It should've been PG-13, but PG-13 didn't exist when Jaws was made.

Or, at least, I think that's how the story goes.

Yeah the R rating wasn't established around the time. If the same movie were released to today it would likely be PG-13.

Any appearance of blood usually will mean an R rating. No blood = PG13.

I think in movies like this the term 'fantasy horror' makes a difference.

Jurassic Park is a good example ... ripped limbs, horrific moments ... but because its cgi Dinosaurs doing the killing the rating is kept low.

Same with Jaws .... I've seen very young children watch it with no problem, I myself was allowed to watch it when I was about 7/8 years old.

Quint's final scene would have gotten it an R, easy.

I hate today, I wish 4 year olds could get to watch Se7en.

If you watch Jurasic Park, there are no ripped limbs. The nasty stuff is always implied but never actually shown.

They could pull it off with a PG-13...a hard one, but PG-13 nonetheless.

Temple of Doom in 1984 helped create a PG-13 rating.

ummm no,temple of doom and gremlins was the fore runner films in the creation of the pg-13 rating and trhere is plenty of blood and violence in them

No, not at all. PG-13 didn't exist back then and in the 70s and 80s, PG actually meant that parents are strongly cautioned to make sure it's appropriate for their children.

Now, PG means it's for kids.

What cert was 'Lake Placid'? - That'd me a good reference to go by considering the similiarities between the two films.
