SIDEKICK: The Movie...

Oh, man, I want to see this. I hope it comes to DVD or finds its way to BitTorrent.

Also, congrats on the sale! I hope to see that too.

Beyond great news...

SIDEKICK is coming to DVD!

In Canada that is. I'm just finalizing a deal that should see the movie hit shelves (and online - which means you can order it) sometime mid-November. It'll be in widescreen with a Dolby 5.1 mix, deleted scenes, commentary and everything. Holy crap, huh? Never would have thought I'd see this happen in my wildest dreams. I'm so psyched people dig this movie.

SUPER BIG NEWS!

After over 2 years of updates, my kickass
original superhero movie has found a distributor!

Maple Pictures (the distribs of Crank, Saw, Crash) has acquired Canadian home video, television and new media rights to SIDEKICK! On November 14th SIDEKICK will be in stores across the nation including Blockbuster, Rogers, Movie Gallery, HMV and more.

And best of all, Maple Pictures truly believes in our movie. They're impressed with the great reviews (100% on Rotten Tomatoes!), awesome word-of-mouth and the staggering amount of media attention the film has generated. I'm hoping to reward their faith in our film by making SIDEKICK one of their better/best sellers.

Amazon.ca currently has SIDEKICK available for presale at 30% off the suggested retail price so feel free to buy a copy for yourself (and/or all your family and friends) today! Here's the link:

And just to make sure you feel SIDEKICK is a movie worthy of being included in your collection, I've compiled over 45 minutes of extras, including: filmmaker commentary, bloopers, deleted scenes, cast and crew interviews and much, much more. Oh, and the movie is also available in 5.1 Dolby Digital to boot! And yes, Amazon.ca does deliver to the US (and beyond).

And good news for all you Sydney, Australia-based Superhero Hype peeps, too. SIDEKICK will be screening in Sydney in early December! And I'll be there to present it, too! More info coming soon.

Honestly, I still can't believe how far things have come since my first post here in May 2004 when SIDEKICK was still in production. What a dream come true.

Check out www.sidekickmovie.com for more info.

YAY!!!!

I didn't realize you were actually in Sydney, Ultimate Movie-Man, that's awesome. I'll make sure I get the screening info posted ASAP. And I look forward to meeting you at the screening. I think you'll really dig the movie. I've seen it with over 30 audiences all across North American and it's always really well received. My screening in Sydney will be my first international audience. I'm a bit nervous, but I'm hoping for the best.

Hopefully I can make it, I live south of Sydney and it takes about two hours to get there...I'll try and come. It looks fantastic. If I don't make it, whenever it is, will you be releasing it on DVD internationally?

SIDEKICK is now in stores!
Holy moly does it ever feel weird to go into a video store and see my movie on the shelf. And not just one copy either - I've been in Blockbusters where Sidekick has its own friggin' shelf. So nuts.

Here's a quote from today's glowing Globe & Mail review...

"It also helps that every element of the film -- acting, direction, photography and particularly Matt Judge's musical score -- sustains a mood of giddy apprehension."

As for Sidekick's international premiere in Sydney, I finally have the details...

"Sidekick" Screening:
Saturday, December 2nd at 8:45 p.m.
Chauvel Cinema
(Corner of Oxford St & Oatley Rd in Paddington)
Chauvel Cinema infoline: 02 9361 5398

Perhaps I'll see you there, Ultimate Movie Man. Still, if you could spread the Sydney word, I'd sure appreciate it.

The title of this thread reminded me of the only good film Chuck Norris has done.
I miss Jonathan Brandis...*cries*

Man, there's no way to escape the whole SIDEKICKS vs. SIDEKICK title thing. Ah, what can you do? The title was way too perfect to pass up.

If there's any fellow Canadians out there, be sure to check out Hypaspace on the Space channel this week. They're profiling the release.

Just watched it today. Thought it was pretty good (especially for a low-budget flick). Of course, being low-budget there were some issues (I think some of the lighting of the scenes could have been a bit better) but overall a real solid flick.
SPOILER!
I really liked the downbeat ending. Not knowing what would happen to all of the characters. I love open endings and this story just seemed to really use that well

I can't wait to see what kind of route Focus Features goes with this story.

Good luck to you in your career and I really hope to see more from you soon.

So cool that you got a chance to see the film. And I'm especially delighted you enjoyed it.

Maintaining a darker, more adult tone was very important to me so for you to comment on that specifically truly rocks. I felt there was really no use in me attempting to make another G or PG rated superhero movie when that's what Hollywood is doing with waaaaaay more $. I wanted Sidekick to be the anti-Fantastic Four in a way.

I see you're in Philly - awesome city, btw. Just wondering how you found Sidekick. Was it at a local video store?

Oh, and Focus Features won't be doing a remake as the rights have now reverted back to me. But there's now talk of a bigger budget sequel in the future. Keep your fingers crossed.

SIDEKICK is on TV!!!!

That's right, as of yesterday (Dec 29th), Sidekick is now available on Pay Per View (PPV) and Video on Demand (VOD) through both Rogers and Cogeco Digital Cable here in Canada. So now you can order Sidekick and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. How friggin' crazy is that?!

I know one day I'll get used to it, but I can't tell you how cool it was to dial in channel 100 on my Rogers' digital box and watch my trailer and film last night. I can't wait for the 1st TV Guide with Sidekick in it!

Hey, if you're looking for a nice Boxing Week/New Year's gift for yourself, why not pick up a copy of Sidekick for yourself? It's still available in stores or online at Amazon.ca!

My uncle lives in Toronto and we visit him every other year around the holiday season, since we don't get to see him much. I managed to pick it up at a local store and then watched it on my laptop during the plane ride back. But now I have my very own copy I can watch whenever I want (on a region-free player at least).

Canada's not region one? Well, there goes my idea of buying it online.

EDIT: Wait...I just looked it up. Canada and the US are in the same DVD region, so you shouldn't need a region free player.

So what's your involvement with this picture. Promotions or were you a producer writer or what?

Interesting. Cause it plays on my DVD player at home that's region free, but it won't play on an older RCA Region One DVD player we have in our basement.

That's odd, Canada and the US have always shared the same Region (Region One) so it should work just fine on either machine. I buy movies in the US all the time and I've never experienced any problems.

And to answer Von Doom's question, I'm the writer-producer of the movie. I financed the film myself on lines of credit while working as a waiter here in Toronto. Film Festivals led to good word-of-mouth which led to good press which led to good reviews (still 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!) which led to a distributor picking it up and getting it out here in Canada.

And last week I signed with a decent-sized US based Sales Agent so hopefully I'll have some news to report on some international releases (US included) sometime in the near-ish future!

In the meantime, please feel free to order Sidekick from Amazon.ca. It ships really quickly to the US I'm told!
