It's a common practice, hire a cheap director for most comic based movies.
Whats this about? I'm kind of curious, might check it out.
ETA anyone?
He would be great if he were 15 to 20 years younger like in his Evil Dead era.
The name of the Movie should just be SHAZAM!
This should be a kid-friendly movie like a cross between "The Incredibles" and "Big". Director Peter Segal has a good handle on the character.
"It is a 13-year-old boy who becomes a superhero, and I think there is an element of BIG in that and I think there always was in the comic book. Theres a sense of humor and humanity. So that would be the common theme. I think if you look at Peter Parker, theres a great sense of humor he has. Hes a young boy, learning his powers. Theres so many wonderful opportunities we have in exploring not just a 13-year-old experiencing being inside the body of a superhero, but also all the emotions that go with that." - Peter Segal.
Brandon Molale is perfect for the Captain Marvel role!

As we all know, The Rock has been cast as Black Adam.
"Dwayne (The Rock) was great to work with (in GET SMART), We really did have a great time. So we were looking for something else to do together. He said, What are you working on? And I told him Shazam!. And he said, Do you think I can read a draft when youre ready? And I said, Yeah. John August is writing it and then we went on strike, so I dont have a draft to show him yet. But I just started telling him the story and I thought that he might be a great Black Adam. And whats fascinating now is even though the comic book was created and born in 1939 with Captain Marvel as the star, today Geoff Johns has made (Black Adam) one of the preeminent bad guys in several comics. And so that puts even more pressure on Dwayne (The Rock) for that role, in a good way. - Peter Segal.
Hopefully The Rock will play the character seriously, not just camp it up for the kids. "Its going to have a serious tone with moments of humor and I think itll be somewhere in between Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. - Peter Segal. Seems like Peter Segal, has the right handle on Cap and his cast.

Looks like a good Shazam movie.
Ian McKellan is perfect for the wizard Shazam. That's a no brainier.

But who should be cast as Billy? It has to be a likable kid, not an obnoxious sarcastic brat. Not a "cool" kid. Billy is kind of a good hearted geeky kid. A 13-year-old Peter Parker type kid.
t:Oh my goooooooood! You know I joke about this before in several threads that people would start suggesting Ian McKellen for Shazam, but I didn't think anyone would seriously do it! The only reason you've even considered him is because he already played a wizard in Lord of the Rings. He's not going to play the same role again! Don't tell me your backup choices are Christopher Lee and Michael Gambon! There are PLENTY of awesome 60+ actors that could play this role. No need to retread the same ground.

While I like Brendon Molale, I'd really like to see some fresh talent for Shazam. Though, Shazam is the main character, and he has to have box-office draw, I suppose.
I'm waiting for the fanboys to gripe about this not being "dark" enough.
QFT!For real. Or complain that Black Adam isn't tearing peoples intenstines out like in a Geoff Johns book since that guy can't get through any story without resorting to cheap, gratutious on-camera gore.
A Captain Marvel movie should be the kind of thing that has right balance of action, adventure, drama, and humor that wether your a fan or a family you would come out of the movie theatre cheering. Moreso than any other superhero movie, this one needs to be magic.
