It's now the question of the burden and toll of what he's doing, the question can this be a finite endeavor. Is this something that has an end? Can he quit and have an ordinary life? The kind of manic intensity someone has to have to maintain the passion and the anger that they felt as a child, takes an effort after awhile, to keep doing that. At some point, you have to exorcise your demons. That's what I love about Batman. There's so much that is about character.

Sounds like Batman Returns to me.

Uhhh...
How?

No.

"Batman Returrns" was about the Penguin and Catwoman (I don't remember if Batman was in the movie or not) but this movie seems to be about Batman.

uh-huh...mmmm ok, yeah, sounds EXACTLY like Returns....

Are you ******ed by the way?

Or Spideyrman 2, or Superman 2. I always liked this progression of a hero in the sequel, thought it was a natural step for them. Plus, although I love Returns (my best Batman movie after Begins), both aforementioned movies were deeper. Judging from Begins, I think TDK will be, as well.

Mmm Hmm, and they're gonna have catwoman and penguin, and penguin is going to throw up motor oil!

First off I think he is talking about Batman in general, the type of tortured soul he is and why he does what he does. Second of all, it really doesn't remind me of Batman Returns at all...

Oh boy.

Don´t understand why some people actually believe TDK is like a remake of Batman Returns :whatever:

Are you serious dude, at what point does Bruce decide he doesn't want to be Batman in returns?

I thought that was in Forever.

You guys SERIOUSLY need to re-watch Batman Returns. The movie was about Bruce Wayne questioning whether or not he wanted to continue as Batman. Remember the ending to the movie where tells Selina that they should give up their ways and live together in a normal life?!

Alternatively, I seem to remember an interview where they said they were doing the opposite with this movie. He doesn't decide he doesnt want to be Batman like in every comic film, he decides he doesnt want to be Bruce Wayne and "gets lost inside this monster".

Where the HELL did you get Batman Returns from that? He's talking about Batman in general.

Actually this was touched more in Forever. Even the title of that movie had to do with his decision. Returns barely scratched the surface of this issue.

good grief. it was never a plotline. :whatever:

No, no, no! In Returns he doesn't know WHAT TO DO. He wants to continue as a crimefighter and defeat villains like Penguin. BUT at the same time he wants to live a normal life with Selina.

In Forever he finally does quit but then realizes that he's both Bruce Wayne AND Batman.

I just watched Returns and Forever a couple days ago. Batman questioning his role is in Forever.

In Returns, the visuals, tell the story. Remember Max Shrek's costume party? Who are the only two characters who don't show up in costume? Bruce and Selina. ALTHOUGH we know that in reality they are in costume. Yet, when they are together what do they say to each other? "I am tired of wearing masks."

Yes, but this issue is never REALLY touched upon in Returns. He says one line in dinner with Selina just before they make out, another at the party, and one final one in the end, when he reveals himself to her. I'd barely say it qualifies for you to say that TDK is a theme-remake of Returns.

Forever is about him quiting then realizing that he is both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Returns is where he does the questioning. He's doesn't know whether to live a normal life with Selina or continue as Batman. At the end of the day Selina chooses for him since she knows that they can't have a normal life.

The visuals do more storytelling than the script.

TDK is a theme-remake of Returns.

I never meant to say it was a remake. At the end of the day both movies are based ON THE COMICS. I'm just saying its similar to Returns just how that film is similar to Superman II and Spider-Man 2.

I really think that they're going to approach it differently than either Forever or Returns did. I've watched both movies in the past two weeks and I think that while these ideas are themes, we can expect Bruce to be less selfish about it, more conflicted. Not really giving up so much as deciding whether to give in.

I seem to remember that early on TDK was described as "things getting worse before they get better", I'm wondering if maybe that was an allusion to a level of stress and sacrifice that pushes Bruce/Batman to question his endurance.

You do have valid points Catman, but as I explained earlier, I never got that impression from Returns, even visually. I always thought Burton's movies were more story than character-driven, so if I ever caught a theme in Returns, it would be the theme of fitting in (for the Penguin mostly) and a critique to society.
So, I'll have to disagree. Like you just said, similar to Spidey2 and Supes2, yes.

I really don't think so, We see Bruce put on the batsuit in Begins and he did that in Batman 89 so BB was remake of 89?
