shooter on the va tech campus

Maybe I'm wrong for saying this, but I think the guy was just nuts. I mean being an outcast and depressed is one thing (we can all identify with that), but how do you explain stalking girls on campus?

but we don't live in a world where things are black and white.

I'm not saying that...there is plenty of grey...but there was celarly nothing but malice in this guys actions. He sought to do nothing but cause mindless death and undiscriminantly destroy the lives of many promising students to me that is pure evil.

I think if one of our close friends or relatives pulled a stunt like this, we'd be more apt to see the gray areas. Somebody you've never met is easy to hate, but a close person you've known for years going off the deep end is a whole other thing.

Guy doesn't deserve pity, he deserves to be stuck in a jail cell raped by a large man for the rest of his days. Too bad he took the cowards way out.

When has someone that's gone on a killing spree not committed suicide? I do understand that we call these guys cowards in order to feel justified about not getting veageance, but they knew what they were going to do way beforehand, including killing themselves and taking out people. They never planned on facing the music.

i think he has suffered enoguh... I hate how christians want everyone to suffer in hell....but hey thats part of the mythology :o

It's not just Christians, Jews, and Muslims also believe in hell for the people who deserve it (ie NOT everyone)...like Hitler, Stalin, and child murderers, and quite likely this guy...

So the thing that always bugged me (and yes I realize I have been judging this guy, and I do feel badly for it, but it's just how I feel) is why guys like this couldn't just turn the gun on themselves form the get go? Why do they feel they need to shatter innocent lives before they go?? :csad:

I reiterate, misery loves company. If I have to suffer, I'm taking some mother****ers with me.

Also, if you're a loner in college isn't that something that you put on yourself? I mean, in high school it's understandable, but that usually changes when you get to college. If you're the same way in college I think you're just not trying to get to know people.

I think there are some people just not cut out for life.

if he didn't kill anyone else but himself, i would feel sorry...but since he killed people he probably never even talked to, no i don't.

i've been abused in my child hood, i've had a pretty lonely life, i don't get much attention from girls but i don't need counceling nor do i feel the need to make other people suffer for my inability to be social. this dude deserved pity before Monday...but he deserves it no more.

but we don't live in a world where things are black and white.

True, in the sense that the world is not actually black and white... However, as a society, Americans do in fact limit things to black and white all the time. It's our nature... "My way or the highway."

I think it's rather sad that people are going to start profiling Asians. Do we profile white people, seeing as serial killers are usually white males?

Plus the idiocy of those who are going to harass Asians, who can't discern between the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Indonesians, etc. People in the UK, don't like to be grouped together, Scottish, Irish, English, Welsh etc. Neither do Asians.

While I completely agree with this, you'll see the same thing everywhere. I lived in England for years, and every time I'd go into a British store, the clerk would leave his desk and hang out down the aisle from where my friends and I were, simply because we opened our mouths [assuming we were going to steal stuff]. I'm sure in China, they discriminate against blacks, whites, other asians, etc.

Well put DF...and here's teh other thing...you may experience those things, but in our dealing on this board you seem to be making attempts to rise above the crap and be a decent guy (plus if you aren't in college yet, you're in for a whole new world of social opportunities and acceptance...but that's for another thread)...this guy chose to wallow in his own loathing, self-pity, and angst and thus turned out as he did...

His roomates this year invited him out with their friends to eat and he would show up and would only give one word answers on where he was from and what classes he was taking. Eventually he stopped coming. They tried to get him out of his shell but he got off by stalking girls from online or making prank calls under the name The Questionmark. He went to a party once, got real drunk and told his roomates about his imaginary supermodel girlfriends, Jelly (his name was Spanky). Something happened to him in high school and it just snowballed.

If life wasn't tough for Koreans or other Asians already in America by taking his misery out on "the rich" and "Christian people" he's made lives for Koreans miserable as well.

i feel horrible for the woman who had to call in work from being harrassed while in her car and anyone else who suffers similar ignorance stemming from this.

at one of my jobs, the majority of the workers are asian, some even Korean. Will I treat them differently? NO. I will not treat them any different than before, and I don't think anyone else should either.

and on a side note:
a friend of mine that goes to Tech came home for a couple of days to get an MRI and see family, so I'm so happy she wasn't there for this.

I'm surprised that the bomb threat this morning in the VTech campus has yet to be mentioned.

The VTech president was in the building of which a threat was called on, but the scare was reported to be "unfounded."

We can only hope this isn't another copycat incident, especially on the same school so shortly after the first. Cho [allegedly] pulled bomb threats weeks ago and got away with it. My guess is that he did it to see how security reacted.

Man... Another copycat incident is going to be devestating. You bet your ass security is going to be heavy for a while.

Thought:
1. Annoying that the media has the nerve to grouse because his parents have nothing to say to them at this point.

2. Irritating that gun control,....... people - are trying to use this to ban guns from the American populace.
(When you consider that this just restricts rational people - you see how stupid it is.)

3. No surprise that the dimmer portions of our society has already started profiling and making light of "asian's" in America. Geez - when are we as a country going to grow up?

4. Interesting that A number of colleges across the country have gotten bomb threats and have shut down for the week for the retooling of their campus security.

5. Mild Curiousity as to what EXACTLY pushed him over the edge into a need to buy guns and target those he saw as "rich" or female.

TSK.

His step dad was rich. It's an easy link to make, you replaced my father and conned my mother into bed with your money, etc...

with regards the women, and as a note for the people saying the university did everything they could:

He had already had TWO formal complaints submittd against him by female students on the grounds that he was stalking them :wow:

How this guy wasn't expelled at that point I don't know

Meh.
As a Cynic I believe that bahavior that will get you tossed in jail or put up as a sexual deviate in the outside world is accepted and tolerated in college.

This is why date rape has yet to be stomped out on college campuses and stuff like the Duke incident was so easy to believe that such a thing could happen.

College is full of people doing what they want instead of what they need and MOST of that involves the sexual component.

Too bad too.

Even if he was expelled, that wouldn't have necessarily stopped him from walking back on campus.

thank you Supes...i've been through college already and i have a job in my field. it's obvious this dude's train of thought was "poor me. the world is against me." basically he was a p*$$y. he couldn't muster up the balls to accept help from multiple people. i know many people will say that it takes balls to go into a school and shoot up the place but to me that's not a sign of bravery, it's a sign of cowardice...

...and Supes, i LOVE that quote. i'm gonna have to start using it because i believe in it very much so.

security would have been given his picture and told to approach with caution due to the nature of these infractions.

If security spot him walking in the quad and confront he either leaves or fires on the security giving any other members of the team plenty of warning to contain the situation. 1 life versus 33, think about it.

hmmmn.

I'd start a thread on college date rape if I were still in college.

Oh well.

I think you are thinking now in hindsight.

There's a picture when this all happened of an asian male being put to the ground in cuffs, which obviously wasn't the right man.

Do you think most secruity would be that on the ball?

I also was watching the news and one of the correspondants went to V Tech and he said "there is like 10 different ways to come onto that campus".

Even expelled, if he wanted to, he probably would have just been able to walk back on campus unmolested.

the thing being missed here is the concept that higher learning needs to be as open as it is,...
