Sonic Mania users to get new content via free update.

Sega has announced Sonic Mania Plus, a physical release version of Sonic Mania with new features. It will launch this summer.




The packaging will feature a holographic slip cover, reversible Sega Genesis / Mega Drive-branded sleeve, and 32-page Sonic Mania art book. It will cost $29.99.




Sonic Mania Plus will feature two new playable characters (Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel), an all-new “Encore Mode,” and an expanded four-player “Competition Mode.”




Users who already own Sonic Mania will be able to get the new content of Sonic Mania Plus via a free update.
Pre-orders will open on March 19.

Sega has announced Sonic Mania Adventures, a series of five animated shorts done by the team that made the opening animation for Sonic Mania. The first episode will be released for free within the next 30 days.


Sonic Mania Adventures will star Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and not feature any dialogue. Music will be done by Tee Lopes, who handled the music for Sonic Mania. There will be an ongoing story between all five shorts.

Sonic Mania Plus will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on July 17 in the Americas and Europe for $29.99, Sega announced.


The physical edition of Sonic Mania Plus will include a holographic slip cover, reversible Sega Genesis / Mega Drive-branded sleeve, and 32-page Sonic Mania art book.


Sonic Mania Plus introduces two new playable characters from past Sonic games, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, and an “Encore” mode that will “provide a fresh look to familiar zones with new challenges and layouts.” The “Competition” and “Time Attack” modes will also receive an update allowing four player competitions, as well as ghost challenges for time trials.

The official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account is teasing a new game announcement. The news was casually dropped in a tweet mocking the General Data Protection Regulation European privacy law that went into effect today.


The screen on the device Sonic is holding in the tweeted image reads, “We’ve updated our Privacy Policy. As part of our ongoing efforts to prepare for our new game announcement, as well as release Sonic Mania Adventures Part 3 this month…”


It is possible the new game is the formal announcement the new Sonic racing game teased back in March. Stay tuned.

Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog and Sega Ages: Thunder Force IV will launch for Switch via the Nintendo eShop in August for 925 yen each, Sega announced.


Here is an overview of each game’s features, via their official websites:

  • Original Mode: Enjoy the original Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog. Stage selection, which was a cheat code in the original version, can be turned on / off at startup. Additionally, the “Spin Dash” action added in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and “Drop Dash” action aided in Sonic Mania have also been added (which can be disabled in the game options). Also, in addition to the standard Japanese and overseas game versions, you can also choose to play the Mega Play version. Mega Play was a Sega Genesis / Mega Drive formatted for arcades to play popular Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games. The Mega Play version is a time attack game where the goal is to clear familiar stages within the time limit, allowing players to enjoy a condensed form of Sonic the Hedgehog‘s thrill and sense of speed through stages configured to emphasize speed.
  • Ring Keep Mode: A support mode added in 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for 3DS. Since the player will always start the stage with 10 rings, it is easy to come back from boss battles or mistakes made right after the stage begins.
  • Challenge Mode: 1) A worldwide ranking mode where players compete to clear “Green Hill Zone Act 1” with the best time. 2) A worldwide ranking mode where players compete in score attack in the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version. Even just one mistake will end the challenge.

  • STYX Mode: A mode where you can play as the FIRE LEO-03 “STYX,” the fighter spacecraft used by the player in Thunder Force III. While you can play using all of the weapons from Thunder Force III, will the older model spacecraft make the fight harder in Thunder Force IV? STYX Mode is unlocked by clearing Original Mode once.
  • Original Mode: Enjoy the original Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of Thunder Force IV. You can choose between the Japanese and overseas game versions. Also, in addition to being able to increase the difficulty by configuring slowdown reduction, you can also configure whether the background music stops or continues during voice-over playback when powering up like the original version.
  • Kids Mode: A beginner mode with a lower difficulty from the original version that offers handicaps such as the player not losing their weapon upon making a mistake. This is based on the element added to the Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 version of Thunder Force IV for Sega Saturn.

To help promote Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus, Sega released a Sonic Mania Adventures series of web shorts online. These five episodes offered people an opportunity to see Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray interact with one another and deal with Doctor Eggman’s minions. Now, to help people understand how these were made, a behind the scenes video with Tyson Hesse, the shorts’ director, and LiritRosenzweig-Topaz, the executive producer, has been released.

The Sonic Mania Adventures video offers almost five minutes worth of interviews with Hesse and Rosenzweig-Topaz. It goes through the creative process, as well as shows some concept art.

The trailer showcases how Sonic and friends work together using team-based moves to race past rival teams. It also features the first footage of Team Rose and the Ice Mountain stage. Players will be able to assist teammates and knock out opponents with a variety of fast-paced moves, including:

Team Sonic Racing delayed to May 21, 2019

Sega has delayed Team Sonic Racing from its previously announced winter release window to May 21, 2019.

“To make Team Sonic Racing the best game it can be, we’re giving the team extra time to work on it. Our new release date is May 21, 2019,” Sega said in a tweet. “We know delays are no fun, but quality matters most. Thanks for your patience—we’ve got more to show you for Team Sonic Racing very soon!”
