Secret Wars to return next year.

They are combining Ultimate and 616....why? How is that even relevant today in 2015? Who cares about Ultimate anyway?
yes. it's not just Ultimate tho.

they keep mentioning Ultimate, but the scope of it sounds much more like they are wanting to pick characters from all different universes, and all thru the histories of those universes. saying this becuz of the different little pieces of reality that have already been announced as taking part in Battleworld. so not just Ultimate.

so we might see a 19 year old Cyclops and Marvel Girl Jean, with a pre-Stryker Logan, with a Storm who is Queen of Wakanda in a world with futuristic evil Beast, Archangel, weirdwizard Bobby, and Dark Phoenix Jean... just as a random example of X-Men characters.

we might see Ultimate Peter Parker, Miles Morales, older Peter who is married to MJ, Spider-Gwen, and Superior Spider-Man all coexisting.

lots of combinations we can imagine.
and these characters, it sounds like to me, will be keeping their individual continuities. one of the mysteries right now is... how is that gonna work, exactly? and that is probably something that is part of what the Secret Wars will reveal to us.

"If you're an 'Amazing Spider-Man' reader, this is going to be your book," Alonso said, pointing to the teaser of a married Peter Parker and Mary Jane with a child.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58625

And if what Alonso is saying is to be taken at face value, and that this really is an indication that Marvel is going to use Secret Wars to actually undo One More Day, and give Peter and MJ and kid to boot, then I find it absolutely hysterical that, after eight years of Marvel telling us how necessary One More Day was for the future of Spider-Man as a viable comic book franchise, of Tom Brevoort saying stuff like this:

...take this from somebody who was there as a reader and watched it happen, the marriage of Peter and MJ was absolutely as forced and sudden, probably more so. It’s just had the advantage of having been a status quo for so long that a lot of readers grew up with it and accepted it. We’ve never said that no characters should be married, the point is that Spider-Man, the most popular youth-based character in the entertainment world, probably shouldn’t be married.”

and Joe Quesada saying stuff like this:

What really made Spidey unique wasn't so much his powers or his costume, sure those were cool things, but what really made him unique was that it was about the guy inside the costume and the soap opera that was his life. Peter could have had a whole different set of powers and it still would have been a ground breaking comic because in the end, that's not what made Spider-Man stories different. So, with every little bit of the trappings of his life that got chipped away, more and more of the soap opera dwindled.

When Peter Parker got married, it caused the character to be cut off from many of the social situations and settings that put him at conflict with his family, friends, and especially the girl he was dating. Suddenly, something as simple as the tension he had with Felicia Hardy was completely defused; if Peter ever gave in to temptation or even considered it, he would be, in the eyes of the fans, the lousiest guy in the world. It became harder to place Peter in situations where he could hang out with other single characters, without him seeming like the oldest person in the room, even if he wasn't. And whatever nerdish sex appeal he possessed, we had to tread very carefully. He became the perpetual "designated driver." Sure, Peter could hang around with other married folk -- I bet that would be exciting!

Let me try to put this as plainly as I can, and let's be really honest here, let's really look at marriage for a second. I'll get personal, for a moment. I have an incredible marriage and a fantastic kid, but there is no question that my life was much more story-worthy when I was single. Was I happier? Absolutely not. Was my life a better story from a drama sense? Ummmm, yeah. It had many more twists and turns and theater and was a bit of a mess. Now let me say, not everyone, but for most: When people get married, they tend to settle down -- life slows down and you gain different responsibilities, grown-up responsibilities, boring responsibilities. You go out to dinner less, see fewer movies, your social life is curtailed and revolves, as it should, around your significant other. In short, life hands you a mini van. While marriage makes for an okay story, there is less drama in a (healthy) marriage than in a single relationship. That's one of the many reason we get married -- we want stability, we want comfort, we want kids, etc., etc. No one gets married because they want more drama in their life. What's good for one's life doesn't always make for great stories when the heart of your character's universe is drama. From a writer and artist's point of view, the people who are creating the stories, it's like giving Daredevil his eyesight back. It works for a short time and eventually erodes at the foundation of the character and what makes them unique. We all want Peter to catch a break and to settle down and have happiness in his life, but that isn't really what we want. If that actually happened, people would stop caring about Spider-Man.

Bottom line, there are so many things that twentysomethings are doing with their lives that a married Peter can't. He needs to be a single guy. Sure, he can have a girlfriend -- that adds something to his story -- but a married Peter just cuts off too many avenues for good soap opera. Could you have soap opera within a marriage? Sure. But after a while, there's only so much tension you can bring into Peter and MJ's marriage before you make him seem like a louse of a husband, or her, like a bickering wife. In contrast, you can only play them as a happy-go-lucky couple for so long -- that adds up to zero tension within the relationship and takes away a crucial element of Spider-Man stories: the soap opera.

...that Marvel, after all of this, essentially goes, "Um...yeah, about that whole deal with Mephisto to erase Peter and MJ's marriage. Guess we really did screw-up on that one, huh?"

Of course, if this is a return of a married Peter, then I wouldn't be surprised if, seeing how the Ultimate is being merged with the 616, if this is also a way for Miles Morales to be groomed as the more prominent Spider-Man with Peter acting as a mentor.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to how this ends up. The Marvel Universe is so convoluted and messed up now that I'm all for rebooting it a bit.

Mostly I want the X-Men to be a close knit family again. No more of this hating Cyclops and schism or any of that terrible stuff.

It's been hard keeping track of so many titles and catching up especially when all I do is work. I'm intrigued by Battleworld and the whole concept of this and i'll pass full judgement when it all starts but colour me excited! I can see the reasoning behind it, if i'm understanding correctly. To myself the whole Marvel NOW is a mess. There's too much going on and simplifying it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Also, this could be the perfect opportunity to fix some things about Spider-Man. Bring Miles over, which honestly is the best thing about the Ultimate Universe. Fix Peter's marriage. Permanently bring over Mayday and Benjy.

Then you have Peter married again with kids and you also have a young single Spider-Man. Have Pete do his thing and play mentor to Miles.

It's kind of perfect actually.

I'm kind of surprised that there has been no paranoid X-fans going off about how this is Marvels way of getting rid of X-men from the comics (which is silly).

As an X-fan, I'm more worried they're going to just leave the All-new O5 with Kitty and a couple others, and whittle down the mutant population to extremely low levels.
With all the attention they give to the O5 these days, plus Alonso's ***** for anything written by Bendis, I fear an even higher profile for the least interesting group of X-men.

That's what I've seen people suspect as well. If you buy their claim that MJ and the marriage had to go because people supposedly wanted a hip, young, relatable Spider-Man, then bringing in Miles while having Peter as a married mentor figure allows them to do that while not wiping their ass with Mary Jane.

the few X fans that are left? Outside of Bendis' 2 books, the X titles dont sell that well anymore. Marvel has been crapping on the line for quite some time and have driven many away. Im looking at this like whatever. I already stopped reading Marvel outside of Uncanny and ANX and even those I havent touched in months

There is very good chance following could happen at conclusion of secret wars

1:End of X-men and mutants
2:Inhumans will offically replace mutants
3:End of FF
4:Erasing of white Nick fury
5:Spider-man will be miles morales version. That will be marvel's loophole to use spider-man in films claim sony only has rights to peter parker version. They can use morales version.

Marvel will get rid of things that don't fit their films and TV.They already killed off wolverine, may also be killing off deadpool, and this may be final blow to X-Men and
mutants. They have been craping on X-Men for quite some time.

X-men was always my s***
F' Marvel if they really do this
Haven't read any comics in months cuz they all suck.. guess that's not changing

The Marvel Universe I grew up with died back in 2003. It's so apparent now. I'm so far behind on stuff right now, I find myself not even caring anymore. This news is not helping things.

Wow, it sounds like marvel is terrible by what everyone is saying here yet they're still the best selling comic company in the world. They gotta be doing something right

Out of the few comic fans left, yes the X-books still represent a significant number of sales. If Disney was interested in subsidizing failing businesses, Lucasarts would still be around.

That's not how film rights work. They wouldn't get the rights to Miles since Miles is still a derivative character of the Spider-Man franchise. The Fox movies have already been using characters who were created after Marvel initially sold the rights (such as Ink, Darwin, Angel Savadore and Azazel) so that almost certainly applies to the Sony too.

Just because Miles was created after Sony bought the rights doesn't mean that Marvel owns him.

Aren't many of the jerk Ultimate heroes dead anyway?

Combining all these different alternate universes might make Marvel comics even more confusing for new readers if they do it in a haphazard way.

They should of just brought Ultimate Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the 616 and replaced the Ultimate comic line with a movie comic universe.

They'll always make money. What they are not doing right is alienating long time fans.

They wanna reboot all the crap that's happened over the past few years obviously. A lot of them have acted out of character.

So has Fox. :hehe:

This sounds like a cool event. I wouldn't worry about reboots or any crap like that, things may change for awhile but the status quo will always return. Back when the Ultimate line was originally announced people were pissing their pants thinking Marvel was replacing 616 and it didn't happen. This will be the same.

They'll probably just want to streamline it. If a kid goes to the cinema and watches a Thor film. He then goes to the comic store and picks up a Thor comic, there will have to be a resemblance between the 2 characters otherwise the kid might just walk out without buying anything. The stories wont match up but at least he'd be recognisable as the same character.

Yep but he's not in the 616, so we need another one. Maybe they'll have a fight to the death when they meet and the original Fury will blow them both up.

No! Shoot him! I'm the real Nick Fury.

*Nick Fury walks in and guns everyone down* Shaddup.

I think that is down to their short term vision 'events driven' business model.

Marvel always gives the marketing promotion hard sell about each event 'changing everything' but it feels like they are just changing things for the hell of of it rather than because there is some narrative value in it or to keep things fresh. A grand marketing gimmick.

The superhero infighting has gone a bit overboard as well. Civil War, Schism, AvX, Time runs out Illuminate stuff, ect. One of the heroes usually ends up portrayed as a villain to justify the fighting.
