In today's NY Daily News, it's reported that director Peter Segal wants Jake Gyllenhaal for the role. Don't know if this is new news or not, but I thought i'd post it anyway.

Based on the DC comic, the movie is New Line's bid for a franchise on the order of "Batman" and "Superman." "They're ready to spend up to $200 million to get it started," an insider tells us. Sources say director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to nab Gyllenhaal before "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi does - with "Spider-Man 3" due to open on May 4, star Tobey Maguire has said he may let someone else play the web slinger.

This tabloid really have no shame. I strongly doubt the budget for a Captain Marvel movie will be more than 75 million.

I hope the Gyllenhaal rumor turns out to be true, lord knows he's overdo for a Superhero Role. Not that he's necessarily the best for the role, but I think this would be one of those "could be very good or very bad" kind of casting decisions, sort of like Ledger as Joker.

And good god, would I never be more happy to be wrong about anything in my life! (in reference to the Adam Sandler thing)

Spider-Man's already had a good run. Why not let him start fresh with a series of his own? Like I've said before, it's about time he got something. He was already in the running for Superman, Batman and now Spider-Man AND Captain Marvel? I'd say he deserves it.

People are already disliking the idea and I bet this will end up sinking his career as a somewhat good actor. "One of the silliest comic book characters"? LOL. This movie might end up bombing.
