I was listening to a replay of Art Bell last night, and a former Navy or Marine general suggested the United States pull out of the Middle East entirely. Stop supporting Israel, stop interfering with their affairs. Have strictly diplomatic trade relations with some of them, but nothing beyond that. He claimed this is the only REAL way to stop Middle Eastern terrorism and stabilize the Middle East.

What are your thoughts?

I've always been brought up to know that ignoring a problem only allows it to come back later and bite you.

wow. i guess we're the only two on here that listen to Coast to coast. anyway, no we shouldnt, and if we even set a deadline, the terrorists are gonna lay low until we're gone and then its gonna shoot, shoot, bang, bang as soon we're gone.

I highly doubt that.

Why? Terrorists don't attack because they "hate freedom" or want our women to cover their skin. They attack us because of our involvement with Israel.

Hmmm, a pedophile/incest/sexual abuse joke. I didnt expect that :o

Well I was meaning from your mother, but there's no sense in delving too deeply into a joke that wasn't even meant, really. :spidey:

It wasn't that at all. He was saying if your dad pulled out faster you would not have been born and we would have been lucky.

Do you really think pulling out of the Middle East is going to stop terrorism? It may simply embolden muslim radicals. After all that's exactly what Bin Laden wanted.

Having said that I'm not really sure why we have military bases in the middle east.

I thought about this sometimes too. But I wonder how long would we police ourselves before the UN and other nations wonder why we just sit back and not do anything.

why should you?

obviously, the US has way much more important things to worry about on the domestical front than to secure a few people's interests in foreign oil

Which would send us back to the early 1900s with isolationism, America standing by and doing nothing while the world deteriorates and then millions die in another world war. Excellent idea.

so?
give them what they want, they want to be left alone and not have anyone interfere with them, leave them be

but we all know what's the main interest there, right?

so, if it isn't the whole way through, it's a certain doom?

Hey I'd be fine with the US worrying only about domestic issues. But aside from the issues of oil, what if pulling out doesn't bring peace to the middle east? What if there's mass genocide and outright war between the countries? Do we let them swallow each other whole?

When I first read the title I thought it said Middle Earth. And I was like "heck no we have to destroy the ring!!" But as for the Middle East, I'll leave that to the people with the brains. (hopefully there are a few of them in DC)

I'm just saying that it helps to remember the past.

If they want to destroy themselves, I say let them.

I see nothing wrong with this.

I don't see how pulling out of the Middle East entirely is going to end terrorism. As long as there's religious fundamentalism over there there's going to be terrorism.

I'm glad that General Casey has proposed some sort of withdrawal of our troops in Iraq, though. It's about time U.S. Government got in tune with what its citizens want.
