Resident Evil 5 accused of racism

Did anyone not see this coming? African womens' blog Black Looks has accused Resident Evil 5 of racism, calling into question the game's setting and depiction of black people as "inhuman savages".

"The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people," the website reads, referencing the (bloody excellent) extended trailer released last week.

"The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man's job is to destroy them and save humanity," the post continues.

"This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."

Sounds like they're being just a bit overly PC to us. We could mention that there's already been four games' worth of white zombie-shooting, but we've got a feeling it's a wasted argument...

We've been in touch with Capcom to see what its response to the claims is, and we'll let you know what it has to say shortly.

I must admit that the race row infuriates me. Here in Englan it is shoved in our faces every day -- no blackboards in classrooms, check; no gollywogs on jam jars, check; there has even been mention in years gone about changing the ball colours in snooker and pool because the white ball hits the black ball WTF.

I'm straight, white, and healthy; the biggest 'minority' out there. However, if I was black, red, yellow, or even transparent, I would be deeply offended by how the stupid things can be turned into race rows.
