Which city will be attacked by flying sharks next? New York City! Following the worldwide social media frenzy around the July 11 premiere of Sharknado, Syfy today announced it will produce – Sharknado 2!

Sharknado 2 (working title), which will again be produced by The Asylum, is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in 2014.

Syfy also announced a special Twitter contest to help name the movie with an appropriate subtitle. Fans will be able to tweet their subtitle to @SyfyMovies using #Sharknado. Syfy will select the best submission as the subtitle for Sharknado 2.

In making the announcement, Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President, Programming and Original Movies, Syfy, said: “Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that 'Sharknado 2' will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”

In Sharknado, regulars of a beachside bar including owner Fin (Ian Ziering), bartender Nova (Cassie Scerbo) and local drunk George (John Heard/Home Alone) team up with Fin’s ex-wife April (Tara Reid) to investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies.

I found the twitter hype over this annoying. These Syfy saturday night movies are so dime-a-dozen, what makes Sharknado so special?

This one takes place in New York. Sharknado's hype comes from the absurdity of it which is beyond anything they've managed to do before. Quite a feat when you realize just how absurd some of their past movies were.

"Sharknado 2" Set To Bite On July 31st

Syfy have announced a Thursday July 31st premiere date for "Sharknado 2: The Second One". The follow-up comes a little over a year after the original film aired.
Ian Ziering and Tara Reid reprise their roles as Fin and April in the follow-up in which a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a "sharknado" on the city's population and its most iconic sites.
Perez Hilton, Robert Klein, Biz Markie, Pepa from Salt-N-Pepa, and wrestler/Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle have all joined the cast of the telemovie which includes the already announced Vivica A. Fox, Mark McGrath, Kelly Osbourne, Judd Hirsch, Andy Dick and Judah Friedlander.
Anthony C. Ferrante will return to direct the sequel from a screenplay by Thunder Levin. Production is now underway.

The first one didn't live up to the hype. It was just another crappy syfy film

Haha, the s ****ing thing is awesome. The weather report featuring "shark fronts" killed me.

I forgot this was today. I just got home and watching the replay. Love the casting so far.

OMG the Jared from Subway cameo, and the Today Show segment! This is pretty great.

Who saw it? C'Mon! This movie deserves two fins up!!

I just watched it with my mom... So bad, it's bad... But kinda good. Freaking Matt Lauer and Al Roker are the MVP's of this thing though. They just committed to this in a way that the actors of the fictional characters kind of didn't. Also, despite the plastic surgery, I would take Vivica Fox over Reid any day of the week

Was Kari Wuher the woman that got attacked by the shark on the Staten Island Ferry? And who was the actress that played the woman that got smashed by the whale shark while riding the Citi Bike? And that brings me to that part. It's actually kinda true now... If you have a debit/credit card then the next alien invasion, natural disaster, super villain rampage you have no excuse to be hoofing it around NYC. Get a Citi Bike, fleeing masses in Manhattan.

Not a big fan of these intentionaly bad movies, there's a charm in those that are genuinely trying to make a good movie but fail, that's lacking in films that are being bad on purpose.

Yeah, I find that a lot of times, "so bad it's good" is code for "We can make money on our movie without putting any effort in". Making a crappy movie and telling people you did it on purpose doesn't make you clever, it just makes you a lazy jerk.

Though on the flip side, you'll still get bashed if you put effort into a movie and it's viewed as bad, so may as well make the preemptive strike.

C'mon, Richard Kind hitting a shark home run was hilarious. I was sad at how minor Will Wheaton's cameo was.

This Saturday get ready for the premier of Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda. :awesome:

Sharktopus was another one I enjoyed, so I'm looking forward to this one.
