa should be separated from the religious aspect. The santa one should be a national holiday, the religious one (as with other religions) should not but should be respected by christians only (or christian curious individuals).

I do understand the thread starters points and I also do understand that branding and marketing and sport and general celebrities are all somewhat idols but it doesn't make it right to buy into anything that ultimately wants to take money out of your pocket.

Just about everything want my money these days.....

My banks want to give me super credit no limit cards....lol
