Seriously, Is Harry Potter Literature?

You're averaging about 15 threads a month... stop.

Well, when compared to that Shakespeare drivel (which in my opinion is quite overhyped), and countless other "classics" such as Canterbury Tales and the like, yes, Harry Potter is literature. Why? Simple: Because it actually tells an interesting story.

But we must ask: How can crap like Eragon make billions of dollars? That my friend, is truly not good writing.

^I agree. It's the gimmick of having been written by a dopey kid.

the english class in my school used it for coursework- they were 17 at the time! its on the reading list so it must have something

I'll give the series this: the first one was actually good. I found myself going through my assignments quicker to read it. Eldest however, was slow, ponderous, and I had to force myself to read it.

Oh my God that was clever.

In all seriousness though, yes it is literature - its a great series and you are just an idiot.

yeah i hate those dumbass classes. the harry potter books were out long before the films. yet our schools did'nt use them as books to read, but now that its overhyped its cool to use it as literature. where the **** are comics in literature classes?

GoldenAgeHero, HP could be used over comics due to the fact that there is probably a bit more depth to the novels, eh?

I know that^. I was trying to point it out to GoldenAgeHero.

I'm teaching a comic book class next year as a combination literature/art class for 7th-9th graders here at school. It is going to RULE!!!!!!

The Watchman
V for Vendetta
Transmopolitan
Planetary
Kingdom Come
Preacher
Marvels

All of those books have depth and are considered literature masterpieces in the comics industry. its obvious that you don't read comics but whatever.

The Hype would be a better place if we posted our every random thought, in a brand new thread.

Not true. I had the first 15 issues of Spawn when I was a wee lad. Now I'm into Hellboy.

You should really read "A Hero's Journey" by Joseph Cambell, and also "A Writer's Journey" by Christopher Vogler.

These books outline a fascinating common structure as to what makes stories about heroes, villains, quests, etc so enjoyable and as to why they ARE an important form of literature!

Especially including Harry Potter.

EXCELLENT reads.
