I'm going to my first comic con tomorrow (Fallcon in St. Paul). I want to get sketches from some great artists like Adam Hughes and I'm trying to think of a cool theme for my sketchbook. I've seen other themed sketchbooks online like www.thecliffguy.com and I'd love the idea of having lots of variations on a theme.

Any ideas for what might make a cool theme? Thanks.

FALLCON!!!! to bad I'm not gonna be able to go....:csad: oh well FALLCON anyway!!!

I always ask them to draw whoever they want, it could be artists choice. Or have them draw characters they don't normally draw, see what their take on that character is.
Like ask Bruce Timm to draw the Tick or something like that.

The next Con I'm going to, I'm going to have every one sketch Green Arrow. Like many people already know or could figure out by my avatar, I'm a huge Green Arrow fan and I've always imagined how other people draw him. I really like George Perez's Green Arrow allthough he's rarely drawn him. But yeah, pick a favorite character for everyone to draw.

I'd say pair up the aritsts you plan on getting sketches from. For instance, have a Adam Hughes Wonder Woman standing next to a Terry Dodson Donna Troy.

Or maybe a George Perez Nightwing with a Mike McKone Deathstroke squaring off.

You could probably get some cool art. Have the first artist set up the scene with the pose of the first character, and have the second artist elaborate on that by throwing in the opponent.

Or maybe if you have a favorite version of the Justice League you could assign each member to a different artist. Have it like one big group shot and see how the artists interact with one another. Like a Ed Mcguiness Superman standing back to back with a Jim Lee Batman, with a Ed Benes Black Canary kneeling in the foreground next to a Carlos Pacheo Green Arrow while a Rags Morales Elongated Man wraps around them.

I dunno about you, but I'd love to see a pic something like that.

That's a really cool idea!

I'm always up for the "Lesbian Orgy" theme myself. Or just get tons of Powergirl scetches, but that's just me :D

That does sound cool, but how do you ask the artist that?
Do you tell them your plan?
And what sort of sketchbook or paper do you use?

Whatever suits you.

Probably something big so you can frame it and put it on your wall.

I bet you'll get some great stuff. The artists will probably try and top what the one before them did.

Don't forget to scan it.

Well, I ended up going with artist's choice (mostly). I got a some pretty cool stuff from a bunch of indy creators and one awesome old-school Hulk from Rich Buckler. Unfortunately, Adam Hughes was only sketching for the people who actually put on the con. Apparently these decent folk haven't been able to get anything from him in years past 'cause they're busy running the show. I can respect that -- but it also sucks for me. I'll get an AH! some other time though, I guess. I underestimated just how much these can cost. Seems like artists rates ranged from free to just-empty-your-wallet.

yeah, it can get expensive. I spent about or over 50 dollars at the last one I went to just getting a few sketches.

I really like the whole group idea of having artists draw a different member of the group, the only problem with that I haven't figured out yet is how would you plan that out?
Get the first artists to draw the characters in the front kneeling or something?
How would you plan it?

I get them tor draw the character they're mostly known for.

Have the first artist start with the first character in any pose he wants. Then have the next artist build off of that with another character and so on and so on until you get some sort of crazy group shot.

Or feel free to request poses or just let them pick who they want to draw. Like the first artist could draw Batman glaring at somebody. Then the next artist could decide that Batman is glaring at Guy Gardner who is busy hitting on someone. The third artist could decide that Guy is hitting on Powergirl who is trying to ignore him while she armwrestles someone who the fourth artist may decide is Wonder Woman who may have someone tied up in her lasso. The fifth artist could say that it's Mr.Miracle all tied trying to escape while artist six has Big Barda trying to get some truth out of her husband.

I bet the artists will get a kick out of it, especially the first one after he sees how his work was elaborated by the others.

Give it a shot, I'm waiting for the results.
