What are odds you think CM will outgross BP for the title of Highest Grossing solo superhero?

Not a snowball's chance in Vegas. I'm hoping CM does well but I get the feeling that the drop this weekend maybe huge......but here's hoping I'm wrong.

I don't think Captain Marvel will be a phenomenon. It doesn't have anything special about it. BP was the first big budget all-black movie of that kind. Wonder Woman was the first big female superhero movie in a while and an icon.

CM is just another female superhero movie. It's not the first of anything so isn't blazing a trail. Even WW84 can't be in quite the same position as WW. And CM isn't a cultural icon like WW.

I don't see CM bringing out all these people who would not normally even go to see this kind of film like BP did. And CM doesn't have the same four quadrant appeal as WW.

If it does well, it's because it's part of the Marvel machine.

It won't do it domestically. It's well-received and I think will have decent legs, but Black Panther had legs with less competition. It also had a stronger opening. I'm thinking 400 to 450 Million domestic.

None whatsoever. Keep in mind, not even Infinity War outgrossed Black Panther domestically.

Captain Marvel is doing great, but there's very little chance it will outgross Black Panther.

The average for MCU is to make 37% of their domestic gross in the first weekend. BP and GotG 1 had the best legs making less than 30% opening weekend. Avengers 1, Antman, and Spiderman had the next best legs at just over 30%. Most of the MCU movies in the 80% RT score range made about 40-43% of their overall gross weekend 1. If CM makes the average, it will finish fifth or sixth behind Civil War (which made the most of any weekend 1 at 44%, interestingly enough). If has worse legs than CW, it will be in a big bunch in the middle of the pack between 300k and 350k.

All that to say not a chance it out draws BP and will probably end somewhere between 7-10 among the MCU domestically.

Were it not for the few weeks of no competition, I'd be skeptical it will have any legs.

BP had a run of full 2 months before it got any serious competition from IW. CM has Shazam in 3 weeks, plus Dumbo and Us coming up before then. Those films will snatch up screens and filmfans for sure.

I think getting to $1 billion is basically what everyone is hoping for now.

I seriously doubt it. Black Panther had less competition and was an overall better movie. It will do well, but not that well.

I can't see it. Black Panther is a movie that successfully used a large cast of characters to articulate the internal debate within T'Challa over what kind of a king he should be. Captain Marvel. . . was nowhere near as finely crafted.

I found Carol much more interesting than T'Challa. I liked the action in Captain Marvel more and I was never bored. The 2+ hour run time for Cap Marvel flew by whereas the 2 and a half hour run time to Black Panther felt like 3+ hours.

We just prefer Captain Marvel. It's not like I think Black Panther is bad, it's not, but it wasn't a home run in my opinion

Well, here's my thing. I find T'Challa a more interesting character than Carol - but her world was much more interesting due to the multiple civilizations it encompasses. That kinda sealed the deal for me. We got a taste of BP's world, but really it was only half a movie - I felt they did Killmonger way too early. He's more of a 2nd or 3rd film villain.

As one reviewer stated "Black Panther is a slow burn" and that imo is why I find BP to be one of the best marvel films in a while. The movie actually takes to time to devolve it's characters. Yes, the action does tend to a back seat, but the world building and the drama make up for it. My problem with CM is it feels like it's just playing it safe, sticking to the old formula without adding anything new or stepping outside the box. Which is a shame because it's Marvel first female lead superhero film but personally the whole plot was a bit of a let down for me.

While I think CM has all the right ingredients, it just lacks the punch and feels like it's another middle of the road MCU film rather than taking creative risks and try to take the superhero genre to another level.

I guess what I mean is. Besides the obvious female power message, it just doesn't stand out as well as other superhero films and to me that's a shame.

Lastly, the villain was a total let down in CM for me as well. After coming of a great high with awesome villains like Killmonger,Vulture, Hela, and Thanos, the main baddie was just meh.

the old saying goes "You only get one chance to make a first impression" so might as well treat each film like it's your last and bring the A game.

Completely agree with this statement. I liked CM, but they didn't take the time to fully develop Carol and it feels like a standard, Phase 1 origin film. All the pieces are there but they sacrificed development for the sake of the plot, which is a cardinal sin in my book. I'll forgive a weak plot all day long as long as the characters are strong (see TLJ) but weak characters are hard to accept and end up compounding any problems the story has.

I was engaged throughout the entirety of Captain Marvel and the runtime flew by whereas when I went to see Black Panther a second time it just dragged. The supporting cast is the best part of Black Panther; Shuri, Nakia, Okoye, M'Baku. They all stood out more than T'Challa himself.

As for Kilmonger, I still don't get the hype. He was fine, but he's not one of my favorite MCU villains.

Welp some people don't get the hype for Thanos, Some for Hela and so forth and so on. We all have our favorites and it's good we have a huge selection of baddies to choose from.

Well it's cool you enjoyed CM very much. Would suck to pay for a movie and not have a good time. Just as you found BP to meh, I found CM to be the same. But atleast out of the two we both have our favorites.

I wouldn't say Black Panther was "meh" I still really enjoy parts of it. I just don't think it's a top 10 MCU movie

I could see the sequel making more BP's sequel. Both billion +.
