One that I must mention:

Sanctuary, by Miles Davis. A friend of mine once described it as music to listen to on the last night of your life. At that moment, I thought that was too depressing and morbid a judgement, but time has worn away that delusion. I don't care if the song isn't a classic, or the most brilliant thing Davis ever did, but listen to that electric guitar... Without saying much at all, it says everything one ever needs to know about loss, regret, broken promises and paths not taken. It paints a picture of loneliness and disillusionment that rattles in your brain, elusive and non-descript. Perhaps there are songs that would fit the bill better, but I know that when I hear the Grim Reaper knocking, that's what'll be playing through my speakers.
