I was never one of those people who worried about Daniel Craig. Of course that was largely because I had given up on the Bond franchise at that point. I was of the belief that the series could never recover from the one-two punch of sheer awfulness that was "The World is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day."
I was giving up. I wasn't going to ever watch another Bond movie. So when they announced Casino Royale, as a reboot, I was curious, but not excited. When they announced that it was going to be set in modern day instead of the 50's or 60's, I was doubtful.
When they announced the casting of Daniel Craig, I honestly could not have cared less. I didn't know him from Adam and I didn't judge him one way or the other. I was totally apathetic.
A funny thing happened, though. When people began to vocally trash the guy, and I saw their reasons for doing so... I started to like the casting. It meant we had a profound shake-up happening, and that was long overdue, IMO. So I began to get cautiously optimistic.
When I saw the first pictures of him as Bond, I thought he had a great look. I was thinking about how my man Connery was rugged and cruel-looking, the perfect Bond. And I was thinking how far away from that we'd gone with Moore and even Brosnan (whose casting I supported). What I saw in Daniel Craig was the look of a villain, and that had me curious. He looks nothing like Connery but he has the same intensity.
And then the trailer. When I saw the trailer, and I heard Judi Dench say, "this may be too much for a blunt instrument to understand..." and I saw Bond beating the hell out of a guy in a bathroom... I sat up in my chair and went, "my God, it's not possible they've got it this right."
But they did.
