shooting at an oregon community college, at least 10 dead

There are already plenty of state and federal laws regarding ammo. Some of the laws include:

- limiting the amount of ammo one can purchase a day
- banning certain types of ammunition
- some states (including Illinois!) require separate permits for purchasing ammo
- if you are not legally allowed to own a firearm for what ever reason (illegal alien, mental disability, felony, commitment to a mental hospital voluntarily or not, etc), you're not allowed to buy ammo (some states like Illinois even say that if you have a misdemeanor, you can't possess/purchase ammo)

What are the laws in Indiana?

Chicago is a murder capital...how exactly are those laws helping?

You could point to cases where guns are bad, or cases where they save lives. Taking guns away period is not the answer. It's taking them away from the type of people that shouldn't get their hands on them. Need more responsibility in the home too.

Really? It's not the answer? Try saying that to the other 1st world countries who have done this and have seen massive drops in homicide. They will laugh in our faces.

That's the million dollar question, isn't it?

Because people can freely cross the border between Illinois and Indiana where gun laws are much more lax. Fireworks are also illegal in Illinois, but you wouldn't know that in Chicago in the weeks leading up to the 4th of July because Chicago residents take a quick 30-45 minute drive across the border to on of the many fireworks shops, buy the fireworks, then drive back home.

Comparing between states is useless, there are demographic factors in play. The comparison should be made between before and after instating gun laws. The real question is would Chicago be worse off without gun laws and the answer is yes. Compared to a decade ago, homicides have gone down.

We are the Jersey to your New York.

Jeb Bush's quote "These things happen" is pretty much the slogan of the pro-gun crowd.

He's just keeps giving everyone reasons not to vote for him. And yet somehow I think there will be people who just blindly accept the status quo as unimprovable.

Besides that, Chicago is known for its gang violence, drug trafficking and corruption. Most shootings happen between gangs that try to gain power over the other ones via the drug black market.

Gun control isn't the only thing you have to do to bring the numbers down, but it can't be done without it.

We border Mexico where drug lords can walk out of jail. Only the lone nuts that shootup schools and malls make the news. There are tens of thousands more gang and criminal related gun deaths every year. Laws would really only stop the lone psychopath...which is fine...but you aren't going to really make a drop in the bucket as far as preventing gun deaths sadly.

And I'm for gun control! But, I'm also a realist...

Oh, I'm not saying there are other factors involved in the murder rate in Chicago, I was just saying where the guns are coming from.

To be fair to Jeb Bush, at least he didn't do that awkward laugh like Carson.

It sounds like Chicago doesn't need gun control so much as it needs gang control.

That's always been the irony to me. The cities with the strictest gun laws have the worst crime. The places where I want to have a gun, I can't have one.

It's mostly the big cities with very dense populations and there's always an area that is extremely poor with very little opportunity for employment, the best "job opportunity" is a drug dealer/gang member. Also, living in Chicago is fine for many, law abiding people, they know the bad areas and stay away from those areas. Lived and/or worked in Chicago most of my life and have felt perfectly safe for the grand majority of my life.

It's because the strict gun laws are only in certain areas of the country. It's still easy to get a gun by just going somewhere else. The only way for change is to follow the route of every other civilized nation on earth and create major gun restrictions nationwide.

But we'll never do that. And children will keep dying. Because we only want change as long as we don't have to do anything about it.

The media coverage is some cases has been very poor.

CNN altered a photo of Chris Harper-Mercer, the Oregon shooter, to make him look white.

http://www.infowars.com/cnn-turns-mixed-race-oregon-shooter-into-a-white-man/

When Bryce Williams ( who was gay and had pictures of the rainbow flag ) shot people, no one said blame the flag.

Point being the media prefers a narrative that only white angry racists are the problems with guns. A very unfair and untrue narrative.

Infowars is a biased and heavily conservative site whose claims are probably misleading or outright lies. Wouldn't be the first or second or third time they've been caught manipulating the truth.

Oh right, Infowars, the site from the guy who says juice boxes are making people gay. Trustworthy and reliable. :o

Though...I did drink a lot of juice boxes when I was younger... :o

I never agree with Taarna on anything, but this is the same media that called George Zimmerman a "white Hispanic", and only ever showed a picture of Trayvon Martin as a ten year old. So, it would not surprise me terribly if that were true.

Well the original photo is pretty dark, so it wouldn't surprise me if someone did a shoddy edit to make the features more recognisable. I've seen some terrible editing on photos from the media for visibility purposes alone (and not only for photos of people, but landscapes and even objects).
