Ant-Man and The Wasp So no Ant-Man 2?

Is this a possibility, rumour, or just speculation?

I think the Ant-Man sequel will depend entirely on how Ant-Man is recieved. The last thing Marvel want is to announce Ant-Man 2: The Wasp, to wild applause only to then cancel it should Ant-Man flop (I don't think it will, by the way).

There's never been any mention of a Hawkeye series at all

I suspect there's a setup of Crossfire as an Ant-Man villain.

I also think Taskmaster has strong enough Scott Lang Ant-Man ties to work.

Ant-Man & Wasp will probably be in Cap 3/Avengers 3. That's good enough for me.

I'd be happy if he did just show up in team-up movies after this one, but I'd love for (assuming this is successful) a sequel to be made for Phase 4. I'd love to see what Reed could come up with on his own given his Fantastic Four pitch from a while back. There's some great Ant-Man stories if you dig deep enough.

I was about to ask if people think he'll show up in Cap3? I do think Avengers 3 is likely (or 4 depending on how they split it). I think he'd be a good fit for Cap3, but I'm not sure if it's too soon to put him in.

If Ant Man is a massive success. There will be a sequel. GotG2 wasn't announced until early reviews for the first one were coming in and Marvel decided it was good enough to make a sequel.
Think it will probably be the same for all the solo films.

Yeah and that was within a month of its release not 9 months prior.

Any pending sequel on deck now is listed because it's prequel proved its worth.

Guys, wait until Phase 4. Ant-Man is the bridge between Phases 2 and 3 so it's not surprising that there won't be a sequel before Avengers 3.

You also need to remember that Edgar Wright's script was full of continuity errors so that affected Marvels plans. Plus we aren't getting Iron Man 4 or Hulk 2 in Phase 3.

The reason why we aren't getting Iron Man 4 is because Captain America 3 is going to be Iron Man vs Captain America. Hulk isn't getting a sequel because Universal owns the distribution rights to Hulk solo films until I think 2016 or 2018.

My advice is to keep giving Marvel money during Phase 3 so that Phase 4 happens. Phase 4 will probably include Hulk and Iron Man sequels at the very least. Ant-Man may very well also get a sequel. Plus there's always room for Ghost Rider and Thunderbolts to be introduced. This is my ideal Phase 4.

2019
July - Thunderbolts
October - Ghost Rider

2020
May - Iron Man: Armor Wars
July - Hulk: Return of the Leader
November - Black Widow: Homecoming

2021
May - Guardians of the Galaxy: Conquest
July - Black Panther: Enemy of the State
November - Captain America: Fallen Son

2022
May - Captain Marvel - War of the Marvels
July - Ant-Man 2
October - Doctor Strange - Book of Cthon

2023
May - Mighty Avengers - Atlantis Attacks
July - Inhumans 2
December - West Coast Avengers - Kang Dynasty

And I'd save Moon Knight, Punisher, Elektra and She-Hulk for Netflix and Runaways for ABC Family.

I feel like Darkhawk can be saved for Phase 5.

If Spider-Man ends up in the MCU, his movies should be team up films like the Marvel Team-Up comic book featuring him and one other character who either wouldn't be able to support their own movie or might not get a sequel greenlit, either at all or in the near future. This would distinguish the MCU Spider-Man films from the Sony ones.

To this end, Spider-Man and Ant-Man would be ideal.

They could fight Taskmaster, who should be introduced into the MCU. That would allow Ant-Man to have a quasi-sequel but also allow Spider-Man to get a film as well, killing two birds with one stone.

I really don't see a future for Ant-man as a franchise unless the movie does incredibly well. Not in Phase 4 at least. Phase 4 will need to have sequels to Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spiderman. Possibly Inhumans as well, though that's less likely given Inhumans are now effectively starting P4. In addition to that I expect at least 1 new IP will be developed and at least 1 of the original franchises will continue in some capacity, and possibly more. Things are just too busy for more Ant-man solo films, especially as he doesn't really open up many new avenues for the MCU.

If for some bizarre reason, Ant-Man grosses an insane amount, like well over 800 million, I doubt we'll get a sequel.

It's pretty obvious there will be a sequel, Its MARVEL, Yes they have passion for the character and stories but if they can make money then why not. They have good enough writers to fit him into the universe. And hopefully there can be an Iron Man 4 and Hank Pym can be like Black Widow was in Winter Soldier

Marvel has a lot on their plate right now. They've got to launch their potential replacement Avengers:

Ant-Man
Doctor Strange
Black Panther
Captain Marvel
Spider-Man
etc.

While continuing previously established successes:
Iron Man/Cap
Thor
Guardians

Phase 3 is about testing the waters. For all we know we could only get one film for anyone of these new franchises (Spider-Man aside), it all depends on how they're received. Phase 4 is likely when we'll get a sequels, with the lesser performing heroes becoming supporting roles in more bankable titles.

with all the turbulence that informed the production so far, it's probably best to leave sequel ideas on the shelf. The character can still be used elsewhere.

This. I really don't see them making an Ant-Man sequel.

@ the OP...

And when we approach Dr. Strange without the announcement of a sequel... doomed to fail! :waa:

You seem to have some general grievance against the movies Marvel Studios puts out... which is completely fine, I guess. However, don't throw out shallow, thinly veiled jabs in the guise of even-handed discussion and expect not to get called on it.

Did you really expect Ant-Man 2 to be a part of Phase 3? Even though Ant-Man is now technically part of Phase 2, that would make two Ant-Man films between Avengers films, which would be bonkers considering the slate. Or did you expect them to announce Ant-Man 2 as the lone Phase 4 movie?

(Inhumans doesn't really count since that was pushed past A:IW2 solely due to the Spider-Man deal.)

Well at the end of the film it did say Ant-Man will return but did not give a specific date like GotG did. We know Lang pops up in CW but I have a feeling if Ant-Man breaks out like I have a feeling it will then they may squeeze the sequel into phase 3 somehow

It would be a shame not to get an Ant-Man sequel. There seems a lot of potential for further story, and to only see glimpses of these characters in other Marvel movies would be an injustice to them. When would we spend more time with the likes of Scott, Hank and Hope, or even find out what happened to Janet if not in their own movie?

It really feels like it's only begun. I don't know with the low box office return if they would make a sequel though. I thought it would do better.

Not every Marvel film needs a sequel.
Thank you.

I honestly don't think a modestly budgeted Black Panther film needs a sequel, for example. Nor does a Captain Marvel movie for that matter.

To respond to main topic:

Ant-Man set itself up for the possibility of the sequel and I still think it's premature to rule it out. It was budgeted lower and could either end up having good legs, great overseas BO or both. Plus, you have Scott Lang's character coming up in Civil War which is going to be an event type of film. Ant-Man's stock could potentially go up and there could be increased interest in the character.

The long and short of it is, there could still be an Ant-Man sequel. There's going to be a Wolverine sequel, after all.

I don't see why Captain Marvel or Black Panther movies wouldn't have sequels, especially since people are pushing diversity. Captain Marvel's story sounds amazing, so I'm sure it has great potential for a trilogy.

Phase 3 has been revealed and no Ant-Man 2 until at least 2020

Why do you think this is?

Aside from TIH every MCU franchise has had sequels shortly before release.

Only reason I can think of them not planning a sequel is due to a movie flopping but Ant-Man hasn't released yet so they are either thinking it'll flop and not devoting a slot for a sequel or they're planning on only having one movie for this then putting him on a team.

Perhaps the same is planned for Black Panther and Captain Marvel. One movie then onto a team instead of solos.

What do you guys/gals think?

If Marvel is planning to do team based movies, then they need to do it for all characters. I don't want to see a Thor 5, Captain America 6, or an Iron Man 7. I don't think these new characters should only have one film. Based off of weekend grossing, Ant-Man will probably flop, and lets face it, Marvel needs more female superhero movies. It would be a shame if Captain Marvel only gets one movie, but as the MCU continues to expand, its possible they may focus on more team based movies than solo ventures.

Maybe part of the plot of Ant-Man 2 (if there were a sequel) could revolve around

Scott and Hope going into the micro verse armed with plenty of those growing discs to retrieve Janet.

Would love a sequel to Ant Man, enjoyed the first so much and I loved how inventive the action was and there was an obvious set up at the end with Scott coming back from the micro verse and Hank wondering if he can get to Janet and bring her back.

If it makes close to $400m ww. Then they will keep the option of a sequel open.
