Supergirl Season 1 Episode 1- "Pilot"

First, the look... the actress is great, but my vision of Supergirl doesn't have sandy brown hair.

Is that a criticism? .......................................................................................................
............................................really?????

"sigh"
No wonder I hate these guys....

The Good:

-The lead: Melissa Benoist is fantastic. She's adorable, and funny, and instantly endearing/likeable. Plus she fills out the suit well, both literally and figuratively.

-The rest of the cast as good for the most part.

-The action/effects were quite good.

-The main villain seems potentially interesting.

Stuff I'm not quite sure of:

-Cat Grant-I hope that they tone her down a bit going forward. I don't hate her, but she was the weak link of the group here.

-How they're handling Superman and his absence seems, weird to me. We'll see how it goes, but they need a better explanation for why he's not around.

-Some of the dialogue was clunky.

All in all, I'd give it a B, maybe a B+.

Yeah she does look :super:exy as Supergirl, but lovable as Kara. She is my first ever TV crush.

Chyler Leigh was great. Jeremy Jordan added some comedy as did Mechad Brooks. Those two will i think increase their humor a bit.

-The action/effects were quite good.

Like that of a major motion picture!

Holy Steve Harvey! Astra v Kara will make family feud look like a picnic!

She was campy and I hope the only source of camp for this show. Perhaps when we meet her son she may tone down things. Although judging from the season preview trailer including a scene where Kara blows up at Cat, that may be wishful thinking! Basically she is the female Perry White, but not as lovable as John Hamilton or Lane Smith (may they RIP) on TV or Jackie Cooper in the Reeve films.

-How they're handling Superman and his absence seems, weird to me. We'll see how it goes, but they need a better explanation for why he's not around.

Perhaps legal issues

-Some of the dialogue was clunky.

It was a pilot after all.

Perhaps legal issues

Nope. The decision to treat Superman as they have is creative, and it wasn't actually even their intention to only have his name mentioned twice (one by Kara in her opening narration and once, offhandedly, by Cat) in the entirety of the episode, since they did film other scenes where the name got mentioned directly that ended up being cut from the final product (thank you Andrew Kreisberg).

13M is about the average for NCIS: New Orleans (another hit show on CBS).

We'll have to see what's the drop % next week.

I'm not sure that it will have much of a drop...for many people like myself, NEXT WEEK is our premiere. Having seen the pilot back in May as did many and then many at the comic cons next week is our first NEW LOOK, so to speak.

They tried doing too much in the pilot, which made it feel rushed and clunky. there are definitely things that need fixing, but there is also a lot of good which can be built on. melissa benoist really did save the episode. she's fantastic in the role of supergirl. everything else was pretty cookie cutter. I can imagine young girls falling in love with her and being inspired by the show. and I can see many young boys being opened up to the concept of respectable female heroes. both of which would be amazing feats for the show to accomplish.

It's not real good, but it has a lot of potential. The writing is very straightforward and generic so far. The pacing is intense, and some of the moments feel very rushed through. Some of it worked well, though, and gave the show a real sense of energy and fun. Some of the emotion is very genuine, and some of it is forced. They need to find a better balance between a serious take on the material and colorful cheese.

Melissa Benoist is fantastic for the role. The "feel good" angle, and the "joy" Kara shows is very refreshing, and palpable, in flight, while saving people...that stuff alone will make this show worth watching even if its just solid. If they dwelled a bit more on her conflict, it would work better. I think they've set up some decent struggles. She's naive and inexperienced without being naive and useless, which is nice.

The story concepts being set up certainly have potential. They're blowing things up early with the idea of Kryptonian villains, etc.

Action and effects were quite good for television, and tended to look fairly decent.

A lot of people seem to dislike Calista Flockhart, but I think she was spot on performancewise given the detached, on-her-own-planet Cat Grant they're going for. Liked the "feminist" conversation the show is introducing. Enjoyed Kara's circle of friends, and love that she's so trusting about her secret identity. I like Brooks as Jimmy Olsen so far. He's not as stereotypically "tough guy" as I expected, which is a nice surprise. Not a fan of Alex or anyone from the DEO. Suspect acting all around there, hoping that's an editing/dialogue thing. Villains are pretty cardboard, but they seem to just be fodder. There are probably better formed ones to come.

Definitely some potential, here's hoping it improves.

Settled for a 3.1 in the finals.
It is tied with Blindspot for best season premiere.

I liked it, and I liked that it was the anti-Smallville in it had her flying and saving people right off the bat and in the suit not long after. But some of the effects and fight choreography needs work. Sometimes when a character is thrown or punched into the air, it looks unnatural when they crash into buildings or brick walls or hit the ground.

I think you are going to be happily surprised in future episodes.

I liked the pilot. Melissa was great in the role. I liked that right away they embraced the superhero aspect and didn't have the boring and clichéd trope of her in denial of her powers.

Her cape is now indestructible but what about the rest of her costume? Does it still get sliced with an axe? Or if she were in a huge explosion, would her costume get burnt off leaving her wrapped in nothing but her cape?

Mechad Brooks could've made a decent Luke Cage if he had been a little older. Or he still could've worked at his current age.

Was the aunt played by the same actress as the mother?

So Alura had a twin sister? Was this ever the case in the comics?

There were a few scenes where Melissa acts a bit like Grant Gustin.

So I finally saw it! Talk about five months late, after having the pilot so long until you actually watched it, huh? LOL. So, my thoughts? I enjoyed it.

Sure, as a pilot, it has the feeling of a work in progress that would be improved with future episodes, but as it stands, it's not bad nor it is great: it's a good pilot on Supergirl, and a start of a new series.

Comparing it to what little I saw of Flash, Gotham, or even our previous Superman show, Smallville (let's avoid any criticisms over if that was a true Superman show or not, please), this was lighter by comparison. I guess that is the direction they wanted to go, after all there wasn't anything stopping them from being edgy or anything like that, like with other DC shows or movies. But if you think about it, it's premise is designed so it not edgy at all: it is lighthearted, and while its target audience is young audiences, it also works for younger audiences as well. The action sequences had the energy I need to dance with, along the music. The effects were also high quality; I heard people saying there were problems, but never saw them. Supergirl was great, James was well written, everyone was fine; I also didn't have a problem with Cat, tbh. How she is, isn't because of the actress, it's suppose to be because that's who she is.

Was there anything I hated or even nitpicked? I had a couple, 2-3 actually. Kara's narration wasn't needed, at least for the pilot; the next episodes to recap "who she is and how she came to be" is necessary for the narration to be used, but here, we saw what she was saying, or they could've not have it at all. Some of the line deliveries felt corny, I doubt it was the lines themselves though. Finally, I guess the other thing is the lightheartedness. Don't get me wrong, no issues having that for the show or its direction; but, I feel if you want us to believe these threats, especially the ones coming soon, you gotta be serious with them. I feel that will b the show anyway, after all that's what it will do, "grow up". But I wonder if the shows needs to be that way sooner, than later.

Okay, so let's talk about Superman:
First of all, I had to giggle when Kara complained over the damage criticism she got after her first night, making me think of MOS.

Secondly: I was thinking of something I had thought of before, and it was Superman's costume based on what very little we saw of him. Judging from the fabric, his suit must be exactly like Supergirl's: not just the "S" of course, maybe with the yellow added in, but I believe it's the same fabric as well. Look at his sleeve, it's just Supergirl's outfit. Why am I bringing this up? Well, perhaps out fanartists can, or have already done so, made a possible Superman costume based on what he could look like on the show. Just no trunks; it's not like they would change that for this show, but also, it's done guys, move on.

What I wanted to bring up was when he would show up, or heck, what is he doing now? We'll know in the next episodes, sure; but, I still speculate, especially if the threats Supergirl will face would be too big for even him to ignore. Perhaps he's off planet, perhaps he's watching her and will join her if it gets too serious. Just to get it out of the way, the rumor that he is dead is false; not only were they talking about his past to compare with Kara's, but the bullseye that killed that rumor, was when James said he promised Superman to look after Kara when he moved. So while that question is up in the air, there is the obvious one remaining: when will we see him? If I had to wager a guess, I think we will see him....in the season finale. Maybe there will be an exception, like the mid season finale, but I doubt they'll end the season without him working with Kara to stop the threat. Maybe by that time, it'll be Superman and Supergirl versus the Zoners and Cyborg Superman in an epic fight. That'll be awesome.

Actually, wait: what if he is off planet, but he is captured by...Zod?!

So all in all, Supergirl is on my to watch list. Now to make sure I watch each episode, instead of delaying it to insanity, lol.

No, Allura never had a twin sister in the comics.

I thought Benoist was fantastic, and loved her. I didn't want to watch the leak, so this was my first viewing. Not sure how I feel about super suave Jimmy, though. Oh well, I am looking forward to future episodes. There are many things I could add but most of it has been covered already.

No, Allura never had a twin sister in the comics.

Alura doesn't have ANY siblings in the comics, so Astra is a completely original character.

Speaking of original characters, Berlanti and Co. continue to impress and amaze me with the amount of such characters they've created between Arrow, The Flash, and now Supergirl thus far (it's up to at least a dozen).

Is the pilot showing again at all this week?

I don't know what time, but I do believe it's being re-broadcast on CBS, yes.

I liked it I already saw the leaked one but seeing it on TV was much better. I agree with what you all say about Melissa she knocked it out of the park, her and Helen are the 2 best Supergirls out there period. I even like how they have Helen play her mom and Dean Cain as her dad too.

It was a good start. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I found a few things quirky about the pilot. One being that Kara makes a comment to Winn that "Aliens don't exist" yet the entire world knows Superman exists, and that he is a visitor from another planet.

Also, the comment Kara's sis made about "your alien DNA won't let you get pimples" or something along those lines. And a later scene where we see Kara heal almost instantly when fragments from Lumberjack's axe are removed from her arm, yet Melissa Benoist has a clearly visible scar on her eyebrow. Seems like some makeup could have fixed that minor gaffe.

Those were the two biggest complaints. Not feeling the character of Cat Grant. But she is a tertiary character.

All in all, it was a fun but somewhat rushed initial foray into the mythos of Supergirl. I hope the program continues to trend upwards. It seems out of place on CBS. It definitely feels like it should be part of the Flash and Arrow shared universe. More-so The Flash. But I understand not wanting to muddy those waters, and allowing the character to find her way on her own without the dependency of other established programs.
