I heard somewhere the budget for the Spider-Man reboot will be 80 million dollars, is that true? I thought it be bigger then that.

So far it seems like its true but hey you never know.

What was the budget for spidey 2?

*edit* so it was 200 mill and the first spidey was 140. Bit of a drastic fall back eh?

Most likely that is a lie. You can expect the budget to be anywhere from 140 million - 200 million+

well remember CGI costs have gone down. And the spider-man character himself wont cost so much in pre production, because he's already been done before. they know what kind of wire rigs to use ahead of time and everything. and you can't see his face. that saves a lot of money right there.

remember how real the prawn looked in District 9? Well that was only 30 million. they pick some unknown actors? that saves tens of millions of dollars right there.

I do think the 80 million number is probably just a rumour, that's all we ever get at this stage is rumours.

If it is 80 million then Sony is shooting itself in the foot. Beside having a budget this miserly sends the signal that Sony doesn't really have confidence in how ppl will accept this 'darker' re-boot. Spider-Man is probably Sony's biggest name franchise of all time, yet they give it a budget that's under 100 million. If anything they should be going all out with this thing, money wise......

I think they're waiting to see how ppl take to the new cast, and whatnot, plus every Marvel based character movie that's been re-booted to date has done either really bad, or just barely broke-even at the b.o i.e Hulk and Punisher.....

i just hope this doesn't turn in to another Dragonball Evolution...how sad that was

Even if it does turn out to be 80 million, they can still do a lot.

Sony's approach seems pretty fool hardy if you ask me, but on paper it probably sounds brilliant to an idiot studio exec:

1) Start over to avoid the hassle of writing new stories
2) Get a director who's easier to boss around
3) Lower the budget

Way to go, sony.

first spidey was 140.

The first movie had an inital budge of $70 million. That's how much FOX spent on the first X-Men. Then, when SONY started to like what they saw they gave Raimi and Visual Effects Supervisor John Dykstra more money to improve the CGI and action scenes. The budget rose to $100 million. Then they spent $30 million on the marketing. So, the budget was $130 million.

The same might happen here. If the studio likes what they see they might be willing to spend a few extra bucks. BUT, like someone said earlier, District 9 changed everything with its $30 million budget.

District 9.

Nuff said.

Something that a lot of people seem to forget is that most of District 9 was filmed in a landfill.

They also seem to forget that the director is incredibly familiar with visual effects as he started working with them at the age of 14.

Neill entire adult career has centered around visual effects. The same doesn't apply to Marc Webb.

Nowhere near the level of Blomkamps familiarity of the form.

Thats why District 9 is such a bad example. Neill was able to orchestrate these talented vfx/sfx companies into making something spectacular.

We have no idea if Webb can do this. So a very ill comparison indeed.

Sony knows that everyone is saying 80 M and they haven't corrected it so... I assume it's true for now. But even if that's the base, it can still go up to 100 M very easily.

District 9.

Nuff said.

a) D9 wasn't set in new york
b) D9 has zero stars (I think the new spidey will have at least a big name villian)
c) D9 didn't have to convincingly capture a superhuman

Kick-Ass has $70 million. Not advocating this whole $80 mil thing, just saying.

The characters in Kick-Ass don't have any powers. Not as much CGI is mandatory.

Okay, it's time for Sony to either admit to this (80M) budget or say it's rumor and that they're committed to a bigger budget. This is already a rumor I'm tired of hearing.

No rumors about it. This info came straight from Hollywood Reporter. This is legit. Sony is low-balling the reboot.

Comparing it to District 9 is off. That film was made in a foreign country (South Africa) with a cast/crew full of nobodies (minus Jackson) and done non-union. The money went into the visual effects. The Spider-Man reboot will most definitely be unioned as studio productions are.

they would have debunked it by now, they haven't been slow to debunk other rumours that weren't true

the low budget will force the director to be creative rather than going 'oh, we'll do it later in post'
