I just have to say, the only issue here for me is whether underage girls are being impregnated. Besides it being deemed damaging for girls under 18 or 17 to make the choice to have kids, it also locks a girl into the community, greatly limiting her abilityto choose to leave when she becomes an adult. If a 20 year old woman wants to become a member of a harem, it's her choice, bu the 20 year old with a 5 year old child is sort of stuck, since she has to consider the child.
On the other hand, our gov't has a hard time condemning these FLDS people for underage pregnancies, when underage pregnancy in poor communities is rampant, and those children are born into far less favorable conditions than the kids in this compound (where they are fed and clothed and loved). Nevertheless, I think the state gov'ts (I was correct above - it isn't the Feds) should make it clear to these communes that they are free to follow their religious mandates, but they must not condone or promote underage pregnancies or face raids.
