Yeah, its pretty ridiculous. By law you're supposed to ID everyone regardless of how old they look, but it really depends on how brave or experienced the waiter or waitress is.
IDK if they do it where you live (probably not), but over here in my state, North Carolina, police officers can get minors under 21 off the street to go into a restaurant or bar and try to order a beer or just some kind of alcoholic beverage. If the bartender or waitress doesn't ID the kid and sells the teen alcohol the cop can come in and ticket the waitress and the establishment. Through some really crooked BS its not considered entrapment. My sis was fired from her first bar job because a cop pulled that ****.
That is disgraceful, if they want to be so stringent they should set up a card reader in the shop/bar/restaurant that people have to swipe their card through before ordering alcohol. The current method makes it very awkward for the people serving.
