I remember a TV movie a few years ago, a Cinderella adaptation with Brandy. Prince Charming was Asian and his mom was Woopi Goldberg. The race had nothing to do at all with good storytelling. I'm hoping someday movies will be like that with "so and so is supposed to be white" blah.

Get over it! The race doesn't matter. The storyline does.

I believe I gave unique reasons why Cena would make a descent Cap despite limited acting range (other than build)... great reversal otherwise.

I would actually take Vin Disel as Luke Cage, simply because he can pass for black, which is kinda a defining aspect of the character. Unlike Kingpin. You couldn't really make a case with, say, Jason Statham... at least not to me.

Now, you are correct, that the same principal (racial identification with favorite characters) applies to blacks as well, no doubt. Often moreso, since many black fans feel as though good black characters are a rarity, or 'endangered species.' While one can point out ten great black characters, a black person mentally counts hundreds of white ones, and when one character "defects" it's a lot more offensive.

Again, for me, the issue is never what race the actor is, but whether they can pass for a certain race. If an African man look white, let him play Superman, or Hitler, or whoever he can look like, his DNA is irrelevant.

Really, everyone keeps saying that the rock would be a great Black Adam but I just simply don’t see how. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to take him seriously as a villain.

The reason I see him as Captain Marvel is because, having seen him in The Rundown and Be cool, he’s demonstrated that when he’s not trying to play the typical archetypical Badass we’re all familiar with, he actually has genuine charm and a surprisingly good sense of comedic timing. I think he'd be great at capturing the innocence and lightheartedness of the character.

Just FYI, I’m white. As you know, I’m also rooting for John Stewart to get his shot at movie stardom. I don’t doubt your experiences, but generalizations on race are never a good direction to go in an argument.

Haha. White people don't like it when their white characters are portrayed by non-whites... it takes away part of what helps them identify with the character. Even as a non-white myself, I'm not THAT pressed, but The Rock can't really pass for white, and Captain Marvel is supposed to be a little white boy that grows into a big white man. That kinda small town bumpkinness is thrown off when you add in non-whiteness.

That said, the Rock would OWN as Black Adam, and I think he'd enjoy the role quite a bit.

Now, with Captain Marvel not being a thoroughly deep character, I think John Cena can actually pull it off. I've seen the Marine, and let me tell you, his acting skill isn't that deep, but Captain Marvel doesn't require much acting skill, it requires a big build, a big smile and a square jaw, and some stunt work... Cena can do that, honestly. I'd enjoy seeing him as the big red cheese...

"Captain Marvel" isn't about Cap... it's about Billy. It's important to get a skilled child actor for Billy (not to be confused with a teenage actor), but Cap is a big cheesy superhero, and honestly, based on the Marine and his wrestling performances, John Cena can do that in his sleep.

The Captain is the creation of a child's imagination, created by magic.
The power to be a superhero given to a kid who was an orphan, basically one step from living on the streets. This made him a bit more aware of the world, wiser in dealing with people and things in general. He wasn't a simpleton or just a dreamer. He was smart, a surviver, and knew the difference between right and wrong.
His skin color was irrelevant, but at that time, everything was very WASPC-centric.
Today, his race would be, for those reasons, even more irrelevant.
But if you want a broader appeal, worldwide, and keep to the traditional Amercan values that say anyone can succeed and be someone in this society, irregardless of your background, then Billy Batson could be a young man of color, whether, Hispanic, Samoan, Indian, Asian, Italian or Greek or any other ethnic background that gives someone a skin tone other than light beige or pink.
It's about the Power of Hope.

Honestly, my ONLY problem with The Rock as Cap is that if he's Cap, who's Black Adam? Arnold Vosloo just aint big enough. You need someone just as big as Cap to play Black Adam.

If you cast The Rock as Adam and Warburton as Cap, then you're set. John Cena would also be the right size, but he's a terrible actor. Warburton and Rock are perfect for Captain Marvel and Black Adam.
