Smallville Score/Soundtrack?

Alright I went ahead and purchased a Blue Ray player to stick into my machine. Should be here by next week. I have a bit of experience with ripping scores from PC games and blending them with programs such as Goldwave and then even adding my own stuff on top of it. So I'd like to give this a whirl too.

Now, I don't know much about Blue Ray or 5.1 channels, so you'll have to fill me in on how some of this stuff works. Your instructions were pretty clear, so I'm going to see what I can do based on what is in front of me at the moment.

So, let me get this straight. I can eliminate speech entirely and have JUST the background score so long as the box set is in 5.1?

Also, what do you think of this method? http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/remove-vocals-song-mp3-music-instruments/1301/

Also, could you please be a bit more specific in your instructions as to how to actually go through the process? You listed the programs you used and their purpose in the matter, but the details on how to use them are a bit vague. Could you please list the steps you took in each? I've downloaded all three and bought the box set of Season Seven.

You don't seem to be in this thread very much, so I would like to be able to do this on my own, particularly since this is for a project. Maybe I could even nab a few songs for the other people in here too. Thank you for your help.

EDIT:

I have managed to get to the BeSweet phase. What I need here is the following...

1) How do I split the ac3 file into the different tracks
2) Once split, what do I need to do to be able to edit those tracks
3) How do I export the edited material to a format such as mp3

Thank you

Ok here's the process:
1. Insert the disc
2. Rip the correct episode using DVDFab HD Decrypter
3. Open PgcDemux and locate the largest IFO from the folder you ripped the Episode to.
4. Click Process to extract the AC3 (audio) file.
5. Using BeSweet GUI, you extract five WAV tracks from the AC3 (Front Right, Front Left, Center, Back Left, Back Right and Bass)
You need to click on the browse button, insert the main exe for the program where it asks, in the next slot it will ask for you to browse for the AC3 file. Browse the folder on the left and select the file on the right. Now you'll need to select an output folder. Next you apply this, select AC3 to WAV and click convert or start or whatever. You know have 6 WAVs that you can edit)
6. Open the audio tracks (besides Center because center is the speech track) and isolate the section you want (cut out the audio before and after)
7. If there is a section that talking took place, you can't use FR and FL because speech bleeds through those tracks. Turn up the volume on BL and BR.
8. Make sure audio pieces don't just cut in. Also fade them in and out! So if half of the song has talking, cut the half you can't use out, and leave the part that doesn't bleed through in the audio track. Fade what you have in so it isn't a sudden "WHAM!" of sound.
9. Make sure that FR and BR are set to the right speakers and BL and FL are set to the left. Bass should be set to center.
10. Now export the audio file to whatever the program's default audio format is (Audacity is a free audio editing program that you can use and it converts to WAV)
11. If you end up with a file that isn't MP3, using "ANYVideo Converter", "SUPERC" or "Xilisoft Video Converter" convert the file to an Mp3
12. Right click the file, go to Summary and click advanced to enter the file info
13. Upload the file using MegaUpload or some other file sharing website.
14. SHARE THE LINK WITH US!!!

Thank you.

So is it supposed to export the ac3 file into six completely different files that I edit in a program such as Audacity individually? Or is it supposed to be one file? Right now, it's just exporting it into one file and the most I can get out of Audacity is stereo which is two channels.

EDIT: the part I'm having a hard time with is steps 5-7. The channels listed in BeSweet are Center, Left, Right, Surround Left, and Surround Right. Also LFE, but not sure if that's an important channel. Once I figure that out, how do I adjust the volume on them? Am I still editing the individual waves (in terms of volume) in BeSweet? Or should I be using a different program that will allow me to edit all five of them at the same time?

LFE IS important. It is the bass.
Step 6-9 should be done with an audio editing program such as audacity.

Step six is saying that you need to cut out the audio before and after the song you need. You will not need the center channel.

Ok, here's what you need to understand,
LFE - Bass Sounds
Center - Speech
Left and Right - Music, sound effects and some speech
SL and SR - Music and background effects

Now the tracks that should always be active are LFE, SL and SR. You won't need Center at all. If none of the characters are talking during the song you want, keep Left and Right, if characters are talking, their voices will bleed through these channels, so fade out left and right when someone is about to talk, slowly raise the volume on SL and SR during the voices, and then when the talking finishes, slowly turn SL and SR back down and fade Left and Right back in.

Seriously, I figured this out on my own. I gave you all those steps just follow them.

Alright, I finally have this figured out. To rectify some of the previously given instructions...

1) On my PC, you couldn't "choose" an episode from the DVD. It was all one big file which DVD Decrypter will auto-check for you. Should be around 2 hours and 40 minutes long. This one file will contain all four episodes from the said DVD.

2) The next step I had trouble with was everything involving "BeSweet". If you know how to use this program, great. Otherwise, listen up. I used a program called "AC3 Tools Pro" which is basically the point and click way of extract all six audio channels from the ac3 file and exporting each of them into an individual .wave file that can each be played in Windows Media Player. This link will not only point you where you need to go to get the program, but it will also provide you with step by step instructions on how to extract the channels from the ac3 file.

3) Then you can manually drag and drop each of the usable files into a program like Audacity, but as said before, you'll want to use the two surround files as THESE contain just the music and sound effects. No speech. Doing this will allow you to edit the different channels together and trim them any way you like. Remember, if you are going to delete segments, delete them from all of the channels you plan on using at the same time. Audacity makes this very simple with the click and drag feature. Then you can use Audacity to export it to a single MP3 file.

i would be totally confused with this stuff myself too.

If I can get my hands on a free and decent video-screen capture piece of software, I will do a video tutorial. If you have the right tools, the over all process isn't terrible. The hard part was trying to fill in the gaps and make adjustments where necessary.

From there, I guess the only "annoying" part would be actually editing the wave files in Audacity.

In any case, at least now I know it works, so I'll go from there.

It's something that anyone with a decent-sized hard drive can do.

any of you smell the slight hint of 'The Legend of Zelda' theme in the score? I totally hear it in the final scene of the last epi

Those are great! I messaged the person to find out if they did those, and if they can do more.

Ah, see you went with DVD Decrypter originally which threw everything off. If you used DVDFab you would have been set ;)

Also with step 3, you should also compress the front channels when speech does not take place as it is a better quality channel.

By the way, I'll extract those mp3s with credits to finashTV and include it in the public soundtrack. I'll also be making album art for it.

Yeah, but for most of mine, there was speech. But in all honesty, I still think it sounds great with just the two back channels plus the bass. Thank you for at least steering me in the right direction. Prior to this thread, i didn't even realize this was possible.

Since I was able to get what I wanted out of that episode, I'm going to try this with older movies that have recently been released in 5.1 surround sound which didn't include the good stuff in their soundtracks.

Thank you :)

Hi, does anyone have the score for season 6 episode "Hyrdo"? It's the part where Lex and Lana are sitting on their bed and talking about the newspaper article regarding Lex's proposal.

Asteroid-Man, you could rip and remove the voice of this music? Is the instrumental of episode 8x22 Doomsday in the beggining "Previously on Smallville" ?

has anyone been working on any scores? if so post so we can enjoy!

Asteroid-man,

The ending to Descent is so beautiful and thanks for this. Since two years, I've been wanting to have the piano music for the start of Season 7 Episode 3 Fierce when Lana meets Clark in the barn. Can you please upload this for me ? Please :csad:

Thanks
