Should there be a bit more comedy in Batstories?

I just finished reading the awesome Tales of the Batman by Tim Sale collection and I think on a par with Blades my favourite story was Madmen across the Sea. Totally in character yet very hilarious in an attempt to cure some of his patients now that they are staying at Blackgate (takes place during Knightfall) Dr Arkham tries to get them to socialise through a game of Softball with the cons. Hilarity ensue with a very ironic ending.

My point is, this comic was really a breath of fresh air to me after reading dark, dark and UBER-DARK (in anything by Azzerello's case) Batman stories. Another instance was the recent Dini Mad Hatter story which has some great comedy timings, as well as the absolutely fantastic Arkham Asylum: Living Hell which had me both in stiches and on the edge of my seat with its black comedy and horrific circumstances.

So what do you guys think? Is a bit more fun and wit in the Dark Knight a good or bad thing? I'm not talking Adam West stuff much as I love him, but I really think some of the finest stories can be made through a fun or comedic perspective.

Every dark character needs some type of humor. Black comedy at the least. #1 reason why Garth Ennis' Punisher is so awesome.

but what works for the punisher doesn't necessarily work for batman. in my opinion: no, there is no need for more omedy than there already is. paul dini's batman ist basically the comedic far-cry of grant morrisons über strange dark stories. and it works perfactly and so well, that i don't really need more of it. in fact, i would really love to see more really serious, dark und god-forsaken depressing batman stories. azzarello's joker was a wonderful attempt and i love it. but that doesn't mean that there's enough for me. you don't need to put this depressing stuff into the regular batman comics, but why not make more for the graphic novel sector?

Very true, but I didn't mean that every book needs to have Batman accidentally dropping a guy off a skyscraper.

I actually think the amount of humor we see from Batman is appropriate. Every once in a while, he'll say something with humor behind it, but not often.

Ennis' Punisher is filled with black humor, but I think it works much better for the Punisher than Batman. I think the Punisher enjoys what he does much more than Batman, so the Punisher would have more reason and more inspiration to be humorous, usually in his narrative. I'm not much of a fan of his blatant humor (almost all of The Russian character and dialogue being the best example), but I've felt the Max writing has been much better in that regard.
