So I have a friend who wants to join the Air Force...

hunt0r, That's what I mean by the Air Force is not getting any easier. They've extended our basic training and we are becoming more and more mobile by the year. We are getting smaller and more Army-like...I dread the day we are absorbed back into the Army.

Jack Rabbit, tell your friend to ask about the Coast Guard or something if he doesn't want to be in the desert...I haven't seen those guys out there yet.

My father was a pilot and I don't remember it being posh at all. If that was considered posh what do the other branches do? Dig foxholes and tough it out like real men? I don't see what would be wrong with working in a nice place. I guess i'm not marine material:oldrazz:

You're not.

But it's simple, the Air Force doesn't train like Marines and they don't operate like Marines.

And Air Force Bases are often ALOT nicer than any Marine Corps base or Army base. That's what I meant by posh.

Actually, some of the USCG has been deployed to Iraq to train the Iraqi police and security forces effective harbor patrol.

Hahaha Marines dog on the Army

Army dogs on the Air Force

Air Force dogs on the Coast Guard...now that I think about it I didnt see any Coast Guard when I was in Iraq...hell I even saw some Navy guys there! :yay:

The Air Force DOES take care of its people really nice when it comes to facilities and amenities. I'd take an Air Force base any day over an Army post or a Marine base. Though Navy bases aren't so bad...but still not as good as Air Force bases.

Air Force personnel are trained to do their job. If I am an Aircraft Loadmaster then I am trained to make sure aircraft are loaded and balanced so the plane does not crash. Marines are trained to be Marines THEN to do their job. I know its not that simple but for a one sentence description am I correct?

Reason for this is that when the AF gets their funds they usually put a lot into quality of life type things. But these past couple of years with this war and what not, the AF has had lots of their money pulled away and given to the Army and Marines for funding the war. Which is understandable. I would rather the money go towards uparmoring some vehicles in the desert then to build me a new base library or something.

Lol...I guess I'm wrong then. Tell your friend to enlist in the Postal Service. :woot::up:

Correct. 'Every Marine a rifleman'.

We're riflemen before all else.

Every Marine Corps officer is trained to lead a basic infantry platoon.

In boot camp we're brainwashed, in so many words, into a warrior culture.

As a Combat Correspondent, I'm trained to report and document the stories relevant to my fellow Marines. But I'm expected to have the ability to drop everything I'm doing and act as a basic rifleman.

So much of our training is combat oriented it's not even funny.

The safest place for any enlisted man is in the navy. They put you in a big aircraft carrier and you'll never see a single terrorist.

Not entirely true. I saw quite a few Navy people when I was eating at the chow tent at my deployed base.

Your expert opinion is wrong.

The Marine Corps doesn't have medics. We have NAVY Corpsmen. They are expected, and they DO everything Marines do. PLus you've got the NAVY Seals, and the Seebees.

What is the big deal with being "posh" in the air force as you say it. i'd be completely fine piloting expensive aircraft and not having to get foot fungus from sweating excessively in the desert and not having clean socks. I guess if that is macho and tough then that's cool for you. If a guy wants to do things another way he should be able to without your criticism. I plan on going into the air force and some guy made a crack that a female marine could kick my ass. I said that was cool if i want to join the marines then i would have.

Reviewing this, I think you have a profound misunderstanding of the United States military. Unless you plan on attaining a commision and becoming an officer, you won't be piloting 'expensive aircraft'.

And I hate to break it to you, but it's not like the Air Force is the only branch with aircraft...the Army's got their Black Hawks and Apaches, The Navy's got their Tomcats and what not, and the Marine Corps has Harriers and Hueys.

You should probably look into this more...

Whatever. I'm just trying to be realistic with him.

I'm angry because if he's going to enlist, he should be fully commited, and understand and accept the responsibilities, not shy away from it and hope to remain 'safe'.
Really just sounds like you're being an elitist ass**** to me. Just because he isn't doing it your way is no reason to bust his balls about it.

And you aren't much of a friend continuing to point fun at him behind his back.

Thank you for disregarding everything I've said in the entire thread and drawn your own ill-concieved conclusion.

It's not that he's doesn't want to do it 'my way' that made me angry. It's that there's no such thing as 'his way' and he needs to realize that.

Elitist?:whatever: 'The Few. The Proud.':o Comes with the territory, buddy.

Maybe your friend likes life and doesnt have a deathwish and a superiority complex mixed with blind patriotism.
Just remember, at the end of the day, you only fought for a piece of land.

We're not all heros, something we all have to face that at one time or another, however maybe he still wants to help in some capacity so just let him do his part and you do yours.

you also don't have to be in the military to be a hero... there's great pride in being an everyday hero.. giving a helping hand and running our country economically.. soldiers may fight to keep us safe, but without us doing what we do, we have no country worth saving
