I am listening to the Chris Baker show in Houston. Its talk radio.

They are talking about the FEMA checks that people were using to buy porn, beer and anything other than what they were suppossed to be used.

A gentleman called up a few minutes ago. He has been here since Katrina. He is still living in an apartmet completely subsidized by FEMA. He told Chris on the show, he has done absolutely NOTHING while here. He blatantly said on the radio, he lives in a cess pool in New Orleans and basically was treating this like a god-send vacation for him since the area he lived in was so bad.

Chris asked him, have you tried to get a job?

The guy responded, I have looked a little and cant find anything.

ARG! This pisses me off. I am pretty damn sure if he looked hard enough he can get something...When you are hurting for cash, get a freaking garbage job. I would, my pride is not above it.

What I am tired of, are these guys, like this, who have milked this government funding for a year, and have done NOTHING. He could have gotten a minimum wage job, while not having to pay for his housing and could have had a nice little nestegg for himself by the time the subsidizing of the apartment was over.

ARG, I dont freaking work 50-60 hours a week (sometimes more) so some damn lazy bastard can milk MY money so he can sit on his lice ridden couch and complain that he gets nothing.

I am almost getting to a heartless atttitude in this fashion. Cut all funds, cut the cord. I could get even nastier, but it would not be appropriate.

Unfortunatley that's all part of the 'Welfare Culture" we have here. People think they're entitled to things and dont want to work for it. There's no sense of pride or self-respect. If they can suck the government's teet, they have no incentive to make it on their own.

I dont see how these people can just sit about all day doing nothing! i would be so bored. Ask to be paid cash in hand Malice ;) Go off the grid haha:D

blame extreme libralism and the entitlement culture that it ahs wrought...then blame the Administration for not checking out FEMA claims to make sure people weren't screwing the system.

Not to sound like the devil's advoacate here but maybe FEMA rushed the checks out so no one would have to wait. Let's say FEMA did extensive background checks on everybody. Then the big news story would be "Katrina survivors still wait for relief checks". I think FEMA screwed the pooch big time on this, but it looks to me like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Oh very true...if they HAD done the checks then people would B***H about timing, and now because they sped them out, people are B***hing about screw ups.

Fledermaus,
you are right..

But I believe they could probably do something like the Texas Lone Star Card or the WIC cards. Where the cards were only good for generic groceries and help with some rent. Not for porn or LASEC surgery.

I am sorry, I think only they need the basics. Food, Shelter and Clothing.
That is it.

The cards should do only that.

They would have been yelled out for not being there immediately or be yelled at for taking a day or two to check things out. FEMA is there to help you SURVIVE, not prosper.

ARG...just heard another moron on the show thinking thast 2000 is not enough.
ARG!

*looks for his bat*

As long as there is welfare of any kind, there will be people who figure out how to abuse the system. They didn't exactly make it difficult for people to abuse, however; no restrictions on what may be purchased, no requirements for people receiving aid to find work and start generating an income again, no time limits, etc. And then they wonder why people are taking advantage of it.

When I worked at the adult store in Pasadena, there was this panhandler who hovered around the shop, and begged for money because he lost the toes on one foot to diabetes.

Then he would take his change cup and rent porn dvds.

Which meant

A. He had a place to live with electricity.
B. He had a dvd player.
C. He had a credit card because it was required to rent.
D. He had enough money that he could afford to waste it on porn!

When he stood outside our store, we stuck a sign in the window pointing to him that said "Don't give him change, he buys porn with it."
